Separation or Collapse: Which Comes First?

The province of Alberta has a legitimate grievance with the ROC (Rest of Canada). According to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, since the inception of Canada’s equalization program in 1957, which sees the wealthier provinces subsidizing their less fortunate counterparts, Alberta has made a net contribution of $67 billion, $2.9 billion alone in 2021 — which in turn represents only a portion of the province’s immense financial contribution to federal coffers and the governments and residents of other provinces. The Fraser Institute notes that the equalization drain represents “just a small part of the province’s outsized contribution to confederation in recent years.” It calculates that “the gap between Albertans’

Maybe Alberta can become part of Montana which it entirely borders to the south. I wonder how that could be worked out.

#2: I've been paying a bit more attention to Canada since "Gov. Trudeau" made his fateful trip to Mar-A-Lago after PDJT's election. The author failed to mention that the government report about people foraging for food was set in the year 2040, not today. Still, things could unravel quickly up there, and if they do Canada could disintegrate quickly. But it all starts with Alberta's secession, which instantly puts Ottawa into fiscal crisis. Their quick fix will be to attempt to stick Saskatchewan, BC, and maybe Manitoba with the shortfall, which will cause those provinces to secede as well. Needing revenue to support the Laurentians to the "level to which they become accustomed" I next see Ottawa *selling* its three territories to the north (Yukon, NT, and Nunavut) to the USA for big US Dollars. After they fritter away that money, the next area to split will be the Atlantic provinces as the elites will want to keep most of the taxpayer largesse in Ontario and Quebec. This two-province Canada will be unstable and eventually completely implode, and I can foresee both provinces becoming territories of the US that will be denied statehood -- as that's where all the anti-American elites live -- for an extended period of years. There is a possibility of splitting Ontario such that its Laurentian elites (on a line from Toronto to Ottawa) stay a territory and areas to the north and west become a separate state. Quebec would probably be happy with staying a territory (a la Puerto Rico) in exchange for control of their "language and culture"... or they might become an overseas "Department" of France... though I'm not sure the French will want to subsidize them heavily. Ultimately, Quebec will have to settle for a deal that gets them less than the "extortion payments" they have been receiving from the rest of Canada. The big question in all of this is the "kinetics"... or how quickly it happens. Depending upon how fiscally mismanaged Canada is over the next few years, it could go quickly. Or it might take 2-4 decades to play out. But it all starts with Alberta... the first domino.

This explains why Canadian leaders spent so much energy on Trump's 51st state jab. It distracts Canadians from the real problems in Canada.

Call me a silly goose, but I remember watching the news when I was a kid growing up in Detroit, and seeing recalcitrant, soap-dodging Marxist hippies becoming intimately acquainted with the business end of the policemen's billy clubs, thus compelling them to rethink their "rebellious" plans for the evening. Hilarity ensued. My, how things have changed. For starters, the "rebellious" beatniks have changed drastically. The male hippies of the 1960s no longer look like a hirsute Expedia troll, à la George Harrison on his iconic LP, "All Things Must Pass." FACT-O-RAMA! For you youngins, LP stands for "long play," meaning a full-sized record album

On May 5 Star Tribune reporter Paul Walsh covered the filing of charges against German Adriano Llangari Inga. Llangari Inga — “of Minneapolis” — was charged with driving drunk, unlicensed, and uninsured when he killed Victoria Eileen Harwell in a head-on crash on August 3, 2024, nine months before the charges were filed. When I wrote to ask Walsh if he could ascertain whether Llangari Inga was an illegal alien, Walsh corresponded with me in an obnoxious fashion. I followed up with ICE on my own and received this statement on May 6: U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on German Llangari Inga, 35, of Ecuador, with the

Former President Joe Biden appeared on “The View” earlier this week, and Democrats are about as happy as a housefly in a spider web. The former president sat down with the ladies on “The View” and discussed his presidency while slamming President Donald Trump, saying he had “the worst 100 days any president’s ever had.” Biden laughably suggested that he was in full control of his faculties while serving as president. However, he did take a modicum of responsibility for the Democrats’ humiliating losses in 2024, saying, “I was in charge, and he won.” There were some rather awkward moments during his appearance in which his wife, former first lady Jill Biden,

As of last night, Mr. Singer has stepped down and been succeeded as MI chairman by Betsy DeVos. Mr. Singer is the founder and president of Elliott Investment Management. In our modern age, the electric grid is the mother of all networks. Without electricity, advanced forms of transportation and communications virtually grind to a halt and nearly all digital and electronic devices are rendered practically useless. When the grid goes down, we lose conveniences like air conditioning, lighting, and other amenities that we often take for granted. Several days ago, Spain, Portugal, and parts of France and Belgium lost power for an extended period of time, demonstrating just how devastating a total grid collapse can be to our modern way of life. During this colossal blackout, the largest that Europe has ever experienced, more than 50 million people

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Dozens of residents were urgently evacuated from a 12-story condominium building on Tuesday after construction workers discovered a growing crack in a support column in the building’s parking garage. What we know: The incident unfolded quickly as Clearwater Fire & Rescue and Clearwater police officers went door to door, evacuating about 60 people from the South Beach III Condos, located at 1460 Gulf Boulevard. No injuries were reported, and the building has not collapsed, but officials say no one will be allowed back inside until engineers deem it safe. "This is a very well-managed building," said resident David Zuzman, who was forced to leave with his two children. "I’m shocked."

Today the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence released a report on the FBI’s investigation of James (“Tom”) Hodgkinson’s attempt to assassinate the Republican House members’ baseball team. You can read the report here. The Committee excoriates the FBI for mislabeling Hodgkinson’s firing of 70 rounds at Republican Congressmen an instance of “suicide by cop.” That claim never made any sense. Hodgkinson lived in Illinois, and if his overriding objective had been suicide, he didn’t need to drive to Washington, D.C. They have cops in Illinois. He didn’t need to case out the park

Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Chicago, New York, and other cities could have avoided their current dire conditions if only they had heeded the lessons of Detroit. In 1950 the Motor City was home to nearly two million people and built half the cars in the world. Today two-thirds of those people are gone and its auto industry is a shell of its former self. After decades of decline, Detroit is on the way back with a new can-do attitude. But its troubled history gives today’s urban leaders

The Catholic Church has issued a warning to its clergy in Washington state: Any priest who complies with a new law requiring the reporting of child abuse confessions to authorities will be excommunicated. The new law, which will take effect on July 27, eliminates the long-standing confidentiality of the confessional, forcing Catholic leaders and lawmakers into a highly charged standoff over religious liberty and child protection. However, the Archdiocese of Seattle and several bishops argue that the law not only contravenes church doctrine but crosses constitutional lines, while supporters maintain it is a crucial step to protect minors from abuse.

That’s what happened on Wednesday, when Chief Justice John Roberts took it upon himself to subtly thumb his nose at President Trump and conservatives (snip) … the judiciary is a co-equal branch of government, separate from the others, with the authority to interpret the Constitution as law and strike down, obviously, acts of Congress or acts of the president. That innovation doesn’t work if … the judiciary’s not independent. Its job is to, obviously, decide cases, but in the course of that, check the excesses
