Virginia voters on Tuesday approved a redistricting referendum that will allow the state legislature to redraw its congressional maps outside the normal cycle in a manner expected to favor Democrats.
The Associated Press called the contest in favor of the yes campaign just before 9:00 p.m., with 84% of precincts reporting. As of press time, "yes" stood at just over 50% of the vote.
The state currently has six Democratic members of Congress and five Republicans. The planned Democratic map is expected to produce 10 Democratic-leaning seats and one Republican-leaning seat.

That's what happens when you let a bunch of carpetbaggers move in to your state.

Approximately 5.6% to 7.4% of the U.S. federal civilian workforce resides or works in Virginia, with around 147,000 to over 190,000 employees depending on whether the data includes commuters, according to 2024–2025 reports. Virginia holds one of the highest concentrations of federal employees in the nation, heavily concentrated in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads.

Of course SCOTUS will Fumble the Football on this one. This Gerrymandering is out of control, States do not have the right to disenfranchise voters, no matter the numbers!

I grew up in Chantilly, VA in the 1950's and 60's. When I was little, it was a farming community.
When I go back to visit family that still lives there, I do not recognize the place. It has been completely paved over. All the farms are long gone. It is wall-to-wall housing developments, shopping centers and office parks.
I mourn for what was a very nice place. Like the song says, you don't appreciate what you have until it's gone.

The 2030 reaportionment and resulting redistricting is going to be brutal. Red states will get redder and blue states blue'er.
The problem with maximizing your districts is that in order to do so, you have to make safe seats more competitive. You can get wiped out in one election if the electorate swings away from you by a few points.
The democrats did this once in GA. Gave themselves another seat, which they promptly lost. They never did get to occupy that seat.

So, all the stories of Va voters having regrets about their radical new poohbah are a bit overblown?

My question is can the feds go through state voter rolls to match those names with citizenship records? I don’t have much confidence in the process outlined here:

Republicans wake up. Do not pay State taxes in Virginia. No taxes without representation.

I’m afraid this is a scenario we’re just plain stuck with. This is a problem Congress should have dealt with 200 years ago and didn’t. And it this point far too many Congress critters owe their existence to the fact they’re from a gerrymandered district, so good luck ever getting them to vote for more representative districts. I suspect the courts won’t touch it because it’s totally within the authority of Congress to fix it, they just won’t. It sucks, but all we can did is fight fire with fire.

"Safe" seats are a moral hazard. They produce radical incumbents and rampant corruption.

I am still confused by this. So the redistricting is just temporary until 2030? Then what? It gets redone again, goes back to the old districts, stays the same? This alleged temporary change in the Virginia Constitution will somehow manage to become permanent or seen as an approval to change the Constitution whenever politically convenient for Democrats. It will be twisted to grab and maintain power. It must be overturned by the courts as illegal.

This should not survive court action.
That being said, it depends upon the judge and his or her motivations.
We shall see.

Trump and Texas didn't start this in-between decade census gerrymandering so that was a lie Obama and Co, shoved down our throats. The GOP has got to (dream on) start playing to win at all costs - just like the Dems. And registered Republican voters - if you live in a state with early voting (like Virginia) then get out early and vote. I don't like early voting, mail in ballots and all their issues but until we take control and change the rules of the game. We have to play and vote smartly. Also, here in Virginia, I never heard from any national GOP or state GOP entity until the week before April 21 vote. So if you are not on social media like many older voters, probably would have been clueless about this referendum.
here is the breakdown of the vote: notice college towns like Charlottesville and Harrisonburg, black counties like Henrico (Richmond) and of course northern Virginia (Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and Falls Church, et al.

What's maddening is the District of Columbia originally encompassed that northern tip of Virginia. The super-blue area should be part of D.C. and have only 1 non-voting Representative. Perhaps it's time for a reset to original factory settings.

Please read my recent article in thethinkingconservative dot com:
how-to-eliminate-gerrymandering-forever
It explains a very simple geometric plan:
If a state or a section of a state has an even number of Congressional seats, cut it in half by population.
If a state or a section of a state has an odd number of Congressional seats, first build a square district around its geographic center, then cut it in half by population.
Repeat as long as needed.
Simple, fair, non-partisan, and non-discriminatory.
