On Sunday, Yemenis, commonly referred to as Houthis, attacked a ship called the Magic Seas, a Greek-owned vessel, in the Red Sea. The pirates attacked and captured the Magic Seas:
It is thought the Yemen-based terror group initially attacked using a swarm of boats, small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. They then used kamikaze drones.
Having seized control of the bulk carrier, the gunmen simultaneously detonated multiple charges around the ship’s hull, causing it to sink. The crew abandoned ship after being accosted by the pirates and, I believe, were rescued.
The Yemenis released shocking, and highly sophisticated, drone-shot video of their attack. The sinking of the Magic Seas is stunning: (X)

Shipping companies need to arm all vessels with shoot to kill orders on small boats approaching the vessel...take them out before they can board the ship...let em' float for shark food...

We should go back into the Red Sea and kill a few pirates. Then when all the dirt bound houthis get together to wave their guns and rant against us, drop a couple cluster bombs on 'em. Then go back and whack some pirates and wait for the gun wavers again.

The Houthis are supplied and supported by Iran. Tell Iran that for every ship the Houthis sink, three of theirs will be sunk. Failing to do that we could go back to the escorted convey strategy of WWII. Egypt and Europe are the missing links here. It is typically their ships and cargo that are attacked while Egypt misses out on canal fees.

Establish a cordon sanitaire around Yemen by eliminating all means of commercial intercourse by sea or air. The Yemeni government, such as it is, bears responsibility for the terrorist piracy of its Dark Age tribes.

A number of the crew were murdered on site. Many others believed taken hostage. Majority of crew were Philipino. No Americans apparently on board.

That was a Houthi recruiting video made aboard a tired old ship handed over to them for their use as a movie prop. I was particularly thrilled with the camera angle looking down the walkway as the "Houthi SEALs" advanced in their "tiger crouch," guns at the ready. But wait a second, had one of them already advanced ahead of them with a camera? Was it already safe enough for him to turn around and film his colleagues playing "Hollywood" Charlie Sheen in "Navy SEALs?" Then there was the sinking... oh yeah, that was great. Nothing speaks better of your skills as a "Sea Pirate" than to sink the only thing worth a crap in that area of the world. Why use up those explosives you might soon wish you had anyway?
Losers.

IIRC this ship was Greek owned. Greece has 13 frigates, 15 missile boats and 10 gunboats. Sending one frigate, one gunboat and a missile boat into the Red Sea to sink every Yemeni vessel it runs across, and I mean every fishing boat, whatever, that floats and launches from the Yemeni coast. Go into harbors and sink ALL of the vessels. Make sure that Yemenis understand that ALL of them are going to be held responsible for this. And when there are NO boats that float in Yemen, perhaps this will slow down, maybe it won't be as fun for these pirates any more.

What I find most of army is that the most sophisticated and powerful armed forces on the planet cannot control seventh century barbarians with rocket propelled grenades! The fact that these murdering barbarians are still alive, wreaking havoc is beyond the pale.

All Pirates have historically enjoyed one special punishment. I hope it is still in vogue. Why not allow these ships to arm themselves with fifty caliber machine guns? The Pirates wouldn't get within a quarter mile.

Re #15, excellent idea, but you underestimate the effective range of the .50 cal machine gun by at least six times. 1.5 mile hits over water, splashes to allow fire correction would be easily done. NOTHING in those small and medium sized vessels will stop a .50 cal armor piercing round, including the engine.
Four .50s, stern port, stern starboard, bow port, bow starboard with crew and a small, standard small arms 'splash armor' for each would do it. Would require four skilled gunners, four assistant gunners who could be trained up in half a hour.
Even Barret .50 cal semiauto rifles, same four locations could be effective with good gunners.

All the countries who rely on shipping in the Red Sea should contribute naval vessels to patrol the waters.
Any and all pirates are targets.
