Democrats in the Washington state legislature are pushing a proposal that establishes a list of demographic groups that are presumed to be “socially disadvantaged” for the purposes of state business certification. Based on the breadth of those categories, roughly 70 percent of Washington state residents would fall under the bill’s definition of “socially disadvantaged.” Under existing statute, the Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises (OMWBE) defines a “socially disadvantaged individual” as someone who has experienced racial or ethnic prejudice or cultural bias within American society due to group identity, stemming from circumstances beyond the individual’s control. The agency may also determine social disadvantage on a case-by-case basis.

The British countryside is in the midst of a diversity drive after a government-commissioned report found it was too 'white' and 'middle-class'. Officials charged with managing some of the country's best known beauty spots have laid out a series of proposals aimed at attracting minorities. In the wake of the report, officials representing National Landscapes - including the Cotswolds and Chilterns - have now published a series of management plans that detail their proposals to attract more minority communities. The Chiltern National Landscape will launch an outreach programme in Luton and High Wycombe targeted at Muslims.

Chloe Day School, a “progressive” public preschool in New York City, staged an anti-ICE protest and held anti-Trump signs in the classroom.
“The Chloe Day School and Wellness Center is a public preschool and wellness space that takes a progressive approach to learning, child development, and family empowerment,” Chloe Day School says.
“We believe children are naturally curious and capable of making meaningful discoveries when given opportunities to explore, play, and engage with their environment,” the school says.
“Children thrive best when supported by strong and healthy families,” they said.

Did you know the Biden administration worked overtime in its final days to try to stop you from buying things in bulk at the prices you love? It pushed aggressive lawsuits that threatened to make volume discounts — the precise reason Costco, Walmart, and similar stores can offer everyday low prices on all your household needs —much harder to come by. Now, thanks to actions ramping up this week, President Trump's Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson is positioned to shut down this nonsense once and for all.
In the chaotic closing stretch of the Biden-Harris FTC, Chair Lina Khan — who went on to become

Democrat Christian Menefee, a former attorney for Houston’s Harris County, has won a special congressional election in a left-leaning congressional district in Texas, which has been vacant for nearly a year.
The Associated Press reports that Menefee defeated former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards, a fellow Democrat, in Saturday’s runoff election to fill the seat left vacant when Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner died last March.
Menefee’s victory means the Republicans’ razor-thin House majority — they currently control the chamber 218-213 — will shrink by one seat when Menefee is sworn in to Congress.

The federal government is set to end Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, for Haitians on Feb. 3.
This means some Haitian immigrants living in Springfield, Ohio, will no longer be able to work or live legally in the United States. City officials estimate that about 12,000-15,000 Haitian people live in Springfield.
A U.S. District Court judge is currently reviewing whether to suspend the expiration of TPS for Haitians.
TPS is granted by the Department of Homeland Security for people from specific countries deemed unsafe, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website.
The expiration of TPS is fueling concerns in Springfield

California drivers and Republican legislators are furious over a Democrat-led proposal that could see motorists taxed for each mile they drive.
With the state staring down a budget deficit in the billions and more Californians switching to electric vehicles, Democratic lawmakers are searching for new ways to shore up declining gas tax revenue.
Californians pay the second-highest gas price in the nation behind only Hawaii. In January, the average price was $4.23 per gallon, according to the American Automobile Association. On Thursday, state legislators advanced Democrat Lori Wilson’s bill, AB 1421, which would direct the California Transportation Commission and the state Transportation Agency to continue studying options for a mileage-based tax,

Democratic Texas Senate candidate Taylor Rehmet defeated Trump-endorsed Republican Leigh Wambsganss in a Saturday special election for a seat the president won by double digits three times, multiple outlets project.
Rehmet, a union leader and Air Force veteran, won 57.2% of the vote compared to Wambsganss’s 42.8%, with 95% of the vote in, according to The Associated Press (AP). Texas Senate District 9 — which is entirely based in Tarrant County and includes parts of Fort Worth and Arlington — was last represented by former Republican State Sen. Kelly Hancock who resigned in June 2025 to work for the Texas Comptroller’s Office. Under its current boundaries, District 9 voted for Trump

We've been following the ongoing efforts to back away from the federal government funding for questionable work done involving research using, among other critters, dogs and cats as subjects. This is a matter that hits close to the hearts of a lot of folks, as dogs and cats are our most popular pets; people understandably don't want to see them used as test subjects. On Thursday, on X, investigative reporter, podcaster and activist Laura Loomer reported that the fiscal year 2026 federal budget contains no new funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct any research on dog and cat subjects.

Remember the ‘Obamaphone’ lady? The Obamaphone Lady, who as far as we know hasn’t been otherwise identified, is a middle-aged black woman with a loud, gravelly voice. She exuberantly explains why she supports President Obama’s re-election: “Everybody in Cleveland [unintelligible] minority got Obama phone! Keep Obama in president, you know? He gave us a phone!”
The ‘Obamaphone’ program is more officially known as the ‘Lifeline’ program, subsidized phones for the ‘disadvantaged’ at taxpayer expense.
Who’s paying for it? You are. When you see various fees on your bill like the ‘Universal Service Fund (USF) Fee’,

Republicans are clinging to a razor-thin 218-213 House majority.
And the GOP's margin will shrink even further after a special congressional election this weekend to fill the seat in a Democrat-dominated district that has been vacant for nearly a year.
That's because the two candidates in Saturday's runoff election in Texas' 18th Congressional District are both Democrats.
Voters in the district, which is anchored by downtown Houston and surrounding areas, head to the polls to choose a successor to fill the seat left vacant when Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner died last March. Sylvester, a former longtime state lawmaker, served two terms as Houston mayor before winning election to Congress in 2024, succeeding

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is looking to recruit a new “top cop” to police nonprofits that “use and abuse” their charity status to dodge taxes, The Post has learned.
Bessent wants to appoint a new senior official at the Treasury Department to scrutinize the finances of charities that engage in excessive political activities, lobbying, or even fraud.
The secretary’s recently departed chief of staff, Michael Friedman, was tasked with drumming up some names for possible candidates before he left to join the SEC three weeks ago. It comes after The Post broke the news in December that the Treasury Department was eyeing a crackdown on nonprofit organizations that enjoy cushy tax-free benefits
