An Australian state has asked citizens to surrender machetes at disposal bins ahead of a statewide ban on the weapons aimed at combating knife crime.
Australia’s state of Victoria on Thursday announced that more than 40 machete disposal bins will be available at police stations across the state to allow citizens to safely get rid of the weapons without a penalty before the Sept. 1 ban begins.
"Owning, carrying, using, buying, or selling a machete without a valid exemption or approval will be a criminal offense," the Victorian government said in a statement.
The government is running a "Machete Amnesty" period from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30 to support the safe disposal

I hope Australians have more sense. If not, they deserve what they get.

To be followed with bans on tire irons and baseball bats. Those who use objects to harm others will still be treated with all kindness and understanding.

Next up: steak knives (they don't eat red meat anyway, apparently).
Gone are these days:
"Sue Charlton: [cautiously] He's got a knife.
Crocodile Dundee: [chuckles] That's not a knife.
[he pulls out a large Bowie knife]
Crocodile Dundee: *That's* a knife."

Oh, what a great idea. So clever. So caring.
They did this in Britain with knife-collection bins. The sheep obediently took their pointy sharp things and put them in bins on the street, anonymously of course.
And the bad guys? STOLE THE FILLED BINS!
We have allowed the world to descend into its common human denominator, warring tribal factions. The high trust cultures developed over centuries of cooperative achievement have been attacked relentlessly, corroded, crumbled. Now the 3rd world low trust, "me first", "what's good for MY tribe is good", self-centered vicious, violent, thieving, cheating, stealing, "if I get away with it it's good", culture is metastasizing.
Be prepared to defend yourself. No one else will.

Thirty odd years ago when learning martial arts, we were taught to use many weapons, some edged. My own specialty was to perform hyungs (kata) with twin machetes. That took a lot of practice. In the beginning, we used safe implements before being introduced to the real thing. Then, slow motion repetition, gradually increasing the speed, them adding the second weapon. When a martial artist can control two weapons simultaneously, it's pretty awesome to see. Once I saw a Tang Soo master (seventh degree black belt) with twin combat knives spinning in perfectly coordinated figure-8's, in all directions. I asked my intructor (a fifth degree black belt) what to do if faced with twin knives from a true expert. He said, "Run." I've still got my machetes. No plans to go Down Under for a demo. The video from Cincinnati a few days ago showed a woman on the ground being kicked repeatedly by the feral women from the hood. I propose that they have their feet cut off. Medicaid would then have to buy them a wheelchair but that would cost less than housing them and feeding them in prison.

Good thing Crocodile Dundee was filmed 40 years ago. Somehow, I don't see how Mick wielding a paring knife would have scared off that group of "kids having fun."

Just as much damage can be done to the human body by large kitchen knives, will they be the next target of the apparent overriding Australian Government?

Related: Why do the Aussies follow the Brits on "weapon control" (and bans) when statistics clearly show that the murder rate is higher in London now than before the gun-ban that was put in place after a nut shot up a school in Dunblane in (IIRC) 1996? The only thing that has changed was the murder weapon of choice -- now a butcher knife, since guns aren't so readily available. It somehow escapes policy makers that those with murderous minds will find a weapon to do the deed and that the weapon itself doesn't matter.

Sad to see the Aussies go down the path of Total Submission.
I wonder when.... or IF... . they will figure out that disarming the Citizens (which is the Government's objective) does not reduce crime.
To reduce crime, one has to remove the Criminals from the free society.
Put the Thugs in Prison or Dirt-nap 'em.

I recall an old Archie Bunker quote when his daughter mentions how many people were killed by guns. His reply was 'would it make you feel better if they were pushed out of windows?'

What a shame a ban on assault rocks didn't pass in time to save Abel.
If a wadded bathroom tissue had been the only object at hand, Cain would have found some way to use that to kill his brother.

You are spot-on, #10. One of the most effective defenses against knives are the 26" sticks used in Escrima, Kung Fu, etc. With a set of those you can break a knife wielder's arms and head before he gets the knife anywhere near you. You can make a set out of a broom handle. Another good weapon is the telescoping ASP baton, which incidentally has been outlawed in some states because it is also deadly as an offensive weapon.

#22: Funny, but that's Vladimir Putin's favorite way of disposing of political enemies.... or one-time friends who are no longer so useful. Makes me wonder if he had copies of "All In The Family" smuggled into East Germany (on VHS tape) when he ran the KGB field office there in the 1980s. I can see him now watching and thinking, "Da! That would be a good way to get rid of people. Must make note for future use."

The same sinawali, "Heaven and Earth" movement pattern can be used with bare hands, short sticks, knives, machetes, swords, escrima or even short bo staff, if you practice the foundation movements you can use anything to accentuate it...and using something heavier than rattan builds strength and speed during practice(I use two solid steel rods) THEN you can use a walking stick/cane in one hand, something or nothing in the other, or make the cane in two pieces so both hands wield hardwood(my canes are made of rosewood, and Brazilian cherry, (If you are a frequenter of formal affairs...ebony or ironwood with a bit of gold/silver on top goes well with a Tux ;)
