Donald Trump is not stupid.
His opponents have always underestimated him because of the colloquial way he talks–sounding vastly different than most people in the highly educated class. Not sounding educated, they assume he isn’t and by extension isn’t smart.
But in recent weeks Trump has been acting as if he is stupid, and I have to say I am surprised.
Trump has been attacking Ron DeSantis on the COVID lockdown issue, arguing that the governor’s reputation as a freedom fighter is unearned. Trump even implies that DeSantis was something of a COVID fascist, while Trump himself was fighting to reopen the American economy.
That is a profoundly stupid line of attack.

Start talking about inflation, interest rates, rising crime, out of control border, "woke" education, etc, etc.
You need to start focusing on what matters to people.

Stupid, yes. Uncharacteristic, no. Trump previously insulted Ted Cruz's wife and made wild accusations about Cruz's father. In fact, his attacks on Cruz are why I did not vote for him in the 2016 primary. I did vote for him in the general election in 2016 and again in 2020 but in 2024, I will be voting for Ron DeSantis.

Among Trump’s larger flaws is an inherent inability to judge character. And to not let his alligator mouth overload his frog-arse.

Trump is being Trump. He calls things exactly as he sees them. He was also a very successful businessman who destroyed many competitors along the way to get there. He has that same perspective in politics -- if he perceives that you are in his way, he will attack you with abandon!!!
I like DeSantis, and will gladly support him in 2028 and 2032. But 2024 is Trump's, and he has my full backing and support. He is the only person in America with a thick enough skin and the proven track record of standing up to the Demon-Rats. I truly believe that he is the only person who can undo the incredible damage that the Demon-Rats and Senile Joe bidet have done to this country!!!
But right now, DeSantis is a popular Republican governor in what has become a solidly Republican state. He has a very supportive state legislature that will give him pretty much anything he wants. So he looks very strong. Yet that is the same way we all saw George W. Bush not too long ago -- and we all know what a disaster that turned out to be when he ran for president and won. He looked so strong as governor, but when he went to DC and had to face ugly, unrelenting Demon-Rat opposition, he folded like a wet noodle.
While I think DeSantis is stronger than Bush, I also think he needs more time as governor to hone his skills. And if he supports Trump in 2024 and doesn't run against him, Trump will reward him with a lot of spotlight time. It's a win/win/win for Trump/Desantis, and most importantly, this republic!!!!!

deSantis has a group of advisors joined at the hip with the globalists at the Club for Growth....and he's quietly trying to rewrite his Covid "history"; while he did a lot of things that went against the grain of the CDC and the demented garden gnome named Fauci, he's not the saint he's trying to tell us that he is or was. Trump is merely reminding the Gov that he's got to worry and look over his shoulder because Trump is going to remind everyone that deSantis was naked, just like the Emperor.

It is foolish to expect anyone is, and has always been, a perfect man let alone politician. Trump will get the nomination with ease unless he keeps speaking foolishly - which might still be a stretch. But we aren't in this to win just a nomination again. We are desperately in need of winning the whole enchilada, House, Senate, AND Presidency. We won't if in-fighting exposes Republicans as childish and petty. Remember the 11th Commandment - Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican.

Very poor judgment by President Trump.
He should embrace Governor De Santis - - praise him for being the true freedom conservative and great governor which he is - - and position him as the future of the freedom movement.
President Trump's unwarranted criticisms are starting to turn me off.

Trump needs to respect DeSantis and compete with him on ideas and keep it clean.
These attacks harm Trump far more than DeSantis.
And I am a firm Trump supporter.

Trump seems to thrive on conflict so much that he creates it when none exists. Ditto what #2 said. Trump is in his element when he discusses issues. His childish attacks and name calling of actual Republicans only provides endless sound bites for the dishonest media to serve to low-info voters.

DeSantis said he would not run, was not running...received lots of Trump praise.
Crawfished,..is now raising big money, targeting Trump donors, bashing Trump.
Of course Trump is going to counter punch.
"Some" people are treating this as if it is the final months/weeks before the election, it certainly is not.
DeSantis may not even run, and if he does may not officially do so unless Trump bows out. Whatever damage Trump comments do can be repaired with a single joint appearance.
All of this is just another in a Looooong line of "OMG! Did you see what Trump did THIS TIME!!!" stories

Never forget that it was Trump and his team who gave us "14 days to flatten the curve," and while DeSantis may have gone along with the plan as did almost the entire country, it was DeSantis leading the charge to reopen when the 14 days had run it's course. Wrong subject for Trump to be attacking DeSantis on. In fact, he shouldn't be attacking DeSantis at all, considering DeSantis isn't attacking him. It's exposing Trump's thin skin, and is beginning to make me think he wants the nom too badly and maybe for the wrong reason (placating his bruised ego after the 2020 theft).

I am PRO-TRUMP, period. I don't think anyone else has what it takes to expose, oppose and FIGHT the swamp. That said, I believe that if the 2024 primary, and general election for that matter, ends up looking like a street fight, Trump will lose. He'll still get my vote, but I don't think he'll carry the majority.

I really don't care about the name calling. I tune it out. I can decide that for myself. Don't need any help there.
I want to hear about policy. Especially economics. Debt will kill the country.
In 2016, the final three Republicans were Trump, Cruz, and Kasich, with Trump winning it all. Kasich was a Democrat, and kindly put, Cruz did not catch on to be competitive.
It will all depend on who will be the final three in 2024. Watch a few debates and see who rises to the top. Remember, in 2016, before the debates the top contenders to Trump were Scott Walker and Ben Carson. Neither made it through the primaries.
Who's the RINO? Neither.
Who's the globalist? At this point, neither.
Main reason I supported Trump in the primaries was because none of them especially resonated with me. A few looked promising. Did not want a career politician. Was willing to bet on an outsider, so took a chance on Trump.
Still don't want a career politician. Still willing to take a chance on an outsider. Also willing to take a chance on someone other than Trump. Provided they show promise. Also willing to stay home if all the choices are terrible.

DeSantis cannot win without Trumps support
the smarter play would be for DeSantis to do everything necessary to get Trump across the finish line tape and be an active participant to the efforts necessary to turn this ship around drain the swamp and MAGA. Pick a high profile cabinet position from which he can run for 2028. But if he runs as a Trump alternative, he loses AND his future is done. There is no 2028 for him.
Which is what Karl Rove and the Bushes and Romneys and McConnells really want. Trump gone, and no one to continue that populist limited government National, not one world, message.
If Desantis is Trump 2.0, our resident never Trumpers would never support him.
If Desantis wants to be Trump 2.0, and not just a governor who runs a state the way Trump would he should start supporting Trump all out, and he's not, Not even an acknowledgement
And Trump is right, his efforts to restart the economy allowed free markets, not government dictates to get this rolling. Big government swampists of the RNC didn't get to whet their beak.

FTA: "So the attacks won’t work, except as a signal to Trump’s hardcore base that they should dislike DeSantis."
This is playing out on this very thread. I've only been a hardcore follower of exactly one politician and even then, I criticized Reagan for the mistakes I saw materialize over time. Regan managed to reverse the country's downward spiral that accelerated during the Carter years. Anyone following Biden, who makes Jimmy Carter seem wise by comparison, will have an equal, if not greater task and alienating potential supporters won't make such a task any easier. As usual, when Trump and Desantis are brought up, I'm especially entertained by the many, many posts over the past few years that DeSantis has ONLY been a governor for too short a period of time, so he must get more political seasoning before running for president. Those pushing that sentiment never address Trump's lack of governing experience but they do tout his business acumen, of which he has plenty; however, government exists primarily because of market failure, so its ways and means are vastly different. Even so, business principles may be successfully applied in governing, a big part of Trump's success in office. There is a lot to admire about Trump but the same goes for DeSantis, albeit in different ways. Ideally, neither one should be taking pot-shots at the other. Emerging communists, including those embedded in our legacy media, will do enough of that.

Very, very true, #15, and a valid point. However, if we remember back to the spring of 2020, the entire world had literally lost it’s mind and the Deep State and Global Cabal we’re riding high on creating unimaginable fear and panic. Even the coolest of heads and calmest of skeptics succumbed. As other countries were jumping on draconian policies immediately, Trump held for a little while. He also was the first to call for an end to any flights from China, much to howling of said state and cabal. We now know why, as they wanted the spread to happen. He also demanded that the first cruise ship be quarantined and his own Deputy Secretary of State countermanded him. He was undermined at every.single.turn. Once we were shut down, against the advice of his treacherous CDC, he opened after only 2 weeks, as other countries continued to cower. He realized what damage a shut down was doing and almost immediately (relatively speaking) reversed course. So yes, he was not God in this situation, and he did allow himself to be sold on the vaccines, which we now know we’re years in the planning and just waiting for the chance to detonate. So yes, I do agree with you, but we were all caught up in the greatest global crime ever committed against humanity.

Lest anyone forget, Rush Limbaugh was the victim of illicit software activism by a small number of people (ten-plus) threatening his sponsors that they would not shop at businesses advertising Rush Limbaugh. In 2014, Rush’s experts were able to discover the people involved as well as the individual founding the group from Media Matters for America. Rush’s experts identified ten of the top activists who were sending tens of thousands of tweets and other messages with one click. In a 24-day period, almost 70% of the targeted sources came from ten Twitter accounts.
The purpose of calling attention to the “Stop Rush Conspiracy” is to suggest that it is time to be mindful of politically motivated anti-Trump activists inundating this salon with a variety of negativity aimed at President Trump.

This is the exact behavior that I don't like about Trump.
DeSantis has been and is an excellent governor. You will notice that Trump hasn't gone after DeSantis on any policy issues. He's gone after him with smearing and name calling. Also, Trump drew first blood. Precisely because DeSantis "could" get in the way of Trump's coronation.
I hear, DeSantis should sit out 2024 and "let" Trump have it and then he can run in 2028 with Trump's support. Seriously??? Trump has been bashing DeSantis and we are supposed to believe that he's had a change of heart later?
Trump is owed nothing. He needs to WIN the nomination, not have it handed to him. That he expects it to be handed to him, makes him no better than Hillary in this regard. Whoever runs. Needs to convince me, that he or she is the best person for the job today.
