The Department of Defense scrambled fighter jets to intercept a private jet that entered Washington DC airspace and later crashed into mountainous terrain in southwest Virginia, officials said. The F-16s caused a sonic boom that shook houses across the US Capital at around 3pm as they took off from Andrews Air Force Base in high speed pursuit of the Cessna Citation, a US official told Reuters. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told The Independent the aircraft had taken off from Tennessee bound for New York but had crashed into a sparsely populated area near Staunton, about 150 miles southwest of

The air defense aircraft do occasionally launch, maybe 10% of the time, but mostly just a heightened state of ground alert if there is someone near the National Capitol Region Temporary Flight Restriction area and not in contact with Air Traffic Control. Usually an aircraft is out of radio contact for a few minutes, until they get a call on Guard frequency and talk to ATC. This jet apparently was following a weird unpredictable flight path, perhaps due to incapacitation of the pilot(s).

Sounds like there was a problem with the O2 system. Everyone on board was probably dead before the plane reached New York. It would have continued to follow a preprogramed course that was inputted in the auto-pilot. The plane would have flown until it ran out of fuel then crashed.

A few years ago when Obama was president, he was visiting Seattle and some clown decided to ignore the no fly zone that's put up when the President is around. Jets based in the Portland area were here in about 7 minutes and forced the plane to land. We heard the sonic boom and it is loud. About 6pm on 9/11, I was in the house when I heard a small plane flying overhead and rushed out just in time to see two navy jets flying barely over the tops of the evergreen trees in our backyard. All the neighbors rushed out at that sound. The pilot was forced to land at a small airport near Everett Wa. One of my neighbors, an elderly gentleman, was almost in tears at what had happened that day. I found out later that as a young 18yr. old he was a sailor on a ship in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrendered.

Years ago I was flying to Gainesville, GA in a Cessna 172 with a pilot friend of mine. This was some 55 years ago when we had minimal navigation tools. I had the charts in my lap and said, “Hell, we just flew over restricted air space.” It was, I think, a heavy water nuclear facility in the area but they didn’t scramble any jets for us. 1975 or thereabouts. I went on to father two sons so I guess it didn’t affect our reproductive abilities.

Sonic booms used to happen very frequently and were called "the sound of freedom". My father routinely exceeded Mach 1 in the early 60s in his F4 Phantom jet fighter, not fighter jet. Now people wet their pants.

It certainly sounds like a Payne Stewart-style decompression. The only fly-in-the-ointment is that one of the reports say the plane reversed course at some point. If the pilot was incapacitated unless there was a pre-programmed diversion to reverse course (doubtful), I'd have some questions. But then again, first reports are often wrong. My sympathy to the owner, who may have lost a number of family members in this accident.

Several bad takes on this situation. Apparently we now have a generation of DC workers who have never previously heard a sonic boom. Also we have a press corp that takes an accident that killed a family and turns it into a political story about the NRA and Republican donors.

A wild wolverine was spotted multiple times in California last month, only the second specimen to be verified by experts in the past century, according to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. Over a two-week period in May, the wolverine was reported twice in Inyo National Forest and once in Yosemite National Park. Photos and video of the animal were analyzed by U.S. Forest Service experts, who confirmed it was the same creature due to its body proportions, coloration and movement. "Wolverines can travel great distances, making it likely that the recent sightings are all of the same animal

Most theater, film and television awards feature gendered performance categories, but in recent years, some theater ceremonies have done away with male/female distinctions. Not the Tony Awards, Broadway's highest honors. But this June, for the first time, there's a chance that a couple of non-binary performers will take home statues. "You say: I'm going to my doctor, I'm going to my dentist, and I need to hire a plumber." Newell, who is a self-described non-binary, non-gender-conforming actor, is nominated for

Last Thursday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson held an event with law enforcement personnel and other “community leaders” to unveil his Memorial Day weekend “safety plan.” Holiday weekends in Chicago are notoriously violent, so Johnson’s attempt to curb it constituted his first “big test” as mayor. The consistent and senseless violence on holiday weekends is also why it was disappointing to hear so little substance during the event. Johnson briefly discussed how the Office of Emergency Management and Communications would “monitor citywide events and weather conditions” and all relevant agencies would coordinate with one another.
