At the intersection of E. 12th Street and 16th Avenue in Oakland, California, drivers are now greeted with four-way stop signs hanging overhead where traffic lights used to hang.
The City of Oakland replaced the traffic lights with stop signs in response to months of recurring copper thefts and tampering with the lights’ electrical power boxes, CBS San Francisco reports. (snip) The homeless encampment, which stretches for three blocks of the neighborhood, illegally connects to the city’s power and causes disruptions to the traffic lights, according to CBS San Francisco.

In a significant legal victory, Ian Smith, co-owner of Atilis Gym in Bellmawr, New Jersey, has had all 80 charges against him dismissed by a New Jersey court. The charges stemmed from Smith’s decision to reopen his gym in May 2020, in defiance of Democratic Governor Phil Murphy’s COVID-19 lockdown mandates.
Smith reopened Atilis Gym, arguing that the lockdown orders were unconstitutional and harmful to small businesses. The confrontation escalated in July 2020 when police officers forcefully arrested Smith for repeatedly violating the state’s shutdown orders. Officers, including K-9 units, burst through the gym’s doors and arrested the owners for defying the governor’s directives.

Kurdish citizens protested across Turkey after a court sentenced Selahattin Demirtas, former co-chair of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) and two-time presidential candidate, to 42 years in prison.
Officials in 20 provinces banned demonstrations, social gatherings, and public events for four days in a bid to tamp down Kurdish outrage.
Demirtas, 51, has been in prison since 2016. He managed to place third in Turkey’s 2018 presidential election despite being in jail. Shortly after that election, Turkish courts finally got around to convicting him of links to the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK),

Pope Francis told CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell that conservatives are willfully blind and manifest a “suicidal attitude” in their narrowmindedness.
In an interview set to air Sunday on 60 Minutes, the pope asserts that a conservative “is someone who clings to something and does not want to see beyond that. It is a suicidal attitude.”
“One thing is to take tradition into account and consider situations from the past but quite another is to be closed up inside a dogmatic box,” he adds.

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s commencement address at Benedictine College is sparking an insane amount of vitriol from the left because they hate Christianity and want it out of the public domain.
Butker spoke out against progressive ideology in its many forms during his 20-minute speech to Catholic students, including the tyranny of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), the demand from the “cultural elite” for Christians to stay silent and how being Catholic alone is not enough to fight against the “growing support for degenerate culture.”

It was another bad day for the case against Donald Trump after the former president’s legal team absolutely destroyed Michael Cohen. But don’t take my word for it. Trump’s lawyer, Todd Blanche, was so effective at boxing Cohen in on his lies that he left CNN’s Anderson Cooper absolutely stunned.
"But the last 20 minutes of court today right before the lunch break, it was incredible,” he admitted. "Elie Honig on my program last night had talked about, on a cross-examination, lawyers want to kind of put the witness in a — build a box around the witness and then slam it shut. That's what Todd Blanche did to Michael Cohen."

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Thursday issued a pardon for Daniel Perry, an Army sergeant who was convicted of murder for fatally shooting a Black Lives Matter (BLM) protester in 2020. (snip) The proclamation grants Perry a full pardon and “restoration of full civil rights of citizenship.”
(snip) Perry was working as an Uber driver and dropped a passenger off in downtown Austin. He was attempting to move his car through a crowd when he said Foster, who was legally armed, aimed his rifle at him.
Perry also legally had a gun on him and fired the pistol at Foster because he feared for his life.

Having served on three Manhattan juries, I would not be surprised if the 12 men and women hearing New York vs. Donald J. Trump acquitted him of all charges.
During two civil actions and one criminal case, my fellow jurors were serious, professional and movingly civic-minded. A quiet, solemn patriotism infused our deliberations. Several jurors said that we should respect the justice system because, someday, we might need it to respect us. (snip) These three cases confirm that Manhattan juries are sober and perfectly capable of fairness.
This is good news for Trump.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Kristof wrote in his new book that the American press should not remain “neutral” when it comes to covering former President Donald Trump because of the alleged threat he poses to democracy. (snip) In his book, he warns about Trump and his allies’ alleged attempts to “undermine democracy” and establish “populist authoritarianism,” according to CNN. Kristof also argues that, in a second term, Trump could weaponize the federal government “to punish or intimidate news organizations” and even carry out “assassinations.”

A New York elementary school that forced a 10-year-old student with severe asthma and anxiety to wear a mask during the Covid-19 pandemic despite her (having) a medical exemption will be going to court to defend itself from her lawsuit. (snip) In 2021, Sarah was forced to continue masking up in class despite receiving confirmation of a medical exemption from her treating physician.
School officials allegedly "harassed and humiliated her," and even filmed her pulling down the mask to try and breathe.
Sarah experienced numerous asthma attacks, and her anxiety worsened.
