Soft power, empty hands: Germany’s finance

German finance minister Lars Klingbeil wrapped up his visit to Washington last week. His meeting with U.S. treasury secretary Scott Bessent centered on the EU-US trade deal. A dose of European moralism, of course, wasn’t missing. It was a meeting of political opposites. On one side: Scott Bessent, Wall Street veteran and committed to cutting America’s debt through radical fiscal consolidation, deregulation, tax cuts, and shrinking the role of the state. On the other: Lars Klingbeil, steward of the largest debt program in German history, embracing state intervention as economic salvation. More than just a polite first encounter, this was a friendly but stark ideological clash.

Germany, Britain and France, probably the leading countries in the EU, are on their way to ruin, financial disaster and the loss of their human identity due to their capitulation to the North African and Middle Eastern invasion from which they are now too weak to recover. Mohammed is smiling.

It's hard to imagine Germany with an inferiority complex; impossible with the French. But that does not preclude an actual condition of inferiority. Once it embraced being a dumping ground for the wretched refuse of the teeming third world, they were doomed. I guess Gibbon's 'Decline And Fall of the Roman Empire' was never translated into German.

I wonder how historians will look at the suicide of the Western nations 100 years from now? Will the mission be accomplished, with citizens living in 1984 2.0? Or, will clearer heads prevail, once survival instincts kick in? I honestly don’t know anymore.

Klingbiel -- and the rest of his contemporaries near the levers of power in Germany -- should learn from their forebears who rebuilt the Federal Republic of Germany (i.e. West Germany) after WWII and governed it until ceding too much federal power to the EU and trading in the Deutsche Mark for the Euro. Those Germans were hard-nosed realists working to dig their country out of the ruins left to them by the destruction of Nazism. They were careful about immigration -- though some claimed they let in too many Turks in the early 1960s at a time when the economy was growing far more rapidly than the available labor, they kept their currency hardened so as to avoid repeating the mistakes of the Wiemar Republic (where wheel barrows of Marks were needed to buy a loaf of bread near its end), and they practiced a trade policy called *reciprocity*... and it worked very well for them... and for their trade relationship with America, who was West Germany's largest trade partner in the latter half of the 1980s as Ronaldus Magnus was a full-throated free trader. At the time, a much younger Donald Trump noted that most other countries were practicing mercantilism in response to Reagan's policies of free trade and "ripping us off"... But West Germany didn't rip us off as it made good on its policy and opened West German markets wide to America in response to America being wide open to West Germany. PDJT is doing nothing but practicing West German trade policy, circa the mid-1980s. If Klingbiel knew any of the history of his own country, he would have nothing but praise for this.

Americans, and especially Trump, are not impressed with Europe. Their culture is being destroyed by illegal immigrants, and they have no business sense or governing skills. Since WWII they have allowed themselves to become very weak militarily by leaning on the US and pouring most of their resources into social programs. Now they are becoming even more socialist and authoritarian. They do not, nor should they have, any real influence with the United States.

Since Donald Trump has begun the push to deport illegal aliens, we’ve seen stories about families being broken up, and people losing their homes or being deported without having been arrested for crimes other than illegal entry. The stories are framed sympathetically to wring American hearts, but they don’t change the debate because you can’t run a country based on emotional anecdotal narratives. Still, that’s exactly what Democrats want the country to do. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has sent the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) a request for a treasure trove of documents related to the ongoing federal investigation into the Obama administration’s Russiagate operation, The Federalist has learned. According to a letter to ODNI senior adviser Paul McNamara, which was obtained by The Federalist, the DOJ has requested from ODNI a wide array of documents about the Obama administration’s 2016 and 2017 attempts to frame then-President-elect Donald Trump as an agent of Russia who stole the 2016 election from Hillary Clinton.

House Republicans subpoenaed nearly a dozen former federal officials and politicians — including Bill and Hillary Clinton — as well as records from the Department of Justice on Tuesday amid an expanding probe into the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The officials — including former FBI Directors James Comey and Robert Mueller as well as six ex-US attorneys general — were compelled to testify before the House Oversight Committee. Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) announced the move days after DOJ officials interviewed Epstein’s accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence in a federal prison for conspiring to sexually abuse young girls.

Let’s take a tour of the 13th congressional district in Illinois. It starts in East St. Louis and then moves steadily north. By the time it gets to Springfield, home of Abraham Lincoln, about 90 miles away, it takes a sharp turn to the east, reaching Decatur and finally Champaign, itself about 80 miles away from Springfield. It’s a jagged, narrow strip of territory with no obvious rhyme or reason as it traverses six counties. It’s less a congressional district than a road trip, and bears a resemblance to the original gerrymander, a long, salamander-like state Senate district in Massachusetts in 1812. The only point of the new 13th district lines,

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to order a full military occupation of the Gaza Strip to force Hamas to free the hostages, according to local reports. The expansion of the war would see the military, which already controls about 75% of Gaza, take over the remaining areas and conduct operations where the hostages are believed to be held, the Jerusalem Post reported. The move was reportedly made without the input of the Israeli military’s chief of staff Eyal Zamir — with Netanyahu instructing him to fall in line or resign, according to the internal memo sent out.

At the core of The Atlantic’s unnecessarily long profile on loud Democrat Rep. Jasmine Crockett is the argument that, “when the Republicans go low, the Democrats should meet them there.” As Rachel Jeantel so famously put it, “That’s real retarded, sir.” The notion that Democrats have for too long shown excessive restraint or pitched themselves to voters with a naive intellectualism while being punched in the mouth by brute Republicans is a hysterical myth, one that only persists because the media that helped create it continue to perpetuate it.

In a stunning firsthand account, a whistleblower has exposed how senior intelligence officials under Barack Obama manipulated analysis, silenced dissent, and strong-armed subordinates to produce a politically loaded assessment linking Donald Trump to Russian election interference. According to the whistleblower, senior intelligence officials, including then-DNI James Clapper and CIA Director John Brennan, pressured analysts to endorse conclusions they didn’t agree with and marginalized anyone who raised objections. The now-infamous January 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment, the whistleblower says, was crafted to match a predetermined political narrative: that Russia interfered in the 2016 election specifically to help Donald Trump.

ust got back from Salt Lake, where I took my kids to Wheeler Farm in Murray, Utah. Originally homesteaded in the late 1800s, the 75-acre property was preserved and turned over to Salt Lake County in 1969. It was jarring, in the best way, to see a public space so well-run. Admission is free. Kids walk right up to cows, goats, sheep, and chickens. They climb on old tractors, go on wagon rides (for $3), and race through open fields. After a busy morning, we bought $2 Uncrustables and $1.50 Popsicles from the gift shop and sat for lunch.
