If Senate Democrats plan to subpoena conservative judicial activists as part of a Supreme Court ethics investigation, Republicans say they must go after liberal advocates the same way.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) has sought to authorize subpoenas for influential conservative judicial activist Leonard Leo and GOP megadonor Harlan Crow, defending the subpoenas as necessary after the pair's “defensive, dismissive refusals” to cooperate with a congressional investigation. Now, Republicans have proposed more than 150 additional subpoenas to broaden an investigation they say is one-sided against conservative justices on the high court.

Over the weekend, Elon Musk said he plans to file a “thermonuclear lawsuit” against Media Matters for America, a left-wing propaganda shop whose sole reason for existing is to churn out deceptive, fake studies designed to pressure large firms to pull advertising from media outlets and platforms that don’t toe the leftist line.
That’s precisely what Media Matters did last week when it released a bogus “report” alleging that X, formerly Twitter, runs ads for Apple, Bravo, IBM, Oracle, and Xfinity next to “pro-Nazi content.” Sure enough, after this report was published Thursday, Apple, IBM, and a bunch of other companies fell for the scam

The ongoing campaign by progressive activists to deny former President Trump a place on state ballots received yet another serious setback late Friday. After a weeklong bench trial, Denver District Court Judge Sarah Wallace issued a 102-page opinion in Anderson v. Griswold concluding that “Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment does not apply to Trump.” She ordered Colorado’s Secretary of State Jena Griswold to place his name on Colorado’s presidential primary ballot. This is the fourth state in three weeks to reject efforts to keep Trump off their ballots.

The White House is dismissing the idea President Joe Biden undermined his own diplomacy with Chinese President Xi Jinping by defending his earlier description of him as a dictator.
"The president comes away from the meeting yesterday feeling very good about the content of the discussions over the course of four hours and the progress that we were able to make on some very significant fronts," national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters Thursday.Kirby cited the resumption of military-to-military communication as one achievement, in addition to commitments to counter fentanyl production and exportation through law enforcement and to cooperate on artificial intelligence.

It’s not exactly breaking news that Joe Biden is historically unpopular, which is why a lot of Democrats from Manhattan to Malibu and everywhere in between just want him to wave goodbye and go home.
So it’s no big shock that the recent New York Times-Siena College poll has Donald Trump beating Biden in five of six key battleground states. Biden’s poll numbers are underwater for a whole bunch of reasons — inflation, the chaos on our southern border, crime, those lingering questions about the president’s frailty, both physical and mental. And then there’s Sen. Joe Manchin, who may join Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cornel West and Jill Stein

The commentariat has made much of recent surveys showing Trump ahead of Biden in swing states that probably will decide the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. A Bloomberg/MorningConsult poll released Friday, for example, shows Trump with modest leads among registered voters in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Emerson also released a survey on Friday indicating that Trump enjoys leads in the same states. The one that created the most buzz was a New York Times/Siena poll showing Trump ahead by even larger margins in Arizona (+5), Georgia (+6), Michigan (+5), Nevada (+10), and Pennsylvania (+4).

In the first major escalation of the House Oversight Committee's investigation into Biden family corruption, Hunter Biden and James Biden have been subpoenaed along with Rob Walker, a former business associate of the president's son.Rep. James Comer first hinted at the move on Sunday, suggesting that a slate of subpoenas would be on the way. Several others, including James Biden's wife, have also been requested to come in for transcribed interviews. It seems unlikely most would comply voluntarily.(Snip)Negotiations will commence in short order to figure out exactly when those subpoenaed will have to appear. It's very likely that all interviews will happen behind closed doors

In 2005, Palestinian Arabs were given autonomy over the Gaza Strip for the first time in their history. To make it happen, the Israeli government forcibly removed thousands of Israelis from the area. Without military protection, Jews would be murdered by Palestinians, who prefer their land Judenfrei.
As Jews were being evicted from their homes, some began to dismantle the farms and hothouses they’d built, reluctant to hand over years of hard work. In the name of peace, however, American Jewish donors purchased the 3,000 remaining greenhouses that stood over 1,000 acres for $14 million and gave it to the Palestinian Authority, gratis.

Special counsel David Weiss, who has run a more than five-year federal investigation into first son Hunter Biden, appeared Tuesday before the House Judiciary Committee to answer questions about the probe.
“Special Counsel Weiss is appearing voluntarily to testify before the House Judiciary Committee about the scope of his authority,” Weiss spokesman Wyn Hornbuckle said in a statement.
“Mr. Weiss is prepared to take this unprecedented step of testifying before the conclusion of his investigation to make clear that he’s had and continues to have full authority over his investigation and to bring charges in any jurisdiction.

Political motives lie not far beneath the surface of everything Congress does. That is appropriate in a democracy. But we expect the House, and especially the Senate, to retain at least some pretense of exercising its powers in the public interest. Instead, the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee are abusing its investigatory powers simply to campaign against Leonard Leo and Harlan Crow.
Dick Durbin, Sheldon Whitehouse, and their committee will reportedly vote within the next two weeks to subpoena Leo and Crow, as well as Robin Arkley II, who is targeted over a fishing trip with Justice Samuel Alito 15 years ago.

Paul has done an excellent job covering President Biden’s double-game of trotting out ostensibly pro-Israel positions for public consumption while privately moving to scuttle Israel and advance the interests of Hamas (and hence Iran). But tonight Joe, with the indiscipline that comes with his advanced age, and without a teleprompter to keep him on his (public) message, said it out loud. As reported by CBS:
President Joe Biden said he thought there should be a humanitarian "pause" in the Israel-Hamas war, after his campaign speech Wednesday evening was interrupted by a protester calling for a cease-fire.
"I think we need a pause," Biden said.

President Biden is facing growing concerns among independent voters as polling shows lackluster approval from a key group in deciding who wins the White House.
A Gallup poll released last week shows Biden’s approval rating among independents fell 4 points in the past month to 35 percent. The report noted the president’s approval has been “generally weak” with that group since July 2021 — after he logged 61 percent approval from independents at the start of his term.“The independent vote just becomes more and more important in every cycle. And it can really make a margin,” said Democratic strategist Jon Reinish.
