In Ohio and other states, the number of people locked up in jails and prisons has increased dramatically over the past four decades.
Many, including Ohio, are taking steps to reduce those numbers. [SNIP]
Those who get locked up are much more likely to be people of color — 69% — didn’t complete high school — 62% — received public assistance before turning 18 — 42% — and had been homeless or lived in subsidized housing while still a child — 31%.

Equality means everyone should be punished equally for the same crime, not that incarcerations must align with racial demographics.

In the vast majority of these cases the problem is being in single parent homes raised by mothers on the dole.
Kids with 2 parents and kids raised by single fathers have much greater success in life.

Arrest more people who arent 'youths trying to get their lives together and going back to school'. That should make it equitable.

Prison is like a school for crime for young people. The old timers teach them tricks they never thought of, making them that more dangerous when they are released. Problem is, what do you do with them besides send them to prison? What other kind of punishment is there that would teach them any kind of lesson? All I can think of is some kind of isolation for a month, no cell phone, no computer, no social contact, maybe in a room in a house or in a business building where most people now work remotely. Give them food, etc. but keep them isolated. Maybe that would teach them a bit. Oh, and put a Bible in the room. The Gideons will help with that.

BULLshirt.
Putting criminals behind bars makes us NON-criminals far safer. And I do NOT care about "equality"....except to have a fair chance at some criminal minority member NOT being out and harming me or my family.

Inequality of opportunity and access to opportunity may affect social unrest and crime. These people are lamenting the inequality of outcome. That should have no bearing.

Most of us feel that hard core criminals should be locked up and the key thrown away. Problem is prisons and prison guards cost money and, in most states if not all, the prison budget is at the bottom. I'm ambivalent about it. My solution is to expedite death sentence cases and use all executed prisoners' bodies for medical training and research.

Do you treat the murderer like everyone else?
Do you treat a rapist like everyone else?
You treat all murderers the same. You treat all rapists the same. That's fair.
Equality is a myth. We are not equal.

This from the Mistake On The Lake, yet another Democorruptic-run city, where violent crime is 336% (1 in 61) above the national average and property crime is 120% (1 in 23) above the national average.

A young black male is 7 times more likely to murder someone than a young white male. That's just a fact.
The leading cause of death among young black men is being murdered by another young black man. That's another fact.
Black 'leaders' need to have both of those stats tattooed on the backs of their eyelids and then start to get to the root of the problem... the behavior of young black men.

The statistics show that the average criminal has been a loser and failed at everything else in life, didn't finish HS, living on welfare, in public housing.
And 69% are "of color".
Standard description #1.

Did they do the crimes?
The problem isn't the punishment, if the numbers of offenders is going up over the very same laws...clearly the punishment isn't harsh enough to deter the culture that condones and promotes such criminality.
They gripe about the color of the offenders caught and convicted, they decline to mention that the victims of those criminals match the color of those doing it.
Haveing worked in gang interdiction, crime control, "Take back our streets" programs and scared straight programs the hardest thing to get across to many of these people that the "Getting Caught" is NOT the problem, it is doing the stuff you get caught for. It is hard to get across because they have done the same offenses dozens or hundreds of times and NOT been caught for it, or if caught NOT punished for it. The concept of "If you don't DO THAT, you cannot be caught and punished for DOING THAT" Is completely foreign to them.
And yes, there are other people doing the same things and not getting caught...particularly the low level drug dealing stuff, and selling stolen goods stuff...but WHERE they do it is different, they do it behind closed doors...not right out on the street where OF COURSE you are more likely to be seen, caught, filmed, reported, arrested, and convicted. Even in "poor" neighborhoods and college campuses where LOTS of low level drugs stuff takes place it is NEVER out on the street corner.
Because they are not IDIOTS.

This nonsensical theory sounds like it came from some delusional college professor who never goes out on the street. NOTHING makes us less safe than having savage animals running loose. NOTHING. Children living without a father, living on welfare and subsidized housing only means that their parents and family were also substandard human beings. Break the cycle, get a real non-DEI education and an honest job. It's not all that difficult.
