An alarming study has spotlighted how 42 million food stamp recipients spend their welfare handouts on ultra-processed junk food.
Coca-Cola, Sprite and other soft drinks are the most commonly-bought items via the $135 billion-a-year Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a new study says.
Candy, potato chips, frozen pizza, ice cream, cookies, and other ultra-processed food dominates the top 20 items, says a report from the Economic Policy Innovation Center (EPIC).
Report author Matthew Dickerson says recipients spend 'spend significant portions of their allotments on junk food.'

I’d bet not a lot of snap recipients know how to cook actual meals. God forbid we teach home economics in school anymore.

I remember reading about some mini-mart owners in Minnesota that get food stamps, use them to buy soft drinks that they then resell in their mini-marts. A few months back at the grocery store, I witnessed an Asian man who couldn't speak a word of English buying bags of frozen shrimp, and whole pineapples with a SNAP card. There are two Chinese restaurants within walking distance of the grocery store. I could only conclude that he was buying stock for one of the restaurants.

FTA: food stamp enrollment surged from 17.3 million beneficiaries in 2001 to 42.1 million last year.
Easy to spot in the grocery store. Not much produce in the cart. Often riding a skooter too.

I have seen a guy with two shopping carts mounded up with expensive foods, ring them up and then hand two "EBT cards" so WE paid for all his tons of food.
Probably a totally crooked deal.

A study???
A person would have to have been living under a rock for three generations, not to have noticed that we have “the fastest poor people in the history of mankind. “

Pretty stupid article, ground beef, chicken, milk and baked bread were alos in the top 10. the second ten had infant formula and a few other items that I wouldn't classify as 'bad.'
I don't watch how other people pay for their orders but walk around any supermarket and the stuff you see in other people's cart is amazing.

No one NEEDS junk food. And if that is what 42 Million people on public assistance are buying with my tax dollars, then maybe they don't need welfare in the first place.

The rich and the poor have one thing in common. They don't worry about the price of steak.

Many of those companies rely on this program for their profits.
The administration of the program ensures a huge jobs program for government workers but would presume such programs could benefit by using AI technology thus reducing the number of people needed to process paperwork, for instance.

I went to college to be a Home Economics teacher. (I did substitute teaching but never got that dream job.)
The 4 food groups have changed.
Do you know what the new 4 food groups are?
Canned, boxed, frozen and ready to eat.

Our local grocery store runs ads the first 2 weeks that SNAP cards get refilled. These poor folks buy cart loads of junk food PLUS crab legs(BOGO) and frozen shrimp(BOGO). And steaks to go with the seafood. The rest of us buy meats( managers special) and hamburger, if it's on sale.

Well necessity is the mother of invention. You would see plenty of them learning to cook if their food stamps would not purchase any number of unhealthy processed foods.

All of these stupid policies were on purpose. A fat, slow, stupid and dependent population is easy for government to control. The UK is certainly proof of that as well.

No shocker. Wifey took a part time job at Publix market to avoid boredom. She knew what EBT cards were buying. When the usual suspects maxed out their cards, they always had a few more with which to pay for their groceries,

I receive a debit card each quarter from my insurance provider with $180 credit to be used for OTC health supplies such as vitamins, bandages, etc. If I try to use it for, say, a bar of soap, the whole transaction is denied. IMO, same should apply to EBT cards. A list of healthy produce, dairy, meats, and grains allowed; all junk food denied.

The only good news here is the perps will die from all the junk food, thus reducing the costs to the Taxpayers!

25 million additional recipients since 2001. That's a massive percentage increase.
Not to worry, it's government money.

That is parallel to the non-tax payer group. Half the people in the country do not pay taxes and are eligible for a 5,000 dollar 'earned income credit'. They didn't earn a dime. What's gainful employment for these none-tax payers". Government has defined that as one hour of work is gainful employment. You cannot win for losing with Democrats in office.
