Dispatches from My Coma

Original Article

As readers may recall, in recent years, after announcing a rare bit of activity from yours truly, I have generally observed that I am engaging in such against the advice of my doctors. So it was that I spent over a month in Ukraine, venturing hither and yon and trying to stay one step ahead of the bombs and drones. I was thinking, since that went so well, I'd rest up for a few weeks and maybe head to the Persian Gulf. Alas, that will not now be happening.

Comments:

I am a regular listener to Mark Steyn's weekly audio show where he talks current events and culture. He disappeared in mid-May while in Ukraine. Since then competent and interesting substitute hosts for his show have kept mum about what happened to him. Yesterday Steyn surfaced and explained his absence. I'm happy he is back.

Hmmm. With Steyn, I really wondered for a while if he was just pulling our collective leg. Based on the OP comments, I suppose not. I hope he recovers from whatever ails him. French docs.....not my first choice, but if you get sick in France....

“Sod-bollocking” - what a great descriptive adjective. I have to figure out how to use it.

#2, What ails Steyn, as was detailed in this article, is that he went into a coma. As to the French medical system, Steyn has nothing but good things to say about it. Of course he has the money to pay for his care and the French system does include a fairly robust private section. It is not like Canada where private is forbidden.

Re #4. Yes, I read the article but "went into a coma" is not an ailment. Some underlying cause is what I was hoping he recovers from. A coma is a symptom. Something has to cause it. I hope it wasn't something that is continuing to cut his life short. I hope the French medical care is good. My sister severely broke an ankle in Italy and when I asked her how the Italian hospital (in Rome) was....she said, "It looked like a Turkish prison from a movie." Yikes! She got it stabilized and got a medical evacuation to the USA where pins and screws were needed due to the severity of the brake. It took over six months to heal. I broke a wrist in central Siberia, and while the doctor did very well, and the outcome was good, the X-ray machine looked just like what was used on my when I broke my leg at age 5....in the middle 1950s in the USA. And the building looked like a 1920s NYC immigration waiting area, only not so nice. And that was in 2012 or so. So....foreign medical care is a crap shoot, IMO. Probably French is better than most, maybe by a lot.

A loss of Mark Steyn and/or VDH would leave intellectual holes impossible to fill. Please take care, Gentlemen. Our team needs you more than you can ever know. Losing Rush still has our souls aching.

The other day President Trump Truthed out former Bush speechwriter Marc Thiessen's demand for the failed "decapitation strategy" to be extended to Iran's negotiating team:(Snip)Even though it's a strategic flop for the Yanks and Israelis, the "decapitation strategy" is sufficiently irksome to Tehran that, in the event President Trump is minded to do as his Truth Social hints and resume it, the mullahs would this time reciprocate with a little decapitation of their own.

~As you know, in deference to the divergence of opinion among readers, we are now starting each column by linking to an alternative position to my own - that's to say, a pro-war analysis. (Snip) Meanwhile, back in what passes for the real world, the war aims continue to shrivel. (Snip) So a month ago Iran controlled four per cent of global oil. Now they control twenty per cent - and their parliament's plan is for the "Tehran toll-booth" to become a permanent fixture. Which would mean they control more of the world's oil than America.

~As Month Two begins, the war continues to widen: Many dissatisfied Steyn Club members have accused me of fighting the last war. (Snip}Yesterday, for example, another dozen US servicemen were wounded and multiple refuelling aircraft were crippled at the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. America's military bases in the Gulf are some of the most expensive on the planet, and yet, as with the killing fields of eastern Ukraine, they're highly vulnerable to drones that cost a few thousand bucks. Time to dust off the "Mission Accomplished" banner? ~A Thought for the Day from David Blair in our comments section: It's time to move past your reticence to have initiated the war and get behind Trump. Your fear that it might end badly is noted. "Get behind Trump"? That might be better directed at Vance, Gabbard, Kennedy and other cabinet members whose discomfort with the strange turn of events is palpable either through their sudden absence from public life or when they're testifying to Congress and trying to walk the fine line between not getting fired now and not getting impeached by the incoming Democrat majority in January.

~This news is too sad. From Old Dominion University in Virginia: The victim of the terrorist attack at Old Dominion has been identified as Lt. Col. Brandon Shah-- who was a Professor of Military Science and the leader of the university's ROTC program. So Colonel Shah survived the century's worthless unwon wars including "America's longest war" - Operation Enduring Freedom (how'd that endure, by the way?) - only to come home and die at the hands of one of his "fellow Americans" screaming - go on, take a wild guess; yeah, bingo! - "Allahu Akbar!"

The Trump administration’s messaging on America’s military involvement in Iran has been, to put it lightly, a mess. And it’s clear after listening to his remarks about the conflict that Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., is not helping the situation. Since the U.S.-Israeli-led operation against Tehran began, Graham has rushed to every microphone and television camera available to express his unbridled enthusiasm about the campaign. When he isn’t bragging about how much money the U.S. is going to make as a result of the conflict, he’s calling for more American intervention in countries like Cuba and Lebanon.

They're just messing with us now. From the Epstein files:  STATEMENT OF MANHATTAN U.S. ATTORNEY ON THE DEATH OF DEFENDANT JEFFREY EPSTEIN Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said: "Earlier this morning, the Manhattan Correctional Center confirmed that Jeffrey Epstein, who faced charges brought by this Office of engaging in the sex trafficking of minors, had been found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Today's events are disturbing..." I'll say. For one thing, the statement is dated Friday August 9th 2019, and Mr Epstein was not "found unresponsive in his cell" until Saturday August 10th.

President Donald Trump's push to seize Greenland might be the least popular idea in American political history. Is that hyperbole? If so, that's only because reliable and fast public polling is a relatively recent development within our 250-year experiment in self-governance. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Wednesday found a staggering 4 percent of Americans favor the idea of seizing Greenland with military force. Among Republicans, the idea is actually twice as popular: 8 percent say taking the island is a "good idea."

Britain is in even worse shape than I thought. From the Telegraph: “Air conditioning torn from homes under net zero clampdown.” Homeowners are being forced to tear out air conditioning from their private properties under climate laws, despite rising temperatures. Council planning officers ordered residents to remove air-con units over fears they produce too much carbon dioxide, stating they should only be used as a “last resort”. The net zero clampdown is part of building regulations that state “active cooling” should only ever be allowed when all other means of “passive cooling”, such as opening windows or using fans, have been exhausted. So whether you can air condition your home

Arpit Gupta, an appointee of Mamdani’s predecessor Eric Adams, was the one no vote. It came hours after the public resignation of one of the RGB’s nine members, Christina Smyth, who accused the panel of ignoring its own data during the lengthy process to decide whether to adjust rents —

The UK's unpopular and outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer is leaving a parting gift for the British people by releasing thousands of violent convicts, including foreign-born criminals who are unlikely to be deported. Labour’s prison reform plan has triggered a political storm after the government introduced changes that could send thousands of offenders back into communities earlier than expected. Justice Secretary David Lammy will implement legal changes that will see criminals convicted of murder and sex crimes released later this year. The reforms will allow eligible prisoners to leave custody sooner under revised release rules as part of the Labour government's efforts to reduce prison overcrowding.
