For some reason, Tuesday, January 31 is Ron DeSantis news day. Jazz had a post on the governor, then I, and now I again.
The prior two were purely political, though. This one is more substantive.
The press conference where DeSantis was asked about Trump’s criticism of him actually was about a policy announcement, and it’s a policy that should warm the cockles of any conservative’s heart: banning the use of DEI principles in Florida higher educational institutions. It’s a big deal because DEI and its associated ideological offshoots are a big problem.
The proposal is sweeping and sure to inspire a lot of whinging from the Left. Likely more than whinging;

Actor and producer Alec Baldwin has been criminally charged in connection with the 2021 fatal shooting on the set of the movie "Rust," the Santa Fe County, New Mexico, district attorney's office told CNN Tuesday.
The charges against Baldwin and the set's armorer, Hannah Guiterrez Reed, include two counts of involuntary manslaughter, the DA's office said. Attorneys for both defendants previously insisted their respective clients are innocent. District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies told CNN earlier this month she would charge Baldwin and the film's armorer with involuntary manslaughter, accusing them of failing to perform safety procedures that could have prevented the accident that resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Washington — The FBI searched the Penn Biden Center offices in mid-November, according to two sources familiar with the investigation, after lawyers for President Biden had found about 10 documents marked classified there on Nov. 2. The material originated from Mr. Biden's time as vice president.
It is not clear whether FBI personnel found any additional classified or presidential material during the mid-November sweep. Two sources told CBS News the search was conducted with the cooperation of Mr. Biden's representatives. A search warrant was not sought.

Although President Biden keeps insisting his economic programs are working great, there are plenty of troublesome signs indicating otherwise, including the all-important rate of consumer spending. Simple rule: if people are buying more things, it generally means they feel good about the state of their finances and the economy. When folks tighten their belts, however, it’s because they either simply don’t have enough money to purchase more than the essentials, or they’re holding on to their wallets because they fear for the future.
Consumer spending is often known as the “engine of the economy”—and it’s out of gas. The Wall Street Journal reports

There aren’t many things that Democrats and Republicans agree about these days but one of the few on which there seems to be general accord is that Kamala Harris is not a credible presidential candidate. Today the Washington Post published a story for which they spoke to more than a dozen Democrats who are worried about VP Harris’ role in the party’s future. The piece opens with an on-the-record comment from former Cobb County Democratic leader Jacquelyn Bettadapur:
Many Democrats, Bettadapur said, “don’t know enough about what she’s doing” — and, she added, “it doesn’t help that she’s not [that] adept as a communicator.”
Such concerns about Harris’s political strength were repeated

Washington - President Joe Biden informed Congress on Monday that he will end the twin national emergencies for addressing COVID-19 on May 11, as most of the world has returned closer to normalcy nearly three years after they were first declared.
The move to end the national emergency and public health emergency declarations would formally restructure the federal coronavirus response to treat the virus as an endemic threat to public health that can be managed through agencies’ normal authorities.
It comes as lawmakers have already ended elements of the emergencies that kept millions of Americans insured during the pandemic. Combined with the drawdown of most federal COVID-19 relief money,

Good. It’s a just verdict in a case that never should have been brought in the first place. A jury has acquitted Mark Houck of violating the FACE Act after an altercation near an abortion clinic so minor that local authorities refused to prosecute.
Don’t remember this case? You might remember when Merrick Garland and Christopher Wray sent dozens of FBI agents to raid his house over an argument: Local TV station WFMZ reported the verdict as well:
The jury has reached a verdict in the case of Mark Houck, the pro-life activist from Bucks County accused of violating the federal FACE Act when he pushed and injured a patient escort outside

Ron DeSantis set off a firestorm back in September after sending flights of illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, a self-described “sanctuary city” and playground for the leftwing elite. Immediately, DeSantis was accused of being criminally and civilly liable for giving people rides that they volunteered to take. A local sheriff opened an investigation, claiming the Florida governor broke the law by supposedly coercing the illegal immigrants. Meanwhile, Rep. Adam Schiff called for a House select committee on the matter.
Then there were the ridiculous lawsuits filed by illegal immigrants and government accountability groups.
It was all just so absurd. If the illegal immigrants volunteered

Donald Trump's role in hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels will be under the microscope of a grand jury today, it was reported on Monday afternoon.
Prosecutors in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office are laying out their case, which could potentially lead to criminal charges, according to the New York Times. She claims to have slept with Trump in 2006, which the former president denies. He was married to former First Lady Melania Trump, who had given birth to their son Barron less than six months before their brief fling. Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen previously admitted to paying $130,000

A California doctor who treated mortally wounded Ashli Babbitt after she was shot inside the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6, 2021, as she and others tried to gain access to the House Chamber, has been arrested by the FBI for his own alleged activity at the Capitol on that fateful day. As reported by the Daily Beast, Dr. Austin Harris, a board-certified cardiothoracic anesthesiologist from Southern California is facing both federal felony and misdemeanor charges related to the riot, an alleged attempt to stop the Electoral College certification of the 2020 presidential election results.
Harris was arrested on Jan. 25 in Van Nuys
