I'm not an optimist, per se. But when it comes to America, I'm an upbeat patriot. I believe wholeheartedly in Americans, the greatness of this country and the strength of our democratic republic – especially when it comes to elections. But I might be alone in this. According to a March NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll, Americans' confidence in fair elections has actually dropped: 34% of Americans have little or no confidence in their elections, up from 24% since 2024. This is why it's so disappointing to see Congress fail over and over to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, also known as the SAVE Act or the SAVE America Act.

Earlier this week, the Missouri Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC) suspended one of its ordained elders, Rev. Stephanie Remington, after learning that she worked for Jeffrey Epstein from 2018-2019.
Epstein, a convicted sex offender and suspected sex trafficker, died in his jail cell on Aug. 10, 2019, in what officials ruled a suicide by hanging. The high-profile financier was arrested a month earlier and charged with sex trafficking. Remington worked for Epstein as an administrative assistant and later as a temporary property manager for his private island.

Fourteen days into Operation Epic Fury, the most consequential American military campaign in the Middle East since the invasion of Iraq, the Trump administration has yet to say what victory will actually look like. The president has variously toggled between declaring Iran has “practically nothing left,” indicating that the conflict would be right around the corner, and telling Kentucky rally-goers that we need to “finish the job” so that we don’t have to go back and do this all over again later down the road.
The campaign is succeeding, but that will ultimately make little difference if we stop before the job is done.

With the dust literally settling and an acknowledgment that the situation could unexpectedly change, Operation Epic Fury appears to be a success. The U.S. and Israel now control the skies and the seas, and Trump will facilitate the transition to new leadership. In its final death throes, the old regime has shot off missiles every which way, hitting random areas, with diminishing prospects of serious retaliation. Altogether, based on how the campaign has progressed, Iran is on its way to becoming a stable and prosperous republic, or at least a tolerable autocracy that doesn’t sponsor terrorism.

The most prominent objections are that President Donald Trump acted without first explaining his objectives; that he failed to secure Congressional authorization or the support of America’s international allies; and that he refused to exhaust diplomacy before choosing military options.

Until last year, for some 46 years, Iran enjoyed a North Korea-like reputation in the heart of the Middle East: always unpredictable, reckless, dangerous, inevitably to be nuclear, self-destructive, and nihilistic. All that said, was it really ever all that formidable? The mullahs came into power after the removal of the Shah and, subsequently, the interim secular socialists. They did so by taking American hostages, murdering opponents, executing former supporters, and transforming the most secular and modern of the Middle East Muslim nations into the most medieval that routinely hung homosexuals, adulterers, and almost anyone who questioned the authority of the ayatollahs.

If all the fancy degrees, voluminous curricula vitae, and lofty career positions have failed to instill a resilient modicum of self-esteem, then perhaps all those things are not the true measures of a person’s worth.
