Mass attacks: we're on our own

The attacks at Bondi Beach, Australia and at Brown University remind us western democracies remain uniquely vulnerable to terrorist attacks, even terrorists armed with common firearms rather than the automatic weapons employed in the Middle East and other hot spots. In Australia at least 16, aged 10-87, were killed and some 40 were wounded at a “Chanukah by the Sea” celebration. Yes, the victims were largely Jews, and amazingly, the police think it was terrorism. In this case, the two killers were apparently not “known wolves.” Naveed Akram, 24, and his 50-year-old father, Sajid, allegedly stormed the family-friendly Chanukah by the Sea event

Comments:

We are almost always 'on our own'.
In Australia, self-defense is an invalid reason to request a permit to own one of a few kinds of guns. NO carrying of guns is permitted by law abiding citizens, EVER in Australia. Same in Brown University, illegal to carry a gun for self defense. In Kansas, universities cannot block concealed carry on campus, and any adult who can legally own a handgun in Kansas can carry it concealed, no permit required. I have had a permit for many years, better when I am traveling.

Left wing politicians have created an atmosphere where enforcement authorities are deathly afraid to use force especially if the perp is from a politically protected class - black or Muslim. And these same people are hell bent on taking firearms away from law abiding civilians. THAT has increased the risk by order of magnitude.

Something doesn't add up...a shotgun and bolt action rifle??? And that many were killed and injured? What were the police doing, standing around with their hands in their pockets???

Re #4, the police did nothing for at least 10 minutes, some sources say 15 minutes. These guys had shoulder bags full of shotgun shells and kept reloading and shooting. Each shotgun shell, assuming they were loaded with buckshot, will have between 9 and 24 pellets in the 1/4" to 1/3" range, so MANY people can be wounded by even one single shotgun shell. They apparently fired dozens of shells. Bolt action rifle cartridges are often designed to kill elk and deer sized animals very quickly and cleanly, will do the same on humans. My bet is that the shotguns accounted mostly for the wounded and the rifle mostly for the dead. All the police I saw were porky females running around looking useless well after the fact. Apparently they didn't interfere for far too long. Eventually they shot and killed one, wounded the other after a brave bystander disarmed him.

The cops simply could not believe that someone would break the gun laws. They were too surprised to do anything.

Federal prosecutors and Homeland Security officials vowed zero tolerance for violence against law enforcement after a criminal illegal alien from Mexico was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a brutal assault on an ICE officer in Wichita, Kansas. The sentence is the maximum penalty allowed for this charge under federal law. U.S. Attorney for the District of Kansas Ryan A. Kriegshauser condemned the attack as “completely unacceptable” and praised the courage of officers who risk their lives daily. At the same time, Homeland Security Investigations Kansas City Special Agent in Charge Charles J. Cole underscored that anyone who lays a hand on federal agents will face swift and severe justice.

In the aftermath of the massive Feeding Our Future scandal and broader allegations of systemic fraud in Minnesota’s social programs, a troubling theme has emerged: accusations of racism repeatedly used to deflect scrutiny, intimidate investigators and stall accountability. Rumors and reports of fraud in Minneapolis, primarily within the city’s exploding Somali community, have been circulating for at least a decade, but criticism of the fraud has been largely dismissed by elected Democrats as "racist" or being underpinned by animosity toward foreigners. News stories focused on Somali fraudsters in recent years were shot down as "racist."

American actions involving Venezuela have stirred up a flurry of theories and narratives around the United States’ strategic intentions. Some theories highlight apparent contradictions between rhetoric and policy, such as President Trump’s pardons of major drug-traffickers despite his public anti-drug stance. Others frame potential U.S. military threats against Venezuela as being driven primarily by America’s dependence on oil. Additional narratives have revived allegations of Venezuelan interference in U.S. elections, including claims from a former Maduro regime official about a “narco-terrorist war” against the United States.

Two Virginia twin brothers were arrested for their alleged roles in deleting government databases hosted by a federal government contractor, the Justice Department announced on Wednesday. Muneeb and Sohaib Akhter, both 34, were indicted last month for allegedly conspiring to delete databases used to store U.S. government information, the DOJ said in a news release. The arrests come after Bloomberg News reported in May how the brothers allegedly compromised data across several agencies, including the IRS and the General Services Administration.

A North Dakota judge has ordered Greenpeace to pay damages of $345 million, reducing an earlier jury award after it found the environmental group and related entities liable for defamation and other claims in connection with protests of an oil pipeline nearly a decade ago. The new amount is roughly half the $667 million that a jury previously awarded to the pipeline company that brought the claims, Dallas-based Energy Transfer and subsidiary Dakota Access. Greenpeace had asked State District Judge James Gion to rule in its favor on various claims before recalculating the damages. In granting some requests, the judge cited no evidence to review or duplicative damages

There have been countless examples of liberalism being a mental disorder. Here is another one: Two researchers from Western Michigan University have written a paper [snip] The paper argues that intentionally spreading alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), a potentially life-threatening allergy to red meat, could be not only morally defensible, but perhaps even necessary, in order to reduce animal suffering and combat climate change. Here are the authors, Parker Crutchfield and Blake Hereth, in their own words: Because promoting tickborne AGS prevents something bad from happening, doesn’t violate anyone’s rights, and promotes virtuous action or character, it follows that promoting tickborne AGS is strongly pro tanto (‘to that extent’) morally obligatory.

ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) Global Affairs Editor Laura Tingle raised eyebrows during a recent podcast where she—not once, but twice—declared that the targeted terrorist attack at Sydney's Bondi Beach on Sunday evening was not motivated by religion. The target of the attack was a Hanukkah celebration to mark the first night of the Jewish holiday. The alleged perpetrators, as noted by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who himself would love nothing more than to shift the blame onto inanimate guns, were inspired by ISIS. The attackers had an ISIS flag on the window of their car.

Legally armed civilians, we’re told, pose a major danger. Leon did, however, put the Trump administration on “fair notice” that it should be prepared to remove below-ground changes if it were to alter the above-ground structure.
