Let's Aim for Historical Accuracy

As an amateur historian -- and probably not a good one -- I go nuts when I see amateurish fictions tendered as core premises. This is no more frequently found than in Hollywood; but do not kid yourself, it is not confined to Hollywood...Of course, there are other mistakes, but the grandest mistake of all is Islam. It is now coming out into the popular realm that the historicity of Mohammed may be a total fabrication. Not merely a distortion, but a total fabrication. Robert Spencer has written a polemic questioning the whole historicity of Islam’s founder. And not just Robert Spencer, but Dr. Jay Smith.

Comments:

Is it possible that the very existence of Mohammad, the high prophet of Islam is a complete fabrication and never existed? That Islam itself is a total fraud? Konrad makes a solid scholarly case for that proposition.

I certainly do not know about the historical fact of Islam's existence, but I do know that calling it a religion is wrong . The is God. There is no Allah. The two could not exist in the same dimension, unless Allah is Satan by another name.

I have been reading up on this stuff for years. I've read Crone's paper on "Hagarism" (proto-Islam) and a couple of others. I am intrigued and liked what she had to say. Unfortunately, her writing style is - shall we say - not user friendly. She was an academic, writing for other academics. She knew she was going to be nitpicked to death on every jot and tittle. (An appropriate allusion, given the subject here.) Robert Spencer has valid points but I don't trust his citations much and he has a tendency to rant, which makes me cautious of him. I've read his "Did Muhammad Exist?: An Inquiry into Islam’s Obscure Origins", both the 2012 and 2024 updated versions. (I just saw that he is also a blogger. That explains a few things.) I VERY much recommend "In God's Path: The Arab Conquests and the Creation of the Islamic Empire" by Robert G. Hoyland, Oxford University Press, 2015. It doesn't discuss the development of Islam, per se, but it's in there. Hoyland has a very readable writing style, logical organization and maps that you can read. I also recommend "In the Shadow of the Sword: The Birth of Islam and the Rise of Global Arab Empire" by Tom Holland, Anchor Books (Random House), 2012. He does get into the development of Islam, pretty much covering all the major religions in the area at the time AND their various sects, divisions, off-shoots, etc. It is readable, but his complicated subject and the amount of information makes it hard to present it in a straightforward way. Stick with it. All of the above available through Amazon.com. However, Crone's "Hagarism" costs $350 in paperback and almost $2000 in hardback. (I have an obscure digital copy of her paper, not in book form.)

I've read the Quran many times, in many translations, and also the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad. Nothing in this speculative essay strikes me as remotely on the mark with respect to the likely truth.

In the 1960s and 1970s, a totalitarian movement almost destroyed the republic. Now it threatens to do so again.Recently, I wrote an essay on the late 19th-century Russian pogroms that forced my great-grandparents to flee to the United States. I observed the striking and foreboding parallels between that old eruption of Jew-hatred and the rise of Red-Green Alliance antisemitism in the United States. I did so to highlight a peculiar irony of history: None of this is new.

On Friday, the story of an American citizen being held by immigration officials for ten days burst into the political sphere. It was the perfect storm for the press, who were salivating over the opportunity to turn one of the Trump administration's best polling issues into a liability. As the original reporting went, Jose Hermosillo was wrongfully arrested in Albuquerque, NM, and held for over a week despite telling ICE officials that he was an American. It wasn't until his family showed up with a birth certificate and a Social Security card that he was released.

Several days ago, invoking the Alien Enemies Act (“AEA”), President Trump ordered that “250 Tren de Aragua members and 23 MS-13 members wanted for alleged crimes in El Salvador” be deported. The woke left, led by the Soros minions, immediately asked Judge James Boasberg of the US District Court in DC to stop it—and amazingly, he agreed via minimalist “minute orders.” Boasberg ignored Trump’s findings and ordered that the planes carrying the deportees (already en route to El Salvador) return to the US. This grotesquely wrong decision justifies impeachment.

Despite constantly gaslighting by the mainstream media, Americans knew the economy was in poor shape and these latest numbers prove it. Month after month, the government bean-counters under former-president Biden published overly optimistic estimates for everything from job growth to the size of the economy, only to have those numbers routinely—and quietly—revised down later.
