Pearl Harbor and the Power of Unity

There are a few calendar dates that are burned into the American psyche. Some endure for good and happy reasons. Everybody knows why we celebrate July 4 and December 25. Both are part of our national identity as a free nation, the freest on Earth, founded in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Others endure for tragic reasons. November 22 saw the assassination of a president and, days later, his alleged killer, much of it brought directly into our living rooms as the first (and only) such event during the television age. September 11 was a horrifying example of murder brought about by men who hated America simply for being America.

The author mentions the killing of the United CEO and prosecution (sorry, persecution) of a good Samaritan as examples of what divides us. How about refusing to check and verify the bonafides of a Kenyan Muslim alien with seven social security numbers before installing him as Chief Executive?

Our government does not deserve that kind of dedication today and the sacrifice of the millions of Americans who willingly risked their lives to defend this country. It's a good thing because the kind of patriots who fought in WW2 are far fewer in number.

In 1941 the United States declared war on Japan on December 8, and on Germany on December 11. This was the last time we dispatched our armed forces to a broad killing function under the collective title of war that included the provision of "unconditional surrender" of the designated foe. If we are unable to require "unconditional surrender of an enemy, then we should not put the lives of American military personnel in the line of hostile fire. We have gotten ourselves into a real mess situation be engaging our military into a situation where we have to begin to search for an "exit strategy". The only exit strategy must include the demand for unconditional surrender or our forces should not be engaged in "police action" type of conflict that too often results in the questionable loss of American lives.

The military-industrial complex needs wars and conflict to keep the profit margin up. How long did the Iraq war drag on? How can you win any war with rules of engagement? How many good Americans died needlessly?

Americans were different back then. Their only sources of information were the newspapers and radio. Thus they only got the government side of the story. That sparked the patriotism and self sacrifice that generation is famous for. I suspect if they had access to the amount and type of information we have now, it would not have been nearly so cut and dried. Corruption and lying are not new, they are just harder to hide.

Since history isn't taught any more, I wonder what percentage of Americans under 50 would know what December 7th stands for. My bet is that probably 20% or less would even know.

Notice that so far this morning the mainstream media has been ignoring what happened at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Chances are they are doing that so as not to embarrass or upset today’s population of Japan who had nothing to do with what happened at Pearl Harbor. In that respect there is recent video now on YouTube, of a Japanese aircraft carrier at the US Navy Base at San Diego, showing that Japanese warship named Kaga, that was the same name of a Second World War Japanese aircraft carrier named Kaga that took part in the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec. 7, 1941, and that was sunk at the Battle of Midway in 1942. The video showed today’s Kaga passing by the retired US Navy aircraft carrier named Midway that is currently a museum ship! No doubt times have changed!

In a quiz to young Americans the question was who bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941 prompting America entry into WWII. The most common answer was Viet Nam. Bush I also forgot the date.

Pope Francis unveiled the annual nativity scene at the Vatican over the weekend - raising some eyebrows in the process. A noticeable addition this year saw the seminal scene's baby Jesus draped in a keffiyeh - a traditional scarf used by Palestinians as a national symbol. Jesus was born into a Jewish family in Bethlehem some 2,000 years ago - and his death triggered the birth of Christianity. A statement from the wheelchair-bound pontiff, moreover, saw him humbly ask onlookers for peace in the Middle East, weeks after he called for an investigation into what he said may be a 'genocide' occurring in the Gaza Strip.

The re-opening of the Notre Dame Cathedral, which suffered extensive fire damage in 2019, occurred on Saturday, and dozens of world leaders were on hand for the festivities. There was one notable absence, though. President Joe Biden was nowhere to be found. Instead, Jill Biden showed up with her daughter. That alone spurred questions given the president has long claimed to be a "devout Catholic." Yet, he couldn't be bothered to show up for a once-in-a-lifetime event that other world leaders flocked to? Of course, while the White House will likely claim a scheduling conflict (there was nothing on the president's schedule for Saturday),

This is too funny. For President Trump at Notre Dame, it’s an ordinary walk to his seat, except something happened. It starts out with Poland’s President Andrzej Duda standing up to greet President Donald Trump. They are friends, and Duda is one of the EU heads of state that is seriously thrilled to see President Trump return (Hungary’s Orban is another). However, after Duda stands things get funny because all the other dignitaries then feel obligated to stand and greet President Trump. President Trump ended up turning his simple walk to his seat, into a reception line of foreign dignitaries who stood at attention to greet him.
