NEW YORK - A new bill could push New York City’s minimum wage as high as $30 an hour, setting the stage for one of the highest local pay floors in the nation. What we know: The proposal would require employers to pay workers at least $25 an hour if they provide qualifying benefits and $30 an hour if they do not. Lawmakers would apply the same standards to independent contractors, including those who perform work through digital labor platforms. Dig deeper: The bill directs the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to adjust the minimum pay rates each year

NEW YORK -- Both chambers of the state Legislature agree on increasing taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations, which Gov. Kathy Hochul has said she will not support. The one-house budget resolutions could raise roughly $5 billion more for the city through a mix of taxes and other state aid. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has made tax increases on the wealthiest a signature proposal, said he agrees with the move. Though their proposed tax increases are smaller than Mamdani's, they are both calling to raise a variety of taxes, including the personal income tax and the state's top corporate

Republican Clayton Fuller and Democrat Shawn Harris are advancing to a runoff in the special election to serve out the remainder of former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s term in Congress. Fuller, a local prosecutor and Air National Guard member, is heavily favored in the April 7 runoff in the deep-red northwest Georgia district. He overcame a crowded field of Republican competitors with the help of an endorsement from President Donald Trump in early February. (Snip) The election was widely expected to head into a runoff given the high volume of interest in the seat. The crowded special election drew interest

After nearly half a century, Yamaha Motor Co. is moving its U.S. headquarters from California to Georgia. On Tuesday, Gov. Brian Kemp announced that the Japanese company would be relocating to Kennesaw in the next few years. The company said that the relocation will begin at the end of 2026 and last until the end of 2028. The company's headquarters in Cypress, California, had been its home since 1979 after Yamaha acquired the land the year before. The manufacturer of ATVs, boat engines, personal watercraft, and other motorized products had already moved its marine business to Kennesaw in 1999 and

Officials say Operation Metro Surge cost Minneapolis over $203 million in impact. Many neighborhoods, like Lyn-Lake, are still feeling the effects. "It's definitely a taxing time," said Miguel Hernandez, the owner of Lito's Burritos on the corner of Lake and Bryant. Hernandez only opened the restaurant in November. (Snip) "It only takes one sighting in front of your building or supermarket, that's going to clear out your night," said Hernandez. "All of a sudden no one's coming by because they're scared to." "It was day to day on how people felt," Hernandez added, saying he's definitely not the only one

His “Glory Days” with some fans have passed him by. Bruce Springsteen’s fans are furious over the legendary rocker’s astronomical ticket prices for his upcoming “Land of Hope and Dreams” tour, which critics argue are unaffordable for his “working class fanbase” and contradict his Man of the People image. The woke New Jersey billionaire is pushing the anti-President Trump “No Kings” agenda in his advertising campaign for the 20-date tour with his E Street Band — but is ironically charging prices fit for royalty, at up to $3,000 a ticket. “I couldn’t be more disappointed in the Boss … how

The Obama Presidential Center’s grand opening celebrations will begin in June, almost five years after its groundbreaking in Chicago, the Obama Foundation announced. The center -- a museum and public gathering space in honor of former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama -- will be dedicated on Thursday, June 18, and the campus will open to the public the next day, the foundation said in a press release. The celebrations will run through June 21 "with a series of events that bring together the changemakers, community members, volunteers, and supporters who made the Obama presidency a reality and

Kristi Noem's exit from the Department of Homeland Security had barely been confirmed when one Democrat had already signed up to support her replacement. Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman moved to back his Senate colleague Markwayne Mullin for the top DHS job almost immediately — earning the vicious fury of Democrats who are growing tired of his independence. 'I'm not sure how many fellow Democrats will vote to support our colleague @SenMullin as the next DHS Secretary, but I am AYE,' Fetterman posted on X. Matt McDermott, a Democratic Strategist, responded to Fetterman's post, commenting, 'This is so embarrassing, man. Just resign.'

President Donald Trump on Thursday said Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin will replace Kristi Noem as Department of Homeland Security secretary. Trump made the announcement on social media Thursday afternoon saying he was "pleased to announce that the Highly Respected United States Senator from the Great State of Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin, will become the United States Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), effective March 31, 2026." "The current Secretary, Kristi Noem, who has served us well, and has had numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!), will be moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, our new

New York, New York - Texas state representative James Talarico is facing renewed criticism after past remarks about immigration resurfaced online following his recent Democratic primary victory in the race for the U.S. Senate in Texas. In comments circulating on social media, Talarico compared the nation’s southern border to a “front porch,” saying it should function like a “giant welcome mat.” The statement has sparked backlash from critics who argue the remark signals support for more open immigration policies at a time when border security remains a central issue in national politics. Talarico, a progressive Democrat who has represented parts

DALLAS — Dallas County has extended voting hours two hours to 9 p.m. on Election Day for Democratic voters, a court order shows, as new restrictions have led to many residents getting turned away from polling places. Voters and poll workers have reported confusion as a new process is restricting where voters can vote on Election Day. For example, election judges at Lee McShan Elementary in Dallas said they've seen a lot of people trying to vote at the wrong precinct. Two people living in the same home near Harry S. Moss Park may vote in two different places. Democrats must

When California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) took the stage before a predominantly Black audience in Georgia recently, something revealing happened. He leaned into the microphone and offered his credentials for relatability: a 960 SAT score, a confession that he can’t read well, and a childhood sustained by frozen lasagna and mac and cheese. (Snip) They called it “competence downshift.” Analyzing 25 years of presidential campaign speeches — 74 speeches delivered to mostly white or mostly minority audiences — they found that Democratic candidates consistently used fewer words associated with intelligence, ability, and status when addressing Black crowds. Republican candidates showed
