Tough Tuesday: Manchin suffers two major
blows to his power

Original Article

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) suffered setbacks on Tuesday night, losing a major policy bill that was set to be included in the annual defense legislation, as well as watching his outsize influence over the party wither away after Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) won reelection in Georgia. Over the last two years, Manchin has acted as somewhat of a gatekeeper within his party, often using his vote to negotiate and boost his own priorities in exchange for support on a Democratic bill.

Comments:

Joe's finding the going a little rougher now that he's not the lynchpin in the Senate. Payback is generally swift. Wonder what basement office Schumer will assign him. Will he switch parties? Could happen. Shades of Jumpin' Jim Jeffords!

Manchin is probably going to lose if he runs as a Democrat in 2024. Now maybe he's planning to retire and not seek another term, so he doesn't care. If Walker had won, I would have expected Manchin to switch parties. But now, he probably will stay put. Although moving now brings the Senate back to 50-50. If Manchin wants to run in 2024, running as a Republican might be a wise move.

How does Manchin remain a D? The party that wrote the law requiring Epi Pens mandatory in schools and public buildings while Manchin’s daughter was a big wig at the company that made them, and increased their cost from affordable to extortionate upon the bill’s passing? The party that made his family multi-generational wealthy? That guys motives are suspect to you? Here’s a hint……ANYONE with a D after their name will kill you and walk on your body for a nickel. Joe, besides retirement, you have one move left. There is a certain senator from AZ who is also getting bad treatment from the Dems. The two of you changing teams shifts the balance of power in the senate, wipes the smirk off of Biden's face, and gives Schumer back the knife he stuck in your back.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin went off on the “bonehead” Congressional Republicans threatening to derail Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) bid to be the next speaker of the House. Levin used his show on Tuesday to talk about how the Republican Party’s slim majority in the House of Representatives may cause a struggle for McCarthy to get the votes he needs to succeed Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Hard-right members of the Congressional GOP have publicly opposed McCarthy’s bid for the speakership, so the House minority leader is currently trying to bring these factions in line and secure the 218 votes he needs.

Former U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan said on a Sunday morning news program that he is a "never-again-Trumper" and that Donald Trump is "unelectable." Ryan, a Republican who represented Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District for 20 years, was speaker of the House from 2015 to 2019. He told correspondent Jonathan Karl on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" in the wake of Trump's announced run that Republicans would lose if they backed Trump for president in 2024. “We get past Trump, we start winning elections. We stick with Trump, we keep losing elections. That’s just how I see it," Ryan said.

Democrats are napping peacefully through the US-Mexico “border” crisis they engineered. Perhaps these data will snap them from their slumber: The US Department of Homeland Security reports that the Mexican cartels’ income from smuggling illegal migrants into America has soared from $500 million in 2018 to $13 billion this year — up 2,500%. If these criminals merged into a corporation, their 2022 gross revenues would rival that of — are you sitting down? — Fox Corporation. Fox News Channel’s parent company earned $12.91 billion in the year ended June 30, 2021, and $13.97 billion 12 months later.

America’s national debt has climbed north of $31 trillion for the first time, a milestone that comes at a time of historically high inflation, rising interest rates and growing economic uncertainty. The nation’s total public debt outstanding closed at $31.1 trillion on Monday, according to Treasury Department data published Tuesday. The US government went on a borrowing spree during the Covid-19 pandemic to help shore up the nation’s economy as the deadly virus upended lives, labor markets and supply chains. Outstanding debt has climbed nearly $8 trillion since the beginning of 2020. And it has jumped by $1 trillion in just eight months.

Hein Goemans grew up in Amsterdam in the nineteen-sixties and seventies, surrounded by stories and memories of the Second World War. His father was Jewish and had hidden “under the floorboards,” as he put it, during the Nazi occupation. When Goemans came to the United States to study international relations, he recalled being asked in one class about his most formative personal experience of international relations. He said that it was the Second World War. The other students objected that this wasn’t personal enough. But it was very personal for Goemans.

In a little noted trend, law enforcement agencies at every level of government are increasingly buying data from private, third-party data brokers on Americans' phone and internet activities in order to track them, often without a warrant. In his new book released today, Breaking History: A White House Memoir, Kushner wrote that unlike in other campaigns, the candidate decided to lead the search for a running mate, and Trump initially settled on Pence, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Kushner, who was the unofficial campaign manager, wrote that all three fit with Trump’s goal of ignoring the Washington “elite” and reaching out to blue-collar voters.

Why Does the GOP Elite Hate Its Own Base? 30 replies

It is one of the most bitter and tragic ironies of our contemporary politics that the leadership of one of America’s two major political parties, the Republican Party, utterly despises that party’s very own voting base. The GOP elite’s scorn for its own voters has, at this point, been a long time in the making. The trend accelerated during the 2009-2011 rise of the Tea Party, a grassroots movement fueled by constitutionalism and anti-elite populism. The crustier elements of the Republican establishment ran as far away as possible from the Tea Party, and the 2012 presidential coronation of private equity plutocrat Mitt Romney effectively killed the movement.

Team Trump has sometimes compared former President Donald Trump's current quest for a non-sequential second term to two-term President Grover Cleveland's similar three election bids. Cleveland remains our only elected president (1884) to have lost a reelection bid (1888) -- in a disputed vote -- only to be reelected four years later in 1892. Yet Trump seems determined instead to follow a different, and bullheaded, Teddy Roosevelt model. Roosevelt left the presidency in 1908, sat out four years, and then lost a reelection bid in 1912, split and alienated the Republican Party, and ensured the election of the progressive Woodrow Wilson.

The Georgia runoff is over. Raphael Warnock came out on top (as expected). And Republicans are once again running the “quality candidate” canard as the reason for Herschel Walker’s loss (in addition to the overblown, overused, Trump scapegoat). Yet despite the fact Walker was outspent by Warnock nearly 3 to 1 (Warnock spent $126,232,942 to Walker’s $48,455,356), Walker performed remarkably well, netting 48.6 percent of the vote to Warnock’s 51.4 percent. This as Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp only came out in full force for Walker after he coasted to reelection in November (loaning his field organizing team to the Senate Leadership Fund — the GOP’s Senate super PAC which backed Walker).
