Tom Nichols: Never Trump really meant
never Republican

Original Article

Tom Nichols has a piece at the Atlantic today explaining why Never Trump didn’t really mean he’d never vote for Trump, it actually meant he’d never vote for Trumpism and that now includes all of the Republican Party. In one of the most appalling appropriations of a political banner in years—or at least since Trump decided in 2012, after years of changing party registrations, finally to settle on calling himself a Republican—some of the conservatives hoping to salvage the GOP’s fortune after the 2022 midterms are trying to seize and redefine the term Never Trump to mean a rejection of “only Trump, and no other Republicans who are like him.”

So, how did we get into the mess we are in? Both dems and repubs have done this to us. The dems stand for world communism, and the repubs stand for global corporate interests. Two sides of the same coin. Trump is a warrior for the liberty and prosperity of the American people. He gets my vote for free. All other candidates must pay me $20,000 cash for my support. Cynism or just reality?

This is a tedious article presenting nuanced, competing definitions of "Never Trumpism." Bottom line takeaway: Today Never Trump is actually Never MAGA, Never Reagan, Never Conservatism, and Never America First. And never ever ever again electing a Republican party to majority anywhere of consequence in this country. Republicans are to play the role of foil to woke power brokers who are to run our government in perpetuity from now on. Dems are the Harlem Globetrotters who can't lose and repubs are the Washington Generals who make a "game" possible. This is the consequence, intended or not, of Never Trumpism. Congratulations.

I was not a fan of Donald Trump in 2016 - I had my preferences. With that said, I appreciate everything he has done but some of the people choices he made were head-scratching. I am not a "Never Trumper" but when he started bashing Ron DeSantis, it was beyond head-scratching and more mind boggling. Don't get that part of his personality. I will vote for Donald Trump but I'm having a difficult time convincing myself for a one-term, old-as-Joe-Biden person. My personal observation of government and leaders is we have a lot of "infantile" adults governing us. Government people are paid with our earnings and what do we get out of that? Infantile adults that act like babies and can't lead worth a darn. . .

What is Trumpism than Reaganism redeux? Remember that three-legged stool of smaller government, low taxes and a strong national defense? Reaganism has been at the heart of the Republican party since 1980, at least. However, the formula, particularly "smaller government", has not been followed. It wasn't followed under Reagan, either. Since 1980 Federal government employment retreated under one President...named Obama. Speaking for myself, I'll support FPDT when he earns that support. Today, he's not there. This recent nonsense with (Kan)Ye and Fuentes is just another example of his political blindness. I know his next term will be even more dramatic than his last. The UNIPARTY has a new stockpile of kitchen sinks to throw his direction. And I wouldn't rule out another "impeachment" even with a GOPe House majority. And where does that leave the nation? The closest parallel is Teddy Roosevelt in 1912, running his Bullmoose Party to defeat Taft, which led to Woodrow Wilson. Not far behind was Ross Perot's run to punish Bush 43 that led to Bill Clinton and to today's highly corrupt Arkansas-style government. The cultists will look upon any disagreement with disdain. And the truth is that they had better have a Plan B because the UNIPARTY will not allow Napoleon back from Elbe this time. One hopes that's not to sit out '24 to teach the nation a lesson with President Newsome. Didn't "real conservatives" do that with Obama?

The actual article doesn't mention Reagan, except in the comments following the article and in above Replies. Equating Trumpism to Reganism is so incredibly false that the very statement cannot be taken at face value, unless all one knew about Reagan and Trump came strictly from the late 20th - early 21st century MSM. Smaller government is not simply a tally of federal office square footage in DC or the federally employed rears-in-seats in DC and throughout the country. Reagan made it a point to roll back the Regulatory State, which he largely controlled as president, reducing its footprint on the lives of normal Americans and on the businesses that employ Americans. Because Reagan knew that getting his agenda-supporting policies in place required using the mostly liberal media of the time to get his conservative message out to the populace, working with his party in Congress to get legislation passed, and co-opting, to the extent feasible, conservative (Blue Dog) democrats, who actually still existed in the late 1970s - early 1980s. Reagan used humor in getting his consistently conservative world-view out, instead of nastiness in dealing with a media that had greater influence on Americans than does the more tarnished media today. By the time Reagan left office, our taxes had been substantially reduced, inflation tamed, and revenue into the treasury was up. More importantly, conservatism was largely embraced by college students of the time and to a lesser extent, by Hollywood. Our military was at its strongest, with ever-increasing war fighting capability, along with an actively re-building Navy capable of projecting our war fighting capability over most of the globe. That did not make Reagan an economic "globalist," as some have suggested. The second "A" in MAGA, standing for making America great "Again," implies a time period when America was great, a time to which a return is desired and envisioned. That time, the "A" in MAGA may well be the political, economic, and societal conditions of the mid-to-late 1980s. I've never heard anything different or more compelling, regarding the When and What of what "Again" is intended to convey. Without a definition, MAGA is essentially political jingoism, like the '70s bumper sticker, "My Country - Love it off leave it," its meaning left to the eye of the beholder, impossible for a nation to know when/if they are "there" yet.

#18 Ronal Reagan was my 1st vote for President. I didn't learn about him later. Reagan served with a hostile Congress headed by Tip O'Neal and the phrase "Dead On Arrival." Meaning every single policy initiative. Regan got his tax policy, regulation reduction, and military beef, and he gave up fiscal discipline and immigration "compromise" on which both parties simply lied to his face. His press was as hostile as they could muster at that time with Sam Donaldson screaming gotcha question from the WH lawn. But also honest brokers (Liberals) like Tim Russert, which Do Not Exist Today, plus Conservative giants like Buckley and Limbaugh. There were no tech oligarchs broadcasting lies and hoaxes about Reagan via ethernet and unplugging the mic on any response. Outside of a reality based immigration agenda, there is Not One jot of policy difference between Ronald Reagan and Donald J Trump, Not One. They hate Trump for his Policies. For his Policies. Not for his personality, bc he was never hated before and his personality didn't change. And if you'd ask em they'd tell you: they hate Reagan even more. AFTER Reagan came OBAMMA. Whose every effort was to "manage the decline" of the USA. THAT is what President Trump defeated with Make America Great Again.

Midterm election turnout among black voters appears to be 25 percent lower than white turnout, marking the lowest share of the black electorate since 2006, a New York Times analysis revealed Wednesday. The low turnout of black voters is a strong indicator Democrats could be losing a key portion of their intersection coalition long heralded by members of the left, such as election denier House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who has claimed the strategy a “gorgeous mosaic” and “not a cult.” Conclusive numbers have not yet been completely compiled from all 50 states, but an early snapshot of voter data suggests black voter turnout was well below the national average
