The Mexican Navy announced on Thursday that it has begun a search-and-rescue mission in the Caribbean Sea for two sailboats carrying "humanitarian aid" to Cuba.
Reuters describes the vessels as "sailboats" and says they left Isla Mujeres, in the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo, last week. They did not arrive in Havana as scheduled on Tuesday or Wednesday. The journey is about 300 to 350 miles, depending on the route. Combined, the two boats had nine people on board, including eight adults and a four-year-old child. Reuters also reports that they were a part of the "Nuestra America Convoy."

The ocean doesn't suffer fools easily. It is very unforgiving of any incapacity or errors.

And those waters have sharks. I hope it’s nothing more than a comms failure.

Considering the mental confusion inherent in radical leftists, they most likely sank themselves, having no leadership and boating experience.

Do any of these 'activists' have any idea how to operate a sailboat?
As #1 notes, the ocean is very unforgiving.
I may add, if you are used to recreational boating on a lake or river, that as soon as you are far enough from shore that you cannot swim to it, you are in a different, and potentially lethal, environment.
I hope the little kid is OK.
I have NO sympathy for the foolish adults.

I'm waiting for someone to blame President Trump for the missing boats, by claiming that the military assumed they were drug runners and sank them...

The report says the captain and crews are "experienced sailors," and the boats are appropriately equipped.
So there's reason to hope.
And especially when I think about the child aboard, four years old, I think the parents/guardians should lose custody, but I hope not to the sea.

I didn't see any mention of the weather. It can be deadly if there is no harbor nearby to run to. My first cousin was on a sailboat in the Caribbean when a quick storm blew up. The boat owner was a very experienced and competent sailor but they became in a life threatening situation fighting the high wind and couldn't get the main sale down. They were at the point of cutting the mast with the emergency ax when the wind eased a little and they got through the storm. My cousin could laugh about it later and said he would never get near water again unless it was in his bathtub. I don't want anything bad to happen to those people, fools that they are, and especially an innocent child who had no choice about going. As No.1 posted, the sea is unforgiving.

Don't worry, they will turn up in someplace like Tierra del Fuego or New Zealand in a couple of years - or not. I feel sorry for the four-year-old, having been born to a couple of morons.

This falls into the category of Leftist stupidity and arrogance. It's the same reason that people have been shot and killed by ICE. The Leftists think they can do whatever they want without consequence with total disregard for the realities of a situation. Then reality raps them over the head with a club and they whine and cry about it.
What does that tell you about their ability to think rationally, about anything?

If you want a really effective boat "aid" convoy, call Greta at (222) 222-2222.

Pictures I found online show them to be two heavily laden cruising catamarans. Havana is 300 nautical miles dead upwind from Isla Mujeres, and cruising catamarans don’t go upwind very well at all under sail. Even under power it’s difficult, slow and uncomfortable pounding into the seas. So it’s not uncommon for such sailboats to be thought “overdue” when they are actually just holed up somewhere resting and/or licking their wounds. What is unusual however, most cruisers have some form of high seas comms these days. Between Sat phones, Starlink, Spot-type devices and old-fashioned SSB radio, most sailors have some way to communicate.

Excellent posts, all. Having friends with sailboats, I came to learn that if you wanna be somewhere at an appointed time, a sailboat is NOT your first option! As noted, the prevailing trade winds are east-to-west, making it a slog beating into the wind, with a long tack northeast, then southeastward. Plenty of hazards, natural and man-made (actual no-kidding Pirates Of The Caribbean). I pray for their safety, but as #1 succintly stated, the sea is most unforgiving.
The catamaran is faster than a monohull, but still a long ride (guessing at least 36 hours)

Where'd they go? Are they gone? The sea is a place that can swallow anything on its surface. These are people who are not smart. Most communists are stupid people. The rest are dedicated enemies.

As others have posted, liberals are not deep thinkers and don't consider the consequences of their nutty actions. Maybe got the idea from Greta's failed 'humanitarian' mission. Unfortunately they take their children with them.

Smart people would travel in a convoy together to help each other out in case of trouble at sea. We are dealing with Leftists who dress in pink so what do you think the problem might be?

I have sailed the ocean with a good friend on his medium sized sailboat many times. When you are many miles from land and a storm brews up, you damned well better understand precisely how to reduce sail size, or reef it down, and what direction to take big swells. Sailing in the "desired" direction is often not safe with large waves, take them wrong on the hull and you'll capsize or otherwise founder.
Incapacity or error are instantly punished, no excuses, no second chance.
Fools and the ocean don't mix well.

Cuba is watching out for a US invasion, would make for a nice surprise. Didn't Cuba just shoot out a similar boat last month?
