Month Two Begins

~As Month Two begins, the war continues to widen: Many dissatisfied Steyn Club members have accused me of fighting the last war. (Snip}Yesterday, for example, another dozen US servicemen were wounded and multiple refuelling aircraft were crippled at the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. America's military bases in the Gulf are some of the most expensive on the planet, and yet, as with the killing fields of eastern Ukraine, they're highly vulnerable to drones that cost a few thousand bucks. Result? "Iran's Attacks Force U.S. Troops to Work Remotely"

Comments:

As he himself acknowledges, Steyn is not a pom pom waver as far as Epic Fury is concerned. His reasons for skepticism are based on the United States' history of failure in the Middle East, although he asserts that Donald Trump is completely unlike any previous Commander-in-Chief. As tomorrow begins week five of the conflict I am starting to question the assurances of the President, the Secretary of War and the pom pom boys that Iran is on the verge of collapse. After reading several of the links within this article that report many of our bases in the area are uninhabitable due to Iranian strikes I long for a purely factual and sober account of the status of this war.

Regime change is a three legged stool. Military ability, political will and strong internal push. We have only the first two. What do Trump and Hegseth know that we cannot guess at this point?

Time to dust off the "Mission Accomplished" banner? ~A Thought for the Day from David Blair in our comments section: It's time to move past your reticence to have initiated the war and get behind Trump. Your fear that it might end badly is noted. "Get behind Trump"? That might be better directed at Vance, Gabbard, Kennedy and other cabinet members whose discomfort with the strange turn of events is palpable either through their sudden absence from public life or when they're testifying to Congress and trying to walk the fine line between not getting fired now and not getting impeached by the incoming Democrat majority in January.

~This news is too sad. From Old Dominion University in Virginia: The victim of the terrorist attack at Old Dominion has been identified as Lt. Col. Brandon Shah-- who was a Professor of Military Science and the leader of the university's ROTC program. So Colonel Shah survived the century's worthless unwon wars including "America's longest war" - Operation Enduring Freedom (how'd that endure, by the way?) - only to come home and die at the hands of one of his "fellow Americans" screaming - go on, take a wild guess; yeah, bingo! - "Allahu Akbar!"

The Trump administration’s messaging on America’s military involvement in Iran has been, to put it lightly, a mess. And it’s clear after listening to his remarks about the conflict that Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., is not helping the situation. Since the U.S.-Israeli-led operation against Tehran began, Graham has rushed to every microphone and television camera available to express his unbridled enthusiasm about the campaign. When he isn’t bragging about how much money the U.S. is going to make as a result of the conflict, he’s calling for more American intervention in countries like Cuba and Lebanon.

They're just messing with us now. From the Epstein files:  STATEMENT OF MANHATTAN U.S. ATTORNEY ON THE DEATH OF DEFENDANT JEFFREY EPSTEIN Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said: "Earlier this morning, the Manhattan Correctional Center confirmed that Jeffrey Epstein, who faced charges brought by this Office of engaging in the sex trafficking of minors, had been found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Today's events are disturbing..." I'll say. For one thing, the statement is dated Friday August 9th 2019, and Mr Epstein was not "found unresponsive in his cell" until Saturday August 10th.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) on Wednesday said the country needs a national conversation about immigrants lacking permanent legal status who “obey the law,” as public opinion sours on the Trump administration’s deportation sweeps. President Donald Trump's push to seize Greenland might be the least popular idea in American political history. Is that hyperbole? If so, that's only because reliable and fast public polling is a relatively recent development within our 250-year experiment in self-governance. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Wednesday found a staggering 4 percent of Americans favor the idea of seizing Greenland with military force. Among Republicans, the idea is actually twice as popular: 8 percent say taking the island is a "good idea."

~How was your Thanksgiving? On a day to give thanks for all the blessings of America, it fell to Gary Beckstrom to announce to the world the death of his twenty-year-old daughter, Sarah. That will taint Thanksgiving every year for the rest of Mr Beckstrom's life - in part because his child's blood is on the hands not just of her killer but of the public policy that enabled the murderer to be on the streets of what passes for the national capital.

March 20, 2026, marked a turning point in the 2026 Iran war, when Iran launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles at the joint U.K.–U.S. military base on Diego Garcia, a remote island in the Indian Ocean. Although both missiles failed to reach their target—one malfunctioned in flight, while the other was successfully intercepted—the attack sent shockwaves through Western Europe. This missile proved that the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had lied for years about the true range of Iran’s missile arsenal. Khamenei claimed Iran’s missiles could not threaten beyond the Middle East and their range had been limited to 2,000 kilometers.

After two months of unyielding negotiations, both parties gave up early Friday on reaching a grand accord to reform and fund the Department of Homeland Security. Instead, Senate Republicans accepted what Democrats have been offering for weeks — cash for all of DHS except for ICE and part of Customs and Border Protection. The Senate approved the funding package by a voice vote and is now expected to begin a scheduled two-week recess. The House could vote as soon as Friday, before the shutdown would break the record Saturday night for the longest funding lapse of any federal agency in U.S. history. Senate Majority Leader John Thune called the outcome “unfortunate” Friday.
