CVS pulls popular over-the-counter cold
medicines from store shelves TODAY after
FDA said they didn't work

CVS began pulling popular over the counter cough and cold products from its shelves today because they don't work. The pharmacy chain is removing oral meds that contain phenylephrine as their only active ingredient, which was shown to be no better than placebo at treating a stuffy nose. The drugs are taken by millions of Americans and include brands like Benadryl Allergy Plus Congestion, Sudafed PE, and Tylenol Cold and Flu and Severe Day & Night. It comes weeks after a panel of advisers to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ruled phenylephrine 'is not effective' at standard or even high doses when taken in pill or liquid form.

Comments:

These products have been around for decades and I don't know if they work or not. But suddenly the FDA needs something to. The FDA wouldn't lie!

#1, it is worth noting that Sudafed PE was introduced when regulations preventing regular Sudafed (with pseudoephedrine) from being sold off of the shelf. Regular Sudafed (and its generic competitors) is a very effective decongestant. Sudafed PE is less effective. That is personal experience.

Right, #6. Big pharma can't sell outrageously expensive perscription drugs for allergies and sinus headaches if there is a cheap over-the-counter alternative that is nearly as effective. Nobody believes the FDA or the CDC anymore.

Decongestants have never been effective for cold treatment, and often have anxiety and cardiovascular side effects on anxiety, blood pressure and heart rate. Benadryl may cause sedation, fatigue and close off your prostate in men. Over counter Claritin etc work as well for allergies. Still, people with a cold want to use “something” to help pass time until their body cures the cold. Honey and vinegar in moderation can’t hurt.

Like other posters here suggest, this seems fishy. Either someone is being bought off, or perhaps those originally bought off have retired. Or maybe Pfizer is coming out with a new $1,400 treatment and is taking out the competition. All involved have zero credibility in the wake of Covid.

Diphenylhydramine is my antihistamine of choice. And NO it is not a "cold treatment", it is for a stuffed up nose caused by allergies, and works well for me. Thankfully, it is dirt cheap and a few years ago Walmart had 100 pill bottles on sale for $8 each. I bought about four, IIRC. That will likely last me the rest of my life. Another middle finger to FDA. I wouldn't trust them to approve dihydrogen oxide as safe for human consumption. They'd certainly get it wrong and ban it.

The study that this conclusion was based on was a set of eight unpublished trials between two differenct doses of phenylephrine, 10mg and 25mg. NAR is nasal airway resistance (stuffiness). Here's the study statement. Results: Based on 8 unpublished studies that included 138 patients, phenylephrine 10 mg did not affect NAR more than placebo; the mean maximal difference in relative change from baseline between phenylephrine and placebo was 10.1% (95% CI -3.8% to 23.9%). Eight unpublished studies on phenylephrine 25 mg showed a significant reduction of maximal NAR compared with placebo of 27.6% (95% CI 17.5% to 37.7%). Two things. One is the study only included 138 patients which is a ridiculously underpowered trial for something like stuffy nose. Second, it concluded that the 25mg dose showed significant reduction in NAR. So, the study contradicts the actions of the FDA. I can't be sure but I think this whole thing is about the need for pharmacies to look up phenylephrine because smurfs can buy large quantities and cook methamphetamine from it.

Bring back old school Nyquil!! "Original NyQuil® formula had 5 main ingredients: Tylenol® (acetaminophen) for his fever, headache, and body aches, dextromethorphan for his cough, doxylamine, an antihistamine that helped relieve his runny nose, sneezing, and helped him sleep, pseudoephedrine as an effective decongestant for his stuffy nose and sinus pressure, and 25% alcohol, which encouraged his sleep." And it worked!! Green Death flavor too.

I've had chronic sinusitis for 50+ years, and Pseudoephedrine, which I usually get in Sudafed 12 hour form, has been very good at un-stuffing my nose. Generic substitutes have proven to be a little less effective. And the phenylephrine versions, even of the brand name, consistently had no effect. The items CVS is removing should have been spurned by customers years ago for their ineffectiveness.

phenylephrine 10 works great for me to clear my sinuses before I go to bed so I don't breath through my mouth or swallow drainage causing me tooth problems. When they started locking up the pseudoephedrine, I bought a box of each and compared them for the benefits for me. The pseudoephedrine was as useful as teats on a boar hog. I am sure the reason they are removing the phenylephrine has a lot more to with money in their pockets than usefulness, or not, of the medicines.

To be clear - it's not the original Sudafed formula that they're saying doesn't work. It's the substitute they tried to get us to use when they restricted original Sudafed. They're correct - the substitute is ineffective. Now they need to fix the original Sudafed restriction - a family is unable to obtain enough to use when they need it! This was in California, not sure if it's different elsewhere. Ridiculous!

FDA should prohibit Covid mRNA vaccines because they contain double stranded DNA with SV40 virus sequences. These vaccines give myocarditis, pericarditis and sudden death in young men and menstrual problems in women. So there’s that.

Thousands gathered in Istanbul on Saturday for what was touted as the “Great Palestine Meeting.” The event was a pro-Palestine rally aimed at condemning Israel’s recent military actions in Gaza, where Hamas headquarters are located. Hamas terrorists were responsible for a deadly attack that claimed the lives of 1,400 Jews in southern Israel. One must ask the question: What did people expect Israel to do in response? Not retaliate? When an entity like Hamas, designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, and Israel, engages in violent acts aimed at killing civilians, it is not only Israel’s right but also its obligation to defend its citizens.

The project began in 2021 and is ongoing, but the initial analysis determined samples to contain clayey and marine materials and seafood. According to the researchers, these results mean human activity was present on the boat-shaped mound between 5500 and 3000 BC.
