Tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, the “Saxophone Colossus” who was schooled by bebop’s legends as a prized sideman and became their peer as a formidable leader, improviser and composer, has died, according to a social media post from his family. No cause of death was cited; he was 95. Sporting a burly tone, a tart sense of instrumental humor and keen melodic and harmonic ingenuity, Rollins was acknowledged as a jazz voice as groundbreaking as that of his friend and contemporary John Coltrane, with whom he unforgettably locked horns on “Tenor Madness” in 1956. He penned such now-standard entries in the jazz book as

Comments:

Sonny Rollins was one of the all time jazz greats. His music will survive because it was so good.

Here's the first track from Rollins's Saxophone Colossus. The great Max Roach is on drums. In 1949 when he was still a teenager, Rollins began recording with the finest jazz players of the day. Just about everybody who's anybody in jazz played with Sonny Rollins at some point. He left us so much great music to enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdakJqKPRDE ("St. Thomas" -- Sonny Rollins)

"Climate change’s worst-case scenario is officially canceled," young adult infotainment site Vox finally admitted this weekend, causing progressive heads to explode, from the writing staff to its readership. "You’ve probably never heard of the term 'RCP 8.5' — the highest-emission scenario used by climate scientists to project the planet’s future," Vox's Bryan Walsh reported. "But if you’ve read about climate change, you’ve seen the numbers and nightmarish outcomes it produced: 4°C of warming by 2100, sometimes 5°C, sea level rising multiple feet,

Carl von Clausewitz developed the idea of “center of gravity” for war strategy. A center of gravity can be key people, things, or locations that are so vital to an enemy’s ability to conduct a war that their elimination is the best way to completely defeat them. Iran is a theocratic monarchy controlled by a single Islamic mullah, titled ayatollah. There are also 80+ other high mullahs who elect that leader, though they basically select a son of the previous ayatollah. Iran’s center of gravity is the ayatollah and the higher level mullahs, plus all the other Iranian mullahs to a lesser degree.

Trump's Anti-Weaponization Fund: The Facts 2 replies

President Trump and sons sued the federal government for its unauthorized release of their tax returns to the public. A settlement resulted, and it was agreed that a $1.8 billion fund would be established to compensate people (but not the Trumps) who were prosecuted on the basis of their political convictions. This Anti-Weaponization fund will be available to anyone making a credible and verified claim, regardless of party or politics. Even James Comey and Letitia James will have the opportunity to file claims. However, it is likely that most claims will be made by people who were excessively prosecuted for their actions in or near the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Memorial Day exists for one reason: to honor the men and women who died in service to this country. It is a solemn, sacred day, the one day a year we set aside not to celebrate veterans broadly, but to mourn and remember those who gave everything. Apparently, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey had other plans. On Monday, Frey took to X and posted a lengthy, heartfelt tribute — not to a fallen soldier, but to George Floyd, since May 25 is also the sixth anniversary of when Floyd died. Patriotic Americans were visiting cemeteries, laying wreaths, and reflecting on the price of freedom.

U.S. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon directed the preservation of ballots and election-related records in Maryland, after President Donald Trump called for a Justice Department investigation into the state's mail-in ballot system. On May, 18, Trump ordered acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and the Justice Department to investigate the matter. Maryland election officials claim that thousands of voters received 500,000 fake and fraudulent mail-in ballots to go out, allegedly due to a printing and mailing error. The issue affected mail-in ballots sent before May 14, according to the Maryland State Board of Elections. Officials said some voters received ballot packets intended for different voter segments or the wrong party

Bob Dylan celebrates his 85th birthday today. When he snagged the Nobel Prize for Literature a few years ago, I pulled out all the stops by posting a big set of my favorite covers of his songs. I don’t have any stops left to pull, but I’m adding another cover or four (again) this year in honor of his milestone birthday today. Dylan is first and foremost a songwriter. See, for example, Raymond Foye’s interview with Clinton Heylin about his deep dive into the Dylan archive. Dylan somehow absorbed the folk, rock, country, and blues traditions as a precocious young man growing up in Hibbing and then recapitulated them

Today is the birthday of Minnesota native son Bob Dylan. He turns the ripe old age of 85. It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there. I want to celebrate him as long we’re both still around to enjoy the occasion. He is a remarkable artist, self-invented, deep in the American grain. A few years back I visited Dylan’s old home at 2425 7th Avenue East in Hibbing. The house is a small two-story residence with a one-car attached garage on the side. The house is exactly two blocks from Hibbing High School, Dylan’s alma mater. A Dylan fan must be somewhere in the chain of title.

John F. Kennedy wrote his Pulitzer Prize–winning tome "Profiles in Courage" in 1956, wherein he discussed eight U.S. senators who took brave stands despite political risks. They believed it was the right thing to do. If the book is ever updated, it's unlikely former President Joe Biden would be included. He recently told his former chief of staff, Ron Klain, that he has made his decision on endorsing a candidate in one of the most pivotal election battles in the nation — the gubernatorial race in the union’s most populous state, California. His answer? Nobody. This was our commander-in-chief barely 16 months ago, yet now he doesn’t have the — cough — guts

Well, that certainly didn't take long. Within minutes of U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche's announcement of murder charges against Cuban leader Raúl Castro, leftist groups immediately leaped to the withered old commie's defense, and within nine minutes, according to one account, started fundraising. This, again, just goes to show that there is no communist dictator so vile that the American and international left won't support him. On Saturday, Fox News released the first in a multi-part investigation into these groups and what they are doing. Just nine minutes after U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche announced murder charges against Cuban leader Raúl Castro for the 1996 shootdown

Axios reported Monday that Warren, one of the most influential figures in the progressive movement, is being courted publicly and privately by Democrats eyeing 2028 presidential bids, a sign potential candidates are trying to strengthen their standing with the party’s far-left flank. Warren lost her White House bid in 2020, but Axios noted she later played a major role in shaping President Joe Biden’s administration by helping place allies in his administration. Her moves have also drawn concern from some centrist Democrats, who worry she has

"I’m totally in favor of trans athletes in high school," Steyer told "I've Had It" podcast host Jennifer Welch. "When you understand the vulnerability, the stress, the danger of being a trans kid, and you understand almost half of them try to commit suicide, then you think, 'We’re gonna punish those kids, we’re gonna cut them off from team sport.' It’s like, no we’re not."

Once again, the U.S. Senate is on vacation. This group barely works, and when they are in session, they accomplish practically nothing. Since the start of President Donald Trump’s second term, Congress has passed only one major piece of legislation. While the “One Big Beautiful Bill” was a notable accomplishment, it should not have been the only legislative victory for the Republican Congress. During the same period of President Joe Biden’s administration, a Democratic-led Congress passed four major pieces of legislation: the American Rescue Plan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, the CHIPS Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act. Of course, these bills harmed our economy, propelled wasteful spending, and funded ludicrous

Canada's prairie provinces, including Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, are in some ways more like the western United States than the rest of Canada. They are more independent, more reliant on agriculture and the energy sector, with lower populations, and with a population more inclined to conservative viewpoints. For some time now, the energy-rich province of Alberta has been making noises about seceding from Canada. Now, it looks like that may come to a vote. The Telegraph's Michael Taube has some thoughts on that.

Wildfires are down in North America as well as every other continent. Hurricanes and other extreme weather events are milder and less frequent, and fatalities due to it are far fewer. The snows of Kilimanjaro are still there. Manhattan is not under water. In fact, the seas have barely risen. The Netherlands are no more nether than ever, and the seas would have to rise another 5,280 feet to reach the Mile High City of Denver.

When the U.S. sends proposed details, the difficulty in reaching the supreme leader means there can be a long delay
