The storm didn't seem that bad so it was surprising trees were blown down. Glad no one was hurt.

This is odd , those huge trees would have a massive root system much larger than what we see.

Lived in a rental for one year. Three pines tress in a front yard. Each about 80 feet tall, no branches for the first 60 feet. All riddled with holes. Could hear them crack in the wind. Loud cracking from the trunks themselves. Were they going to fall? No way of telling. Those trees were the main reason I left that rental.

I was in our house one day when two enormous pines crashed to the ground, FORTUNATELY parallel to our 1730s structure. The whole house shook. Our tree guy once told me, if you hear a crack, Look Up. You'll have a chance to get out of the way. Those people on the golf course were very, very lucky.

This is the most exciting thing to happen at The Masters since Arnold Palmer hit a shot that landed on a snake and the snake refused to move. Considering how much money is spent making this the best golf course in the world you'd think they'd remove trees that are unstable.

It is a miracle that no one was killed in a very nasty manner... We have 100' pines on our property in Wisconsin. The property is all sand and with that type of pine and its very small root ball, they can fall over easily. It's amazing that so many stay standing. We have to keep them far away from any structures. Near the house we have Oaks and Maples to slow erosion and look nice. When we were kids, after a big rain, we'd go through the woods and push smaller pine trees over with our bare hands.

Re #4, you know they are 100 feet tall exactly how? That is about the extreme upper limit for pine trees, and the overwhelming majority are more like 50-60 ft tall. But "100 feet" sounds a lot better when the DM "terrified" and "horrific" writers are shoveling up their story, don't you think? And another new story puts the trees at "about 65 feet tall", which is a whole lot closer to the normal size of tall Georgia pine trees. I lived in Fla and have family in Georgia, and have cut up a few of these trees after they have come down in storms over my lifetime. I never saw on taller than about 65-70 ft, measured on the ground after they fell, just out of curiosity.

The some southern pines can get pretty tall. Also, the roots are spread out and very shallow. They topple easily.

PROLOGUE: THE INFORMATION WAR In 1950, Sen. Joseph McCarthy claimed that he had proof of a communist spy ring operating inside the government. Overnight, the explosive accusations blew up in the national press, but the details kept changing. Initially, McCarthy said he had a list with the names of 205 communists in the State Department; the next day he revised it to 57. Since he kept the list a secret, the inconsistencies were beside the point. The point was the power of the accusation, which made McCarthy’s name synonymous with the politics of the era.
