Salem, N.H. — Nikki Haley plans to lean into retail politicking on the 2024 GOP primary trail, focusing on more intimate events that she believes will heighten the contrast between her and the early favorite for the nomination, former president Donald Trump. The former South Carolina governor laid out her strategy during a town hall in Salem, N.H. Tuesday night, when one of the voters gathered at the Derry-Salem Elks Lodge asked how she planned to best Trump. “When you look at the situation that we have, President Trump has 25 percent of Republicans,” Haley said. “It’s a hard 25 percent. They are ‘Trump or no one.’” “There are 75 percent other Republicans

She'll need more than a good idea. I like her, a little. But she doesn't have it. There is no room for moderate. No room for what five years ago would have seemed reasonable. Now, it just looks weak. There is no path for weakness through the swamp that is the future. It'll take strength, perseverance, and an intensity she just doesn't have. The fact that she doesn't see that, is telling enough for me that she isn't the one. Nikki is like a friend who shows up for a fight to the death, and she's worried about what she's wearing. She might be a fine person, but not the one you want to fight for your life with. That's where we are. Nikki is not the one.

The Trumpistas will be in for a rude awakening, come either April or November '24. They will blame everything but the bully boy reactions to anyone with the temerity to challenge Trump. Alienating your own party adherents is not wise. Worse, it is likely independents will flock to the movement under those circumstances. This is akin to the Blues Brothers on a mission for God. So it looks like the battle between Gov. DeSantis and Disney isn’t over yet. In January a DeSantis spokesperson announced that “The corporate kingdom has come to an end.” But the new board members weren’t actually in place until the end of February after DeSantis signed a law to put them there. Capping a year-long feud with one of the state’s largest employers, DeSantis signed into law a bill officially granting a new state-appointed board the responsibilities of Disney’s Reedy Creek Improvement District and named a slate of conservative leaders. The Senate on Wednesday passed a bill that would end the national Covid-19 emergency declared by then-President Donald Trump on March 13, 2020. The final vote was overwhelmingly bipartisan, 68-23. The joint resolution, which cleared the House earlier this year, now heads to President Joe Biden's desk. The vote comes on the heels of two other successful efforts led by Republicans in approving legislation rescinding Biden administration policies. A White House official said in a statement to CNN that while the President “strongly opposes” this bill, the administration is already winding down the emergency by May 11

Most Republicans do not believe that former President Donald Trump should be disqualified from running for the White House if he faces criminal charges, according to a new poll from Quinnipiac University. The Manhattan District Attorney's office has been investigating Trump related to alleged hush money payments to an adult film star who claimed she had an affair with Trump, all ahead of his 2016 campaign. While Trump said this month he expected to be arrested in the probe, no charges have been announced and the New York grand jury considering the case is not expected to be asked to vote on an indictment this week, NBC News is reporting.

The US Senate voted on Wednesday to repeal the resolution that gave a green light for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, an effort to return a basic war power to Congress from the White House 20 years after an authorization many now say was a mistake. Iraqi deaths are estimated in the hundreds of thousands and nearly 5,000 US troops were killed after George W Bush’s administration falsely claimed Saddam Hussein was stockpiling weapons of mass destruction. “This body rushed into a war,” said the Virginia senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat who has pushed for years to repeal the powers, adding that the Iraq war has had “massive consequences”.
