Kevin McCarthy Gives 4 More Concessions
Before Thursday's Speakership Vote

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) gave the 20 conservative holdouts four more concessions before Thursday’s continued speakership vote. The concessions, negotiated Wednesday night between McCarthy and his critics, are meant to peal several members away from the group of 20 holdouts. McCarthy needs 16 lawmakers to break ranks with the so-called “rebels.” The concessions McCarthy made are significant. Axios and Politico Playbook reported: One member motion threshold needed to force a vote ousting a speaker, instead of five. More House Freedom Caucus members on the House Rules Committee (two seats). Pledges to hold votes

McCarthy is unable to see the obvious, and these 2 days have shown that he is not the right person to be Speaker, and not the person that can unify the Republican House.

These 20 RINOs, who have no legislative accomplishments whatsoever, have made the Republican Party into a laughingstock, not just among the left, but among independents. You know independents, the people you actually need to persuade in order to defeat the Democrats. It would serve them right if McCarthy moved to the left to pick up a handful of Democratic votes and get to 218 that way. McCarthy is not perfect but he was undeniably instrumental in helping the GOP flip the House in 2010 and 2022, and this is the tanks he gets. I am beginning to understand why former conservative friends of mine became Democrats.

Two mor3 concessions left to agree to. 1) agree to make available to the public ALL J6 committee documents ans 2) launch comprehensive investigations into the weaponization of the fbi, doj, irs ,cia, cdc, and the SCOTUS and agree to refer persons responsible for and carried out the weaponization.

The 20 holdouts know what they want and seem to be doing a good job of squeezing McCarthy in the absence of an electable alternative. However this shakes down we ought to be prepared to trust their judgement.

I'm kind of in the middle on this one. We need to get this done to get on with the business of the nation and the investigations. Any deal with the Democrats will end the latter real fast. I fault McCarthy for either not trying or failing to get McConnell to kill that Omnibus bill and only pass a short-term measure. I really place the blame for the failure to have a real "red wave" election on McConnell and his not-too-subtle pot shots at GOP candidates. In many cases, he financed their opponents. But if McCarthy can be held to his promises, he did a lot of work to elect many of the Republicans who led us to the majority in the House. And Nasty Nancy ruled it with an iron fist with a similar majority.

@#3 - What's the hurry? The world will not come to an end if a Speaker is not chosen for a few weeks. Better to get it right than rush into hiring a swamp creature such as McCarthy to run the show. The GOP holdouts know McCarthy will compromise with the Dems and get nothing in return. Didn't we just see Congress a week ago ram through another 1.7 trillion dollar bill that nobody read and very few even knew what was in it? Why does everything in DC have to be done immediately and in the dark of night? I'd be fine if Congress did nothing for the next two years.

IMO, "pledges" from McCarthy are worthless. He is a creature of the swamp and will promise anything to get the power. As soon as he gets it he will give these Republicans the same treatment the Democrats gave Joe Manchin. Had he done this before the first vote or immediately after he might have had more credibility, but now, after failing six times, he reeks of desperation. He should withdraw, but won't, because it's not about the good of the Party, not about the good of the country, it is, IMO, all about him.

I'm not going to bother digging into your posting history but if you believe standing tall against a Uniparty establishment GOP do nothing like McCarthy makes them RINOs then being Republican means Uniparty. I hope they continue to hold the line until McCarthy gives up and steps aside. He's bad for conservatives and worse for the country. There is absolutely nothing shameful about standing up for solid conservative principles. To do otherwise is the shameful act because "oh it looks bad on Twitter and the media is making fun of us! The hold outs that many are posting nasty comments about are doing exactly what our representatives should do. The are making sure that the power and money that the speaker has is out in the open. Many great candidatees were denied funds because Kevin choose to do so. McCarthy is not and has never been an honest representive of the people who thought they were electing a Republican. He and Paul Ryan worked hand in hand against President Trump. Too many in congress like the money and power and do not do their job. The hold outs will be punished by these go alongs by not being given committee positions etc. Seems like many posters do not really understand what these brave people are doing.

Republican Kevin McCarthy has been elected as the new US Speaker after winning the 15th vote following chaotic scenes in Congress. Mr McCarthy's party had taken control of the House – the US lower chamber – following the midterm elections in the autumn, with a slim 222-212 majority. Usually, election of the Speaker follows seamlessly, as a formality, with the leader of the largest party a shoo-in for the job. However, recent splits in the Republican party meant that did not happen until the 15th round of voting. In the 14th ballot, Mr McCarthy received 216 votes - one shy of the number needed for a victory - as a small faction

You remember this one. Last April, Florida put an end to the special status originally granted to Disney World back in 1967. The whole battle began after Disney decided to criticize the “Parental Rights in Education” bill which DeSantis had signed in March. Here’s a bit of background on the deal that was repealed. Since 1967, Disney has received tax and regulation exemptions for an area known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District. The exemption in effect allows Disney to govern itself on Disney World grounds, including having its own fire department and board of supervisors, as well as its ability to oversee land and environmental regulations.
