Thanksgiving in North America: From Local
Harvests to National Holiday

Most Americans are familiar with the Pilgrim's Thanksgiving Feast of 1621, but few realize that it was not the first festival of its kind in North America. Long before Europeans set foot in the Americas, native peoples sought to insure a good harvest with dances and rituals such as the Green Corn Dance of the Cherokees. The first Thanksgiving service known to be held by Europeans in North America occurred on May 27, 1578, in Newfoundland, although earlier Church-type services were probably held by Spaniards in La Florida.

Typical leftist Smithsonian tripe.. The story is filled with mishmash, such as, "were probably," and, "are thought to have," which, for TRUE historians, is anathema to ever put in writing. This is more editing of American history by leftists who hate America's history.

Earlier than that, the insurance of a good harvest was blood sacrifice, cutting the hearts out of enemies or slaves and letting the blood symbolically fertilize the ground. We have progressed quite far to chopping off the heads of Turkeys.

I agree with you, poster #1. The biggest question which comes to mind whenever I see tripe like this is will we ever expunge the leftist lies from American History? Just how many years back must one search to find any history books which are akin to the history many of us grew up with? I know many embellishments were interwoven into our history, but the leftist liars really take the cake. On a more pleasant note, I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving in the true tradition of God, family, friends, and country.

If speculation is all that is required I speculate that The Neanderthals had their own Harvest Celebration where they roasted Wooly Mammoths on a stick. After the big meal they went into their caves and painted on the walls displaying far more artistic talent than Hunter Bidet.

There is an old history Book that claims a record from the earliest times. Actually, the Book claims to have been written by God! No man was around at the very beginning, so we just have to take God's Word for it. Although, strangest thing, all study that can be done, eventually bears out all the facts in the Book. One place in the Book says that every good and perfect gift comes down from God. Of course, we don't have to thank Him for it, but it kinda makes sense, doesn't it?

The historic South Carolina city of Charleston has elected its first Republican mayor since the Reconstruction Era. William Cogswell, formerly a Republican state lawmaker, defeated incumbent Democratic Mayor John Tecklenburg by about 2 percentage points in Tuesday’s runoff, according to the South Carolina Election Commission. Results posted online by the commission showed a 569-vote margin separating the the two candidates. Cogswell, 48, had secured the most votes in the Nov. 7 general election but not a majority, meaning that he and Tecklenburg headed to Tuesday’s runoff.

Anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders said Thursday that he is ready to join the next Dutch coalition government after he surged to a huge election victory that marked a stunning lurch to the far right for a nation once famed as a beacon of tolerance. The result is sending shockwaves through Europe, where extremist nationalist ideology is putting pressure on democracies that now face the possibility of having to deal with the first far-right prime minister of the Netherlands. “It is going to happen that the PVV is in the next Cabinet,” Wilders said, using the Dutch abbreviation for his Party for Freedom.

In 1949, the trailblazing anti-racist musical “South Pacific”––created by composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II––debuted on Broadway to wild critical acclaim, running for over five years in nearly 2,000 performances. A particularly powerful and influential song from the musical, “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught,” carried the message that hatred does not arise spontaneously in the human species, but rather is inculcated––taught, sermonized, infused––by parents, teachers, coaches, political figures or other impassioned haters. Here are the still-relevant lyrics:

A somber-looking Donald Trump led his family and dozens of other people in mourning his sister, retired Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, at her Upper East Side funeral Friday. The ex-president, his wife, Melania, and his children Don Jr., Eric and Ivanka were seen waiting on the sidewalk in front of St. Ignatius of Loyola Church on Park Avenue around East 84th Street in Manhattan to greet the black Cadillac hearse carrying the coffin of the Queens native and former no-nonsense federal judge and assistant US attorney, who died Nov. 13 at age 86. A Michigan judge on Tuesday dismissed an effort to keep former President Donald Trump off the state’s ballot in 2024. The judge said that under Michigan law, the secretary of state does not have the authority to intervene in a primary election if the party chooses to list a candidate who would not qualify for the office. “The ultimate decision is made by the respective political party, with the consent of the listed candidate,” the judge wrote. The decision comes after a group of Michigan voters in September filed a legal challenge to Trump’s candidacy,

In the post-World War II era, Democrats were labeled as the political party that represented average Americans. Democrats were credited with fighting for the rights of the working-class, minorities, women, and the disadvantaged. In contrast, the Republicans were supposedly the party of the country club elitists, the Chamber of Commerce, and the business tycoons looking to garner favors from the government. These generalizations may have resembled the truth through the years of Republican presidential nominees such as George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, George W. Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney. However, in the last eight years, since Donald Trump became the leading Republican, the political parties have switched roles. Today,

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators are expected to flood the National Mall in Washington, DC, on Tuesday in one of the largest pro-Israel protests since the Israel-Hamas war began five weeks ago. The “March for Israel” — organized by the Jewish Federations of North America and Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations — is billed as an opportunity for “Americans from all walks of life” to condemn rising antisemitism across the nation and to demand that Hamas finally release the hundreds of Israeli hostages it is hiding in Gaza. “Israel must eliminate the terrorist threat on its border and restore safety and security to its people.

The Nation is honoring this year’s Thanksgiving by featuring a debate over whether America should keep celebrating the national holiday or not. One side is claiming it is “steeped in colonialism, violence, and misrepresentation” and needs to be “decolonized,” while the other goes further, describing Thanksgiving as a “lie” that should be completely abolished and replaced with a “Truthsgiving,” where Americans can “give thanks by… giving land back.” The essay, titled “Should America Keep Celebrating Thanksgiving?” and published in the left-wing magazine’s latest issue, details the positions of Lakota Chef Sean Sherman,

Since the first Thanksgiving on Plymouth Rock and its subsequent establishment as a day of thanks on Oct. 3, 1789, the recipient of that thanks on behalf of the United States of America has always been God. But in keeping with the destruction of everything good and virtuous in this nation, this year, God has been removed as the recipient of thanks on Thanksgiving. On Wednesday, President Biden released his Thanksgiving proclamation for 2023. For the first time in American history, the proclamation completely omitted any reference to God or faith.
