How about the rest of the opening ceremony. It wasn't all that great either. Most of it made no sense. I'm still trying to figure out why Lady Gaga was included in this affair, and what was up with the masked idiot in a cape running across rooves carrying the flame? Was it really necessary to have that woman standing in the rain on top of a building singing, or the bunch of people dressed like jokers doing whatever they were doing on a platform in the middle of the river. Just go back to having the countries walk into a stadium and some celebrity light the flame. Even many of the spectators left because they couldn't see anything. The smart ones left and went to a bar.

They left the Maenads out of their "Bacchanal". Also called Bacchantes, they are described as "the female followers of Dionysus and the most significant members of the thiasus, the god's retinue. Their name, which comes from μαίνομαι (maínomai, “to rave, to be mad; to rage, to be angry”), literally translates as 'raving ones'." (Wikipedia.) Their thing was to get so high on wine and worshipping Dionysus that they ran through the countryside, tearing apart living creatures (including their own relatives) with their bare hands. Seems like that would have been just perfect for the trip down the Seine.

Cycling BMX racing Cycling Mountain biking Surfing. Squash 3x3 Basketball A snore a minute. And how is "Mountain biking" different than BMX racing?......Actually, I don't care, it turns out. Throw in bad food, power outages, arson, cardboard beds, and cancelled events due to a polluted venue, and you have the French Olympics. At the end of the 1994 Olympics, the IOC head deliberately held back on praise for Atlanta's efforts, due to the problems experienced. Can't wait for his comments this year.

After a months-long investigation, the former executive director of a now-defunct San Francisco nonprofit was arrested Tuesday on dozens of felony charges related to the alleged misuse of over $700,000 in public funds, the San Francisco District Attorney's Office said. Kyra Worthy, a resident of Richmond, California, has been charged with misappropriation of public money, grand theft by embezzlement, submitting fraudulent invoices, wage theft and writing fraudulent checks while she was the head of SF SAFE, a 48-year-old nonprofit that aimed to enhance safety and crime prevention in San Francisco in partnership with the city police department, prosecutors said.

Nina Jankowicz, the one-time (and short-lived) head of the Department of Homeland Security's "Disinformation Governance Board," filed suit against Fox News last year alleging that the network "built a narrative calculated to lead consumers to believe that Jankowicz intended to censor Americans' speech" among other allegations. In a delicious and deserved irony, the judge summarily tossed the suit, writing that, in essence, Fox told the truth. "Fox contends, and I agree, that Jankowicz has not pleaded facts from which it could plausibly be inferred that the challenged statements regarding intended censorship by Jankowicz are not substantially true," U.S. District Judge Colm F. Connolly wrote in his July 22 order to dismiss.

Athletes and teams have been left far from impressed by the food on offer as the Olympic village, just one of a number (of) complaints including a lack of air conditioning, uncomfortable cardboard beds, lengthy walks to the cafeteria and overcrowded buses which do not run on time. Organizers at the Paris Games were determined to make this Olympics the most sustainable of all time, prioritizing a green approach in almost every area.

God and the Trump Shooting 13 replies

It seems like I’m constantly trying to come to an understanding or at least a settled position on how God involves himself in human affairs. The Trump shooting brought that to the surface again, simply because it couldn’t be scripted -- it felt beyond consequence. Also, many people of faith, including people that I see as nuanced and intelligent began claiming that it was almost beyond question, an act of God (Ben Shapiro, for instance). I’ve been all over the board over the years from “there’s no understanding God’s involvement” to determinism (more early in my Christian life), to compatibility, meaning that paradoxically God’s sovereignty and free will aren’t mutually exclusive.

Staff at Children's National Hospital informed the family that he wanted to be female and should be referred to using she/her pronouns going forward, the suit claims.
