a ‘Moral Obligation

Pope Francis said Sunday that military disarmament is not optional but constitutes a “moral obligation” for all nations.
Following his weekly Angelus address in Saint Peter’s Square, the pontiff recalled that March 5 marks the second International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness.
“How many resources are wasted on military expenditure, which, because of the current situation, sadly continues to increase!” he told the estimated 20,000 tourists and pilgrims gathered in the square. (snip) Francis is also the only pope to ever declare that not only the use of nuclear weapons, but also their mere possession “is immoral.”

If I hadn't left the Catholic religion in my early adulthood, this guy would have driven me out. He is the most visible representation of the decline of the church into irrelevancy.

Tending to agree with the pope. In this imperfect world, armies form for the purpose of assault, and or deterrence. Weapons that target noncombatants are truly immoral. We banned gas, we banned bioweapons…nukes are worse than both…

Sure, Frankie!
Dismiss all your Swiss Guards, then carry your message to Russia (presently invading Ukraine), China (preparing to invade Taiwan), Hamas (recently invaded Israel), Iran (reportedly preparing to invade Israel), and all the Hamas Thugs, Hezbolla Thugs, Houthi Thugs, Chinese Thugs (murdering the Uyghurs), and the various Thugs in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and South Africa..... for a start!
And when you're done with them, carry your message of Disarmament to the Thugs in Detroit, Chicago, New York, Saint Louis, Seattle, Portland, Memphis, New Orleans, Jackson, Atlanta, Miami, and most of all, to WASHINGTON, DC!

You have God, people that think they are God (they aren't), people that think they speak for God (they don't), and people that believe their religion is the word of God (is it?). This is why one should only put their faith in God.

Honestly, other than a few radical lie-berals, who actually pays any attention to what this pope says anymore?
I'm not Catholic (good old Southern Baptist girl here). But I work with a lot of Catholics in the pro-life movement here in Texas. Because of their solid stand against abortion, I have loved the last few popes. But I don't know of any Catholics that have anything good to say about this pope. They are just all hoping he will follow Benedict's lead and retire soon.

the man is hard to defend. OK, the principle he is putting forth is that military expenditures have to have a benefit that outwieighs their cost. That is fine, Where he has no expertise and oughta shut up, is weighing whether that is true. The Holy Father is entitled to a polite listen, when he talks about matters of faith and morals affecting the entire church. He is not entitled to a specially polite listen, when he applies the principles to specific situations. There you have it. Further, a polite listen is not infallibility, for all the worriers. This is not remolely in that territory. So: his principle is reasonable; his application is uninformed and he is driving outside his lane in attempting it.
