SD firefighters fly in fire experts to
tackle lithium battery fire still blazing

On Wednesday, May 15th, Gateway Energy Storage Facility erupted into flames—it’s a San Diego battery storage in a border community—and firefighters contained the blaze before handing operations off to the facility’s own team. But by the very next day, the fire reignited and it’s been going ever since. We’re now on day nine, by the way. Now, according to San Diego journalist Amy Reichert, the San Diego fire department has elected to fly in fire experts to “study” the fire because they have no idea how to manage the blaze, estimating that it may take another week or week-and-a-half to get the fire back under control—meanwhile, poisonous fumes

Comments:

This was touted as a wonderful "green" 'grid scale power storage solution' to store the intermittent solar power and wind power for the times when they aren't working.
And it has been burning for 9 days, and water short San Diego has so far put 5 million gallons of water on it - and still it burns. Yep, lithium batteries are a very dangerous thing. How toxic is that never ending smoke and the runoff water is exactly HOW toxic, going into the ground water?

This is a dumb article. A lithium battery warehouse fire would in no way be comparable to a hotel fire.

Says they are planning to build another 11 around San Diego, I know of one in Poway that will be much closer to homes. This fire has caused many in Poway to wake up to the risks, so that's a positive. There are much better ways to store energy than batteries. I personally like pumping water to a higher a elevation and then releasing when the energy is needed.

Re #1, the point was that a giant hotel fire involving normal materials was easily extinguished compared to these nearly impossible to extinguish lithium battery fires. Some of us understood the point. But, for some any criticism of anything in California is not OK.

Re #2, I used to think the exact same thing......until this happened only a few hours drive east of me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taum_Sauk_Hydroelectric_Power_Station Fortunately, it was in a remote area, and not many people were in the path. Anyone along that stream would have been killed. In any sort of a populated area these can be quite dangerous, too. IIRC there was a disastrous water storage dam failure in southern California in the 60s which caused huge damage in some residential areas. Perhaps some California residents will remember the details. Any energy storage plan can have possible failure modes which release all that stored energy in an uncontrolled manner. At one time, giant spinning flywheels, a ton or more in weight, spinning at 100,00 RPMs in the back of city buses was seriously considered as an energy storage method. But, if the flywheel were to break - the exploding pieces would cause enough mayhem that the idea was quickly abandoned after a few small scale prototypes were tested.

"Oh, the See-Oh-Two!" (said in the same voice as the announcer's "Oh, the Humanity!" in the Hindenburg disaster. But this fire is also releasing Hydrogen Cyanide. Apparently lots of it. link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_cyanide "Hydrogen cyanide (once known as prussic acid) is a chemical compound with the formula HCN and structural formulaH−C≡N. It is a highly toxic and flammable liquid that boils slightly above room temperature, at 25.6 °C (78.1 °F)." Way to Go, Greenie-Weenies! The state has plans to build MANY more of these battery storage facilities all over the state not just SD. It's their attempt to continue the march towards their zero emissions target and using renewable energy sources (solar and wind) which need these batteries to store the energy to use when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing. To help plug those gaps. Wonder if they have potential fires in their EIR plans for all of these battery storage facilities?

The project being planned by AES to build similar plants around San Diego County is called Seguro Battery Energy. Seguro - Spanish for "safe" or "secure". The irony.

In a weird way it reminds me of the Centralia coal fire in Pennsylvania. Been burning 50(?) years. The people pushing green energy might want to check with others going green and see if anyone has successfully implemented it. Otherwise, it's going to be a colossal failure with crushing impact to boot. Read a story the other day where a truck manufacturer in Europe is producing its own batteries. Btw, where did those batteries in San Diego come from?

Lithium ion car batteries can burst into unquenchable flames that burn at 2,500 C (4,500 F) that can melt structural steel and concrete. That's about three times hotter than gasoline flames (840 C or 1,500 F ), which don't melt multi-level parking structures and turn houses with garages into raging infernos. The safest place to store a battery operated car is in a lake at least four feet deep. Make sure that lake is at least 15 meters (50 feet) from anything valuable that might burn.

No one really knows how many Americans regularly carry handguns, concealed or openly. The number of concealed carry licenses doesn’t tell the tale, particularly since 29 states are now “constitutional carry states.” Unless otherwise prohibited by law, Americans need no license to carry concealed weapons in those states. As I recently noted here at AT, some 36 states allow open carry. We do know that April was the 57th consecutive month of more than one million gun sales. It’s reasonable to believe tens of millions of Americans regularly carry, and most don’t advertise the fact. But why should anyone carry? :

Harvard-Harris just dropped its poll of information gathered on May 15-16, and it’s a doozy. If you’re hostile to Democrats and Biden’s presidency, and you support Israel, you’ll love the results of this poll of 1,660 registered voters. It’s easy to get too deep in the weeds with poll results, so I’ll try to give you the top-line information from this cheering poll. Some of the “good” news is actually sad, and that’s the fact that Americans are unhappy with their lives in Biden’s America. Only 55% of Democrats think America is headed in the right direction, while 14% of Republicans and 20% of Independents feel good about America in 2024.

It’s a fine idea to pay tribute to movie stuntmen, those little-known heroes of the silver screen. But one would have to be far more charmed by endless, overloud, and preposterous action scenes and brain-dead fights than I am in order to enjoy The Fall Guy, which I recently watched at the local Bijou. The American Spectator’s Leonora Cravotta is right about the movie’s boy/girl romance and the welcome clear line between good and bad. These are too rare on the large or small screen these days. But for me these positives were cancelled by the aforementioned dreary chaos at industrial decibel levels. No disrespect to the estimable Leonora.

The Bible calls the Jews “a stiff-necked” people. (“The Lord also said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and they are indeed a stiff-necked people.’” Deuteronomy 9:13.) In other words, they’re stubborn, and nothing has been more stubborn than American Jews’ long-standing refusal to acknowledge the rising antisemitism in the heart of the Democrat party. Donald Trump’s pro-Israel record barely swayed them. However, Biden’s blatant anti-Israel policies, combined with the violent antisemitism in academia, may finally be doing the trick. Traditionally, Jews have been second only to blacks in their fealty to the Democrat party. Many of them came from Tsarist Russia, which was fiercely antisemitic.

Social Security protects taxpayers across American society. Without Social Security, millions would face poverty, straining families and state and local governments, increasing inequality, and destabilizing the economy.
