NASA’s chief on Tuesday said the US space agency will invest $20 billion to develop a base on the Moon, while suspending its plans to create the lunar orbital space station known as Gateway. The agency intends to pause Gateway in its current form and shift focus to infrastructure that enables sustained surface operations,” Jared Isaacman said in a statement given during a day-long event at NASA headquarters in Washington. Despite challenges with some existing hardware, the agency will repurpose applicable equipment and leverage international partner commitments to support these objectives,” he said.
The European Space Agency among other international organizations were partners on the planned Gateway project.

It would be far easier and far cheaper to launch satellites from a moon base.

Really? $20M will buy some really nice beach houses. Nick Shirley and his contemporaries might want to keep an eye on that.

God intends for us to stay right here to take care of the earth as He commanded! We are to be stewards of all the plants, animals, and ourselves. Going off to the moon or Mars is avoiding God’s will.

20 billion? Would think it would cost more (more like a trillion). Considering the track record of our federal government, can see this being used for all sorts of dirty deals.

Space exploration should use private money, not taxpayer money. NASA is a leftwing propaganda mill. Dump NASA

It seems to me like lately private outfits have been much more successful than NASA.
What has NASA done for us lately?

Mayor Pete, upon hearing this news: "All well and good, but I'd much rather explore Uranus..."

Does anyone think it will last any longer than NASA's "SkyLab" of the early 1970's?

May I remind you that anything the government touches, eventually turns into a pile of do do....it's just another big hole to dump money into...

NASA hasn't built anything in decades! The only thing NASA does is manage the contractors who do the actual work.

1,
What sense is there in sending a satellite 240,000 miles to the moon then 218,000 miles BACK to geostationary orbit? If the idea is to achieve a launch platform that is easier to reach escape velocity then launching from the moon only works when the satellites and rockets are MANUFACTURED on the moon.

Ah yes.... Another Grand Plan from NASA, who ever since their Apollo glory days have been searching for the Next Great Thing.
-Mission to Planet Earth (trying in vain to please the leftist Greenie-Weenies).
-The Single-Stage-to-Orbit Aerospace Plane -that flopped.
-Going to Mars- that never launched a single rocket.
-The Hypersonic Airliner- that was never built.
-The Mission to Visit an Asteroid - that never got off the ground.
-Under Obama, Halting all American space exploration, and Telling the Muzzies How Good they were at Space Science.
Between the Politicians changing their minds every couple of years as to what to do, the Lamestreams criticizing everything they can find (as space exploration does not advance the DEI Welfare State) and the resulting risk-averse mentality of the Bureaucrats running the agency, NASA's capability has become less, and less, and less as the years go by.
Heck, NASA has not even had the capability to get people to the Space Station, in low earth orbit since 2011. NASA had to hire the Russians, and now contracts with SpaceX to do that.
IF they get the OK from Congress, the ONLY sure thing is that..... They'll SPEND ALL THE MONEY!

Terrible idea. Within a year or two it will become a military competition, dividing up the Moon like we have Antarctica. America can't pay for our own security at the moment.

A moon base for much less than a $135 billion train to nowhere? If Trump is involved it could happen.
