A nationwide shoplifting epidemic is crippling the finances of brick-and-mortar retailers, which warn that they may be forced to raise prices or even shutter stores in order to offset tens of billions of dollars in lost inventory.
The National Retail Foundation is estimating that it lost $94.5 billion last year due to “shrink” — an industry term that means lost inventory — which is being blamed primarily on shoplifting, according to the Wall Street Journal.

I was at Kohls in Toledo with my sister yesterday. When we pulled into the parking lot we saw 3 sheriff 's vehicles with lights activated and one local police car. We asked the clerk as we were paying for our merchandise (I know, novel idea, actually paying for your goods) what had happened, she told us shoplifting and alluded that it was a common occurrence. She told us quite gleefully that since it was so late in the day that by the time the culprits got downtown and booked, the staff that could process bail would be gone until after Christmas and they would be spending the holiday in jail. Not sure if this is true but I admit it warmed my heart. As we were leaving, the police were having their vehicle towed. I would like to think that what we were taught as children that crime doesn't pay still holds true. Merry Christmas!

At one time, Black, single, mothers were able to keep their young'uns in check. But now, with the ascendant Black culture and its wealthy athletes/musicians celebrating unrestricted sex and violence, that train left the station long ago. Add to it the lack of judicial consequences, I am uncertain there is a way forward without horrific violence.

Let's face it, it's not a bug. It's a feature. We are all meant to pay reparations in some way. This is how the fascists who rule us have decided it should be done.

Retail stores won't hire any sales clerks for the departments anymore. As a customer, if I have a question or want to make a purchase, I may hike the whole store multiple times to find a store associate. This is everywhere. Add to that the self check-outs, where no one watches to see if you are adding unscanned items to bags It is not rocket science to know that low wage hires are cheaper than the outrageous shoplifting losses

I see this as a setback for racial relations which until Obozo came along wasn't even an issue. Now with all of this shoplifting taking place, which is committed by blacks 99% percent of the time, racial relations have gone backwards to the 1960's days. Except now, the issue isn't that blacks are discriminated against just for being black. It's become the issue of entitlement. They feel they are entitled to all this stuff simply because they're black.

IMO, $94.5 bill is a gross underestimate. Just watch as retail chains wind up one store after another especially in 'racially marginal' areas.

Too bad this thread has turned racial. ALL races are guilty, and all races are victims. It's been going on since LONG before the Obama disaster, and will continue to escalate until laws are actually enforced, and retailers have the political GUTS to detain the perps. I saw a wonderful video years back where a thief was "trapped" in the vestibule of a store after security pushed a button locking the outer doors and, after he was unable to leave, also locked the entry doors. It was fun to watch.

Unless companies grow a spine and start doing what they used to do, which is to have strong, large men who will stop people who are stealing, with force, as needed, without apology, and prosecute them, this won't stop.
And another thing that must change is that prosecution of shoplifting at the $1 level needs to be done. This concept that stealing less than $1000 or some similar high amount is "not going to be prosecuted" is guaranteeing anarchy. We MUST enforce the laws, and not permit this theft by not prosecuting.
A huge portion of this is on state government, and even in Kansas, these idiots have made the "it's OK to steal this much" limit far too close to $1,000. I didn't know this until I discussed this with my retired police officer neighbor who worked "loss protection" for several large store chains after he retired from the police force. He mostly worked organized bunco - multi-person, well organized check and credit cart scam operations that moved from city to city stealing large sums of money.

Ironically, this "compassion" for the poor will lead to ubiquitous retail "deserts" by making brick-and-mortar facilities no longer viable. The business losses won't end, though; they will most likely just shift to less visible parts of the warehousing and distribution operations (becoming more systemic than today).

I was in a Walmart's self-checkout Thursday. I finally got near the front of the line I noticed this guy taking items from his cart and placing them directly into plastic bags without scanning them He got done and without paying, calmly pushed his cart out he door! The checkout lady finally saw him and called after him without getting the groceries back.
General Dollar's self-checkout is never operational due to this problem.

The “woke” progressive movement that controls the leftist Democrat Party these days gave “the community” a free pass to shoplift all over America. Stop those subversive entities, enforce the law, and the shoplifting will be greatly reduced.

#13 - "I'm sorry to see this thread go racial". Look, a drug using, felon, white shoplifter resists police and gets taken down with necessary force. You are standing there. What do you think? "That's it officers, take take piece of trash off the streets". Then you calmly head home to a nice dinner. Second scenario: A shoplifter that resembles George Floyd gets the same treatment as the first shoplifter. Quickly, a mob forms and things go down hill fast. Police call for back up, and we have a major incident. At this point you are wisely running for your car. Of course it's racial. The store managers and owners are afraid of law suits. Many time the police are afraid of intervening for fear of losing jobs, pensions or their lives. But the Big fear that city officials have is widespread violence, rioting, arson and looting. If this shoplifting problem was limited to white thieves it would be easier to solve. Enforce the laws and stiff penalties. But this problem is much more complex.

Umm, it's more of a real problem for customers (who cares about them? Not the media).
Retailers simply up their prices to cover theft. Retailers and law-non-enforcement do nothing to prevent or deter thieves. And manufacturers force customers to put up with huge bubble packs that create mountains of packaging waste in landfills.
Guess what? Ordering merchandise from Ebay (NEVER from Amazon the commie woke corp) bypasses the retail thievery racket to a great degree.

The government allowed & encouraged! Millions in theft in California alone goes unreported, as retailers don’t go to extra expense to get thieves reported because no action will be taken. The numbers are much higher, and every single one of us pays for this, every day.
