‘Fact check’ has become just another
word for censorship

“Fact-checking” is like “fake news”: Something that is now entirely in the eye of the beholder. At the vice presidential debate this week, the CBS moderators once again tried to show that they were the fair and impartial people in the room Except that — as with the Trump-Harris debate — they only seemed interested in fact-checking in one direction. Against the Republican. On Tuesday night the subject of Springfield, Ohio, once again came up. And once again Springfield revealed one of the big problems of this media era.

Moderators are unnecessary. The parties could agree on a list of topics beforehand, and be given a set time for each of them to discuss that topic. Each candidate could be allowed 5 questions they would like to ask the opposition candidate to address. 1 minute response time allowed. We also don't need side by side pictures showing the other party smirking -- or is that information useful?

Joe Biden made history for himself on Friday and created chaos when he appeared in the White House briefing room for the first time since assuming power nearly four years ago. By doing so, he also undercut his sidekick Kamala Harris as she desperately tries to pander to voters. A jovial Biden utilized his appearance to boast about the latest fake job numbers from the Labor Department along with the temporary agreement last night between International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance to reopen the ports.

President Joe Biden shocked reporters Friday by showing up to the White House briefing room for the first time of his presidency. As the Friday briefing moved past its scheduled hour, the door to the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room swung open to expose the 81-year-old president carrying a binder. There were audible gasps in the room, as several journalists greeted him. 'My name's Joe Biden,' the president said. 'Welcome to the swimming pool.' The briefing room was famously constructed over the White House's indoor swimming pool by order of President Richard Nixon to accommodate TV cameras. The U.S. economy added far more jobs than expected in September, pointing to a vital employment picture as the unemployment rate edged lower, the Labor Department reported Friday. Nonfarm payrolls surged by 254,000 for the month, up from a revised 159,000 in August and better than the 150,000 Dow Jones consensus forecast. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1%, down 0.1 percentage point. With upward revisions from previous months, the report eases concerns about the state of the labor market and likely locks in the Federal Reserve to a more gradual pace of interest rate reductions.

My only conversation with Pete Rose came in the early 1980s, when he was with the Phillies. And he started it. It was early April, a Friday night, and the Phils were to be on NBC’s “Game of the Week,” the next day. Some NBC public relations fellows were driving down to Philly for the game and asked if I’d like to join them. With our red media field-access credentials dangling from our belts, we watched batting practice from behind the cage. When Rose finished his swings, he walked over, eyed the press passes, then began to speak. Boy, did he.

The dockworkers' union has agreed to return to work after the White House intervened and strong-armed the U.S. Maritime Alliance, representing shipping companies, to give the union what they wanted regarding wages. The dockworkers will return to work immediately under the old contract and the two sides will have until January 15 to hammer out the outstanding issues. Why Biden didn't intervene to prevent the strike is clear. He wanted the International Longshoreman Union (ILA) to demonstrate its muscle and willingness to shut down the U.S. economy to get what it wanted.
