An IRS special agent was shot and killed during a training exercise on a Phoenix gun range by another agent Thursday, sparking an investigation by the FBI. ABC 15 News broke the story that the shooting and death had occurred outside of Anthem on a range used by multiple law enforcement agencies.
FBI officials released a statement on Thursday evening confirming the death of the agent but did not share further details about what exactly happened on the range.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) also issued a statement that it was investigating a “shooting incident” at the Federal Correctional Institutional (FCI) Phoenix firing range Thursday afternoon

Why do IRS agents have guns?
Aren't they supposed to be accountants with green eye shades? What a disgusting story!

"during a routine training exercise "...
there is NOTHING "routine" about any "excercise" where a participant gets shot and Killed....to have it happen...ever... means several people ignored their training.

So weapons, ammo, combat training ... What exactly are they training FOR? I'm betting they aren't going to be loosed on the vast network of underground black market tax scofflaws. Those folks shoot back.

There hasn't been a "Line of Duty" IRS agent death in 11 years, that one was a heart attack. 2 were hit by cars, this is the 1st shooting death, of ANY kind....ever.
Only 5 IRS line of duty deaths...Ever.https://www.odmp.org/agency/3962-united-states-department-of-the-treasury-internal-revenue-service-criminal-investigation-us-government
Even the FBI "Wall of martyrs" page, is mostly "Air pollution effects from exposure after 9/11", and training accidents. Most recently an agent that ruptured his Achilles tendon during training, but died on the operating room table during the "Routine Repair". Another agent returning from training crashed his personal plane on the way home.

Ask all the questions you like - the detailed facts will never come out. A young public servant was killed during live-fire training. The worst part? I no longer care.

FTA —- An IRS special agent was shot and killed during a training exercise on a Phoenix gun range by another agent Thursday, sparking an investigation by the FBI.
I saw no explicit statement in the article that the individual who fired the fatal shot was an IRS agent.

Range safety is evidently not a concern at the Correctional Facility Range. Where was the Range Master? How many IRS Agents were active on the range at one time? Videos of armed IRS Agent training show less than stellar safety measures. Could this be a real life gang that couldn't shoot straight.

While it is a matter of debate whether accounting geeks should be armed, this type of incident could happen to anybody who does not take firearms safety and training seriously. There was an incident a while back where a SEAL shot the man in front of him while engaged in dangerous live fire exercises in a high-pressure room to room setting. Guns are serious business, not a novelty for amateurs.

the responsibility of Range Commander is to make sure the "Line is Safe" at all times and something like happening definitely shows a lack of experience and leadership and
not to belabor a point but .... why do IRS "special agents" need a weapon of any kind? they have the greatest intimidation factor just by announcing their presence and saying "I'm from the IRS", that would be enough to make an FBI Special Agent soil his or hers BVD's

If, back in the 1960-70's, this story got told at a party, it would probably elicit applause. There wasn't much love for the IRS back then.
