It's Official: Before Musk, Twitter Was

Before the Elon Musk buyout, Twitter looks like the worst-run tech company ever with new revelations about lax security, no oversight, and a corporate culture geared towards hiding the ugly truth from the company’s own board of directors and the FTC. Former CEOs Jack Dorsey and Parag Agrawal have some ‘splainin to do. Almost unnoticed among the more salacious #TwitterFiles reveals from Matt Taibbi, Bari Weiss, and Michael Shellenberger, “the stuff uncovered in the Twitter whistleblower report is much crazier,” according to Twitter user Avid Halaby. Halaby did a deep dive into the newly released insider materials, and his Twitter thread shows a company that was a Rube Goldberg device

This article proves, yet again, that any enterprise built on and managed by a disdain for the rule of law, reason, logic, and just plain old Christian values of right vs wrong is a house of cards, destined for failure. Growing beards, wearing earrings, getting tattoos, and wearing T-shirts to work, etc. may make social/cultural fashion statements, but are not credible substitutes for legitimate business practices.

I want to make two points. First, the only reason a company like Twitter would have the types of security problems described in this article was because someone key to running the company wanted it that way (and, it almost certainly required that someone in the federal government wanted it that way). Second, fixing the problems will be less difficult than the article suggests.

When one logs into Twitter to see what is really happening…anyone with Tech experience could do the math! 3X too many people! I’ve seen large bank web sites run by 50 people! Production and Development! And they interface with hundreds of applications on multiple platforms from MVS to RISC to AS/400!

Gee - - and all along I thought Jack Dorsey was a buttoned-up, hands-on, workaholic executive - - running a lean, tight ship. And - - I was kind of hoping that his Rasputin-Mad Monk look would be adopted by every manly male. Gosh - - how could I have been so wrong?

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday charged Sam Bankman-Fried, the embattled former CEO of cryptocurrency giant FTX and trading firm Alameda Research, with defrauding investors. "FTX’s collapse highlights the very real risks that unregistered crypto asset trading platforms can pose for investors and customers alike," said Gurbir S. Grewal, director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement, in a statement. Bankman-Fried had been arrested Monday in the Bahamas after federal prosecutors in New York filed criminal charges contained in a sealed indictment, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force. Damian Williams, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said on Monday that specific charges were expected to be unsealed Tuesday.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed new rules on Friday that would restrict the use of refrigerators, air conditioning equipment and heat pumps that utilize hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). The EPA’s proposed rule would crack down on the manufacturing and importing of goods containing HFCs, which would restrict the use of HFCs in refrigeration units, air conditioning systems and heat pump equipment starting in 2025, according to an agency press release. In accordance with the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, a global climate treaty that the Senate ratified in September, the agency intends to reduce the production and consumption of HFCs by 85% by 2036. “With this latest proposal

Amsterdam is launching an offensive to attract tourists interested first and foremost in its architecture and museums, and to bar those who are primarily attracted by its Red Light District and drug dens. These so-called “coffee shops” will soon be closed to foreigners anyway, if the city can get around the legal obstacles to enforce such a controversial measure. In a policy document published last week, the city also declares war on stag and hen parties in the infamous district, as well as on on pub crawls, smoking pot in public, loud party boats, the prostitution industry, and home owners renting their apartments for short stays. An apparent threat by Michigan's Democrat Attorney General Dana Nessel to arrest and prosecute local activists promoting election integrity and anti-voter fraud efforts caused many of them to steer clear of a contentious monitoring effort out of fear of being targeted by the government, according to a Michigan attorney deeply involved in the situation. Across Michigan on Wednesday, dozens of counties and hundreds of precincts began a recount for two controversial ballot proposals that were approved by voters on Nov. 8. The first measure in question is Proposal 2, which establishes early voting, expands access to absentee voting and preempts Republican efforts to enact more stringent voter ID rules.

Viktor Bout — “The Merchant of Death” or “The Lord of War” — is not a very nice man. He sells arms to groups that kill innocent people. And according to all accounts, he particularly loves killing Americans. Just before he was arrested in a brilliant sting operation by the DEA in 2008, Bout told the informants who were just about to rat him out “that he had been fighting the U.S. for about 15 years and that the U.S. is an enemy,” and that “He was very eager and anxious to carry out this arms deal to kill Americans.” Way to go, Joe. And while the ex-president trails Biden in a theoretical head-to-head rematch, DeSantis holds a narrow lead over the Democrat of about four points.

Earlier today, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell discussed the greatest problem for the Republican Party as it exists with voters. Allowing people to vote is not in the best interests of the Republican Party. If the politicians could just devise a government system that didn’t need voters to support it, things would be much better. As noted by Mitch McConnell, “Our ability to control the primary outcome was quite limited in 2022 because of the support of the former president. Hopefully in the next cycle, we’ll have quality candidates everywhere.”
