A Catholic church narrowly escaped destruction from the wildfires which raged across the Hawaiian island of Maui this week, with one online influencer saying it has become a "symbol of hope" for local residents. Video and photos posted on social media show the historic Maria Lanakila church, which was founded in 1846, apparently unscathed despite surrounding buildings and vegetation having been incinerated. The church is located in the town of Lahaina, which was largely wiped out by the fire with more than 1,700 buildings reported burned. On Friday authorities confirmed the death toll on Maui had risen to 80, with

No damage to the church as everything around it burned to the ground.

Isn't it about time to move some of the cruise ship into the harbor to help some of the folks that have lost homes? These people need help now not after the crooked politicians have scooped all the money destined to help the victims.

Rather than being a “symbol of hope”, it should be a symbol of FAITH.

Practically, the 1873 church was built of stone and it appears the rectory was of the same material. I imagine also the school. The buildings appear to be surrounded by a green grass lawn and set aside on a corner lot. Their physical attributes and location seem to be the outwardly attributes of survival. Yet, my Catholic heart takes hope in God's mercy that Maria Lanakila, Our Lady of Victory, has been prepared for this day so that her buildings would be there to care for the people of Lahaina in the hour of their greatest need. When everyone in town was building in wood, only the Catholics were building in stone. Maria Lanakila - Pray for the people of Lahaina.

Not saying it's not God's work, but a stone building surrounded by wide grassy lawn, kept short....dramatically lower risk. Can't see the roofing material but tile or metal are common on this sort of building. God helps those who help themselves. Retreating to the church would have been a good strategy, but how many believers were there among the Maui folks? I get the sense that aetheist econutballs would have been a large part of the local population. But that is just judging from stereotypical tourist towns that I have visited in other places. Posters have described Lahaina buildings as "wooden shacks built one on top of another". Having never been there, I don't know personally, but, if true, that sounds like the standard of building in a lot of small towns and cities in the 1800s, and in those days whole towns burning down, or cities, like San Fran, were common. Stone or brick with fire break spaces between buildings makes a big difference.

#5~ “... surprised that God likes any of us very much these days.” / God’s love knows no bounds, however, there comes a time of discipline be it in our personal lives, national, or worldwide as we await Jesus’ Second Coming. No one can speak for God except His chosen prophets, but people of faith share the same discernment in that well-expressed statement. It stands to reason there may well be disappointment, sorrowfulness and perhaps even annoyance in some measure due to diminished church attendance, churches having gone woke, atheism, agnosticism, apathy, blasphemy and, most certainly, apostasy. To consider the sinfulness of the world today makes wondering whether it exceeds the sinfulness in Noah’s time and Sodom and Gomorrah combined. Yet, in God’s loving grace, REPENTANT sinners of ALL Judeo-Christian denominations have redemption through the blood of Jesus shed on Calvary’s cross—God forgives for Jesus’ sake.

Re a rescue ship I don’t believe that Maui has a deep water harbor. Someone mentioned that materials for rebuilding would have to be shipped to Honolulu and than travel by barge to Maui. Meanwhile they are homeless and running out of food. Must drink only bottled water. Boiling insufficient.

When Hawaii officials released a report last year ranking the natural disasters most likely to threaten state residents, tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic hazards featured prominently. Near the bottom of a color-coded chart, the state emergency management agency described the risk of wildfires to human life with a single word: “low.” A year and a half later, the catastrophic fires that engulfed Maui and the historic town of Lahaina this week have already become the state’s deadliest natural disaster in more than six decades, with a fatality count of at least 93. A pair of recent reports on the state of homelessness in Los Angeles seemed to send mixed signals about how the effort to bring people in from the streets is going. The first came was an announcement from Mayor Karen Bass, who said last month that her administration has helped shelter 14,381 unhoused people, largely by focusing on the encampments that have become symbols of this dismaying problem. This represents a major step forward in addressing homelessness, given that Bass pledged to find housing – permanent or interim – for 17,000 people in her first year. So 14,000 in the
