A Seattle family made a 1,300-mile trip down to San Diego, California to pick up their new four-legged friend, Harvey, after falling in love with his 'silly grin' caused by a facial deformity.
Sherry Lankston and her two sons began their trek to the Golden State last week after they saw a post from the San Diego County Department of Animal Services about an animal up for adoption whose face has an endearing lopsided smile.
Harvey, a year and a half old husky, was posted by the Southern California animal services department on February 10, stating that the pup was looking for a good home and family.

I'll get loads of hate for this: We have made pets far too important in our society. I've seen people impoverish themselves to maintain, even to save the life of a pet. Yes, a pet can be nice, but, ultimately, it is an animal. And we eat lots of animals.

#1 To each his own. Why does it bother you? Pets give us so much love I don't have a problem with people spending money on animals or saving their life. They will even give up their life for you.

I am baffled this is news. A good big dog is hard to find, so people do drive long distances to get one, it's pretty common. My niece and her dad drove to wisconsin from san diego to adopt her giant black poodle, and my boss drove from san francisco to Pennsylvania to adopt his big white adorable poodle. This happens all the time.

My wife, child and I drove from Reno To Elko (Nevada) to obtain an Australian Cattle Dog. It was about 600 mi. round trip. The dog works out fine except she continues to confine all house visitors to appropriate fields.

Someone once told me that a person can be judged by how that person treats animals. I have since taken that too heart. I have no use for anyone that would or does mistreat and animal. There are three things that infuriate me, and in no particular order, child abuse, elder abuse and animal abuse.

Ahhhh!!
I really didn't know much about Huskies until I watched "The Girl With The Dogs" on Youtube. She is a long time doggie/kitty groomer but also a great educator about the temperament and care of the differing breeds. And Huskies are the Prima Donnas of the dog world. So cute!!

This is a beautiful story, and I thank OP for sharing it. That mom has given her boys an experience that will shape their lives and never be forgotten as they grow into men and future fathers.
Imagine the conversations that took place in their home as the decision was made and plans came together. And then the car trip, current pup included. Some of my best times as a child were on long rides with family.
People do all sorts of things that others see as crazy, be it driving days to ski a certain range, follow a favorite band for concerts, do motorcycle trips, etc. Some people even take huge trips to get a dog they've feel is meant for them.
Lucky boys and dogs to have a mom who has that kind of heart. How great would the world be if all kids could have that kind of home.

Thank you to the beautiful family who adopted this dog. You know and understand the unconditional love an animal can give you and pets are important for numerous reasons, and yes many would and do give their lives for us. God bless this mom and all those who have hearts like hers, something we need more of in this world,IMOHO. Thanks for posting the story also, it brightened my day.

The family had friends in San Diego so the trip had a dual purpose. They didn't even know if the Husky would still be available when they started the trip, but the Mom said it would be worth it anyway. Very sweet.
Some people spend millions on collections of wine, art, guns, cars, etc. That is their choice. Taking a school holiday trip to visit friends and pick up a rescue dog doesn't rank on my list of misplaced priorities. To each his own and let their conscience guide them on how to spend their money.
