Hurricane Hilary reached Category 4 status on Friday morning, and the National Hurricane Center issued its first-ever tropical storm watch for Southern California, as the entire southwestern region braces for heavy rains, high surf, and flash flooding.
Update: The tropical storm watch was extended to all of Los Angeles County, and much of Ventura County, as of 3 p.m. PST Friday. [Tweet]
The storm, off the west coast of Mexico and moving northwards as of midday Friday, has maximum sustained winds of 145 miles per hour. Hurricane watches have been issued for Baja California, and a tropical storm watch for San Diego and Orange counties.

This is one of the few times I'm sorry to be totally banned from facebook and social media...one of my groups they took down and blocked me from was liveaboard sailing/cruising folks, many of whom spend this season on the Sea of Cortez, between Baja and the Mexican Mainland, it would be a scary place to be right now, shallow water makes for BIG waves, its a narrow body of water with hardly ANY shore facilities and a verry rocky inhospitable shoreline with nowhere to seek any shelter of any kind.

There could be a lot of roads washed out, power outages, and flooding in normally bone-dry areas. I wonder if Gov. Grecian Formula has a game plan in place - besides preening in the mirror?

Being a resident of Oregon, I was rather surprised to find out the trajectory of the storm has the tail end of it hitting Oregon sometime on Tuesday with 45mph winds. That isn't too bad, been through those before. But if it was named anything BUT Hilary, just saying.

Well, last winter Los Angeles was under a blizzard watch, now a hurricane. Hmm, we're right in style.

Hurricane Hillary hit a long time ago..... about the time she got into the White House. Will our country ever recover from the damage?

Might the storm blow a few homeless encampments off a few sidewalks? By the time it gets there it won't be a hurricane, but maybe enough to clear some lean-to shelters, tents, and fully furnished refrigerator boxes from in front of people's homes and businesses.

This will be the first hurricane ever where the winds won’t howl, they’ll cackle.

This is Not the first tropical storm to hit California.
1In late 1982 I was on San Clemente Island when both the island and Southern California were hit by a tropical storm with gusts over 100 MPH. It lasted 4 days
Reporters lie about easily researched facts all the time.

And predicted to lose power rapidly in the next couple of days as it moves over the cold Japan current waters, as I said yesterday or the day before.
Should make landfall in California as a tropical storm, and bring a bunch of rain, and some fairly good winds.
As in all desert country, flash flooding is common with any good rainstorm.

It's biblical and California deserves it. There is no Noah there either.

I'm in the bullseye and totally looking forward to the torrential rain. We haven't had a drop of rain in months.
I suspect this is hype and in any case, the bluest areas of San Diego are going to get the flooding like they always do. Mission Valley, Imperial Beach, Encinitas et al, pure blue voting patterns. Not my problem. Coronado and Oceanside where the military live might get flooded too, and that's different, we should help Coronado and Oceanside if they need it. I hope they prepared this time.
