Rosalynn Carter, who as first lady worked tirelessly on behalf of mental health reform and professionalized the role of the president’s spouse, died Sunday at the age of 96, according to the Carter Center.
Carter passed away peacefully with family by her side at her home in Plains, Georgia, the center said in a statement.
“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, said in a statement. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”

From what I remember when they were in the White House, she was the epitome of the gentle Southern lady. Rest in peace, Miss Rosalynn.

Many of us here know the pain of losing your spouse, whether expected or not, it is the great loss of a lifetime. Peace and rest be granted to a great woman. Comfort and the blessing of memories to President Carter. They did not have to mention their faith in Almighty God, it was evidenced in what they did.

A true helpmate who knew to stay mostly in the background while supporting her man all his life. I know Jimmy is devastated and they both need our prayers. RIP Rosalynn.

She would likely have been a political enemy of everyone on this thread. So that measures her character that no one here has spoken ill of her. Rest in peace, dear lady.

96, that's a hell of a life span. And it appeared she had her wits about her. Yes, we would probably not have agreed on a lot but she always came across as a decent, kind person. Never gave the impression that she actually ran the show behind the scenes. Mr. Carter was not a good president but I thought that was mainly from inexperience not because he was a dim bulb like our current resident. They were a kind southern couple devoted to each other. No need for one to CYA for the other. Wouldn't be surprised if Jimmy joined her soon. RIP

Good riddance to bad nasty rubbish. Jimmah wasn't much better. Quietly ineffectual and useless.

This is a time to stand in awe of their 77 years together, and wish the family consolation and continuity.

Long married couples often pass close to each other once one of them goes....likely to be the case here.
Folks also often go after a certain milestone or particular date...Thanksgiving, Christmas, News Years, a birthday or anniversary.
I don't expect Yimmy to last through New Years.
I didn't care for him as a President, not even a little...Many of my friends and their parents were "All in " on the guy when he was running, and some still blame his failure in office on "Evil Republicans" that "Limited what he could do", from my perspective those Repubs kept it from being even more catastrophic.
Today the world is still paying severe costs for his cutting the legs out from under The Shah.THAT is Carter's most lasting Legacy.

Sad news. Compared to the rubbish Democrat couples who came after them, the Clintoons, the Obozos, and the Bribens, the Carters were decent people.

The CNN article was most slobberly flattering and many posters have repeated the CNN dog whistle that Rosalynn was a dear sweet lady. Apparently those of that mindset never heard how cold she was and how not very nice she was to the Whitehouse colored staff.

When I think of her, all I can remember is a shocking photo of her standing in a WH receiving line in her stocking feet with her shoes parked at the wall behind her. Such class.
