Nick Dunlap became the first amateur in 33 years to win on the PGA Tour, holding on for a one-shot victory over Christiaan Bezuidenhout at The American Express on Sunday. Dunlap, the 20-year-old University of Alabama student and reigning US Amateur champion, is the first amateur winner since Phil Mickelson at the Tucson Open in 1991. Playing in just his fourth tour event, he became only the seventh amateur winner since 1945.

Why did they give the $1.5 million prize to they guy in second place? He did not win. He should have gotten the second prize money. Since Dunlap was ineligible for the prize money, nobody gets it. In a fair world, if you play in the tournament you should be eligible for the prizes. The prize/awards are meaningless unless the actual winner gets to be the real winner.

Good playing, Nick! The purse is what the professionals play for. Whichever pro scored the lowest will get the prize money for first. Nick Dunlap joins Mickelson and Scott Verplank as amateur Tour winners. I would bet that Nick turns pro soon. He's too good not to.

Nick Dunlap joined a short list of amateurs who won on the PGA Tour. He is the most fortunate 20-year-old in the USA. I did not hear Doug Sanders name mentioned yesterday by Golf Channel commentators in features about amateurs who won on tour. Sanders won the Canadian Open as an amateur. He was an underrated golfer and a truly tragic figure.

The prospect of a deal to release the remaining hostages held by Hamas appeared to recede on Sunday after a Hamas official said Benjamin Netanyahu’s rejection of their conditions meant there was “no chance” of their return. Netanyahu had earlier dismissed the militant group’s conditions to end the war, which he said included leaving Hamas in power and Israel’s complete withdrawal from the territory. A Hamas official, Sami Abu Zuhri, told Reuters the Israeli prime minister’s refusal to end the military offensive in Gaza “means there is no chance for the return of the [Israeli] captives."

It was a routine meeting of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee. [SNIP] Chairwoman Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.) was conducting a hearing on U.S. relations with Cuba when Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) interrupted the hearing to speak about her desire for the U.S. to reestablish relations with the island nation. Salazar was having none of it. Lee is not a member of the Committee, and according to long-standing House rules, there would have to be a unanimous vote of Committee members to allow her to speak. “Today, I exercised my authority as Subcommittee Chairwoman to not allow an off-Committee Member to spread communist propaganda during my Cuba hearing."

[SNIP] Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Chris Olivarez posted videos and images on social media Wednesday night showing migrants being handcuffed and hauled off. "Troopers are arresting illegal immigrants for criminal trespass at Shelby Park in Eagle Pass," he said. "Troopers are enforcing criminal trespass on single adult men & women. The State of Texas will maintain a proactive posture in curbing illegal border crossings between the ports of entry."

The bipartisan sponsors of a new bill to target chronic absenteeism want to model a piece of advice from novelist Jean Shepherd: “In God we trust, all others pay cash.” In a proposed two-year pilot program, Republican state Rep. Bill Seitz and Democratic Rep. Dani Isaacsohn, both of Cincinnati, said cash transfers would be sent to kindergarteners and ninth graders. [SNIP] According to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, prior to the pandemic, kindergarteners considered chronically absent – missing 10% or more of a school year for any reason – registered at 11%. In the last school year, the rate ballooned to 29%.

He’s baaack. Former Democratic Cleveland mayor, congressman and longshot presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich filed paperwork at the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday that indicates he’s running as an independent for the congressional seat held by Rocky River Republican Rep. Max Miller. Kucinich has previously run for office as a Democrat. He missed the December deadline to run in the Democratic primary for the seat that encompasses western and southern Cuyahoga County, Medina and Wayne counties, and northern Holmes County, but the filing deadline for independents to seek the seat isn’t until March. Kucinich served as Cleveland’s mayor from 1977 to 1979.

Can Nikki Haley read the room? Apparently not. With the New Hampshire primary just two days away, on Sunday she played the race card in a big way, making outlandish and implausible claims about her youth in South Carolina. Whose votes is she trying to win? Those of patriotic voters who are thoroughly sick of charges of “racism” being used as a weapon or those of the entrenched Washington establishment that weaponized those charges? The answer isn’t even close to being in doubt. Haley came out big for identity politics saying: “We were the only Indian family in our small southern town. I was teased every day for being brown.

All six eligible voters in the precinct — four registered Republicans and two undeclared voters — pulled the lever for Haley, 52, who is desperate for a shock victory in the Granite State to halt what many observers see as former President Donald Trump’s unstoppable march to the GOP nomination.

Nikki Haley relied heavily on the support of Independents and Democrats in the New Hampshire primary yet still lost by wide margins. Of Haley voters in the Granite State, CNN said, “about 7 in 10 said they were registered as undeclared prior to Tuesday.” CNN relied on an exit poll to make its shocking statement. New Hampshire’s loose requirements allow for voters to cross over, while future Republican caucuses and primaries will consist overwhelmingly of registered Republicans. Trump crushed Haley in the New Hampshire primary by double digits with results still outstanding. The Associated Press called the New Hampshire results within three minutes.
