Florida public school students will learn the “brutal realities” of communism under new standards the State Board of Education adopted Thursday, the state’s education chief said. The “History of Communism” will be integrated into the state’s social studies standards and implemented in the 2026-2027 school year. It’s the result of a 2024 law signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis that mandates students be taught the “consequences of communism” and to prepare them to “withstand indoctrination on communism at colleges and universities.” “With the resurgence of communist ideologies across the United States and throughout the world, it is more important than ever for students to understand the catastrophic failures and human

In spring 1966, I was in eighth grade. The principal of our elementary school in Lake County Illinois, Mr. Kroll, conducted a one-week long class just before our graduation to high school titled, "Propaganda and Communism". Mr. Kroll was a WWII survivor from the European theatre. He set out to teach us kids the evil of socialism and communism because he saw these with his own eyes. At one point near the end of the course, he looked each of us kids straight in the eye and said that WWII is not over, it is only a pause and that new communists in America will eventually emerge. And as we see, they are here now. I rather doubt that school principals who followed him were that passionate about the future for America. I will never forget his devotion to our Constitutional Republic.

Sad that this was necessary. At one time pretty much everyone knew communism was bad. Then those 60's hippies got into academia and began the damage, which continues to this day.

I attended HS in a small city in central Florida. In the late 1960s a required course for ALL HS students was "Americanism versus Communism". It was an excellent course, and should be revived today.

Why doesn't any school in America teach capitalism? Why doesn't any university teach economics other than Keynesian? We need to privatize everything. Everything the government oversees turns to ruin.

Re #10, remember the term "capitalism" was created by Marxists as a pejorative. For far too many, it is still a dirty word. We want to use the term "Free market economics" rather than using our enemy's term 'capitalism'. People are actually generally quite supportive of free markets.

It’s about time the American education system returned to teaching actual history instead of anti-American propaganda, leftist indoctrination and flat out godlessness. It should be mandatory in every state, and history books aren’t the only ones in need of reform.

#2, alas, by the time I was in high school in the '70s, the name of the course had been changed to "Problems of American Democracy" or PAD. My teacher was a far-left lib. On day one he asked for a show of hands for who in the room considered themselves a Republican. I was the only one who raised a hand and my life was hell for the rest of the year. Most of what he taught in the class was economics, with a left slant.

And just to reinforce the point that communism is horrific, at the end of the year, the teacher should tell the students, "We're going to use communism to determine everyone's grades. So if you made above an 85, you'll 'share' your grade with those who failed and your grade will be rounded down to 75. If you failed, don't worry. Those who passed will 'share' their grades with you, and we'll round your grades up to 75 as well."

A federal magistrate judge on Monday criticized federal prosecutors when ordering that they turn over grand jury evidence to the defense team representing indicted former FBI Director James Comey, who faces charges of perjury and obstruction of a congressional investigation. Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick said interim U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan made two statements to grand jurors that could be “fundamental misstatements of the law,” The Hill reported. “The Court recognizes that the relief sought by the defense is rarely granted,” Fitzpatrick said in the opinion. “However, the record points to a disturbing pattern of profound investigative missteps, missteps that led an FBI agent and a prosecutor to

The Supreme Court agreed to review an effort by the Trump administration to limit asylum processing claims from immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border in an order issued Thursday. The key issue in the case, Noem v. Al Otro Lado, is over what constitutes "arrival in the United States" within the meaning of federal immigration law. The law provides that an alien who "arrives" may apply for asylum and must be inspected by an immigration officer. The legal question, however, is over whether an immigrant "arrives" to begin the process for the asylum claim when meeting immigration officers on the U.S. side of the border or while still on

The late William F. Buckley, Jr. must be credited as one of the people who established modern conservatism in the United States. He had a weather eye for what or who could help or hurt the movement. In the early 1960s, Robert Welch, founder of the John Birch Society, labeled former president Dwight Eisenhower, former secretary of state George C. Marshall, and many other leading Republicans as communists. He, and the Birch Society, claimed that every federal agency had been taken over by the communists. After many debates and much correspondence with Welch, Buckley led a movement to expel Welch and the John Birch Society from the conservative movement

In a memo to staff on October 30, Avelo Airlines’ head of flight operations Scott Hall painted a rosy, if defensive, picture of the company’s future. Avelo’s financial strategy was working, he said. The company had a big contract from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to do charter deportation flights, and despite some bumps, the future was bright. They had just hired more pilots and couldn’t buy aircraft fast enough to keep pace with demand. Sure, shutting down their entire West Coast operation looked bad, but it was good, actually, a long-planned move toward efficiency that had nothing to do with the “outrage mob” boycotting Avelo for its association with ICE.

Immigrants detained in facilities across the U.S. would be able to contact their lawyers and families under legislation filed by a group of congressional Democrats. The Restoring Access to Detainees Act affects immigrants who are placed in Customs and Border Protection or Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities. Sponsors of the legislation said it follows months of “credible reporting” that ICE and CBP have prevented detainees from contacting family members or legal representatives. “The Trump administration’s practice of snatching people off the street and denying them access to lawyers or calls to family is cruel, unnecessary, and puts U.S. citizens and lawfully present immigrants at risk of wrongful detention and deportation,”

The former First Lady wants you to believe that America rejected the idea of a woman leading the free world because we’re too primitive, too sexist, too stuck in the Stone Age to recognize brilliance when it smiles into a camera. Wrong. We rejected Kamala Harris — because she is, without exaggeration, the emptiest pantsuit ever shuffled onto a debate stage. She didn’t lose because she’s a woman. America’s crime map is not random. And it is not evenly distributed. It forms a pattern, a persistent outline that says more about the country than any campaign speech or census brochure ever could. When you trace the safest states in America, you trace a corridor of calm: New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont’s shadow, Idaho’s long sweep of farms and foothills. Places where the pace is steady and the population overwhelmingly white. When you trace the most dangerous states, the pattern changes just as sharply — a concentration of chaos in states marked by sprawling cities, fractured communities, and the kind of “diverse” demographic makeup polite society insists you never mention.
