California lawmakers are considering a bill that would give preference to African American applicants seeking occupational licenses, for such professions as teaching, nursing, counseling, electrical work and others, especially those who are descendants of slaves. (snip) Under current law, only veterans are eligible for such prioritization.
Mr. Gipson argued in the analysis that if such priority can be granted to veterans, similar standards should be applicable to African-American applicants. (snip) The bill, which will now be heard in the Assembly’s Appropriations Committee, passed the Assembly’s Business and Professions Committee on a 13–2 vote last week.

No.
Why?
Because veterans come in all colors, and the preference is not based on the color, but the service.
Blacks only come in one color, (yeah, I know. Don't even start.),
and the preference is (again) un-earned.

Why blacks? Why not Asians or Hispanics? Or whites? It is discrimination. How about merit?

The Civil War ended in 1865. 99 years later in 1964 the Civil Rights bill was passed. We have Affirmative Action jobs, we have DEI, now in California they want to give blacks preference in seeking operational licenses. We have had a black President we now have a black or multiracial Vice President.
Isn't it time we stopped with the preferences?

This is not about equality. It's about preferential treatment.

Totally unconstitutional. Doubt there is a judge left in Commefornia who has read or cares about it.

PS: Bkack Mr. Gipaon has nothing to support this:
“There has been historical longstanding deficiencies and internal barriers … [for] African Americans seeking professional work, and by prioritizing their applications, we are bridging the gap of professional inequities of under representation and under compensation,” Mr. Gipson said in a bill analysis.
Just another black vote panderer.

So ... if you need the services of such a professional, choose the best qualified individual (i.e. not the one who was given a pass on the requirements).

Question: Is the Government of California saying blacks are too stupid to get these licenses on their own?

Absolutely illegal RACISM. ILLEGAL, unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment and the 1964 Civil Rights law.

Let's pass a law, that Kalifornia legislators can only hire/use affirmative action employees, for everything. Drs, lawyers, teachers for their children, private pilots, cooks, mechanics, electricians, plumbers, and everything else. Let them put their money where their mouths are.

So being Afro-American descended from slave is in and of itself on par with vets who slogged through the mud in far away places to defend freedom and to maybe come home with a permanent injury. It seems to me that this proposal is actually patronizing. So the benefactors of this proposal are unable to reach their goals without a hand-up. But I guess these second class folks just do not have the wherewithal to reach the pinnacles of law, medicine or politics. Maybe preference should also be provided in those areas. I recently read that the bar exam will no longer be a requirement for new attorneys. "What a country."

We are all descendants of slaves because at some point in history our countries of origin were invaded by conquering armies and the people enslaved. As working taxpayers we are slaves right now. Stop the madness!

Been there, done that. Some applications when I was growing up even detailed how much being black, Hispanic, or otherwise protected, counted toward getting a job. If you were one of those, you had to be a criminal awaiting trial and lied about it, or a drooling, brain dead incompetent to be passed over for qualified candidates.
