Former House speaker Kevin McCarthy said Thursday he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he had made a deal with Democrats to stave off his ouster from House leadership — as Speaker Mike Johnson did this week. The House dismissed a motion to oust Johnson on Wednesday night after Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R., Ga.) triggered a floor vote on her resolution. A motion to table Greene’s measure won support from 196 Republicans and 163 Democrats. I don’t think Speaker Johnson is trying to ‘keep’ the Speakership so much. But preventing it from falling into Democrat hands, going into an election. It is McCarthy who has struck a blow for the ‘Rats by quitting Congress prematurely.

And now you have Rep Lawler (R-NY) wanting Chip Roy and Thomas Massie removed from their committees because they supported MTG. This is the same Lawler who forced the ouster of George Santos costing the Rs another conservative vote.

The GOP's majority is so razor thin and the MTG/Gaetz types so obstreperous that relying on both parties to pass legislation or prevent another idiotic round of Speakership voting is admittedly distasteful but required.

MAGA implies that America was great some time in the past. Most folks would say that America was great during and after WWII; however, the Speaker of the House from 1940 to 1961, democrat Sam Rayburn, pushed through the House legislation that was critical to the war effort, before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Rayburn pushed passage of the Lend-Lease Act in 1941, which resulted in food, petroleum, and war materiel being sent to the UK, China, and Russia - all fighting the Axis powers, while isolationists from both parties had the US on the sidelines, until Dec 7, 1941. Rayburn also got support from Republicans to extend the draft by a very narrow margin, 203 - 202. Allowing the draft to sunset would have resulted in the Army to lose about 2/3rds of its strength and 3/4ths of its officer corps - very damaging to the U.S. ability to respond after Pearl Harbor. Later in the war, Rayburn secured $1.6B in funding for the Manhattan Project, yielding the atomic bombs dropped on Japan and hastening the end of the war without having the 1 million estimated U.S. casualties, had we been forced to invade the Japanese homeland. Point is, since our constitution was ratified, great achievements coming out of Congress have typically required a degree of bipartisan support, which makes for some strange bedfellows. Conversely, I'm not aware of a Republican government, holding the WH with a clear majority in Congress and on the Supreme Court, unfettered by pesky democrats or the plethora of third parties that have emerged and faded during our history, that played a significant role in making America great. For most of the history of the GOP, it has been characterized by factions within the party. Whether one considers the "Half Breeds" vs the "Stalwarts" of the late 1800s the GOP has rarely been considered monolithic, except perhaps a short period of conservative fervor under RW Reagan in the early 80s.

Think about that: Seventy-five percent of the UN is in favor of granting nationhood to a people whose raison d'être is to commit genocide against a UN nation. President Biden’s red line against a major Israeli military operation on Rafah has left Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a crossroads: Any major move to crush Hamas in its last stronghold in southern Gaza could trigger an unprecedented break in ties with the U.S., while failing to take decisive action could cause his political coalition to crumble at home. “Israel has to make its decisions,” White House national security communications adviser John Kirby said Thursday. “We understand that, and we’ll have to make ours based on what they do.
