In politics and government, “clever” is not always synonymous with “good.” But when it comes to the matter of the Trump administration’s handling of military bases that had been renamed during the Biden era, the policy is both clever and satisfactory.
Back in the summer of 2023, on the recommendation of a congressionally mandated commission, the Biden Department of Defense renamed nine major military bases that had originally been named for Confederate military leaders: Fort Benning, Ga.; Fort Bragg, N.C.; Fort Gordon, Ga.; Fort A.P. Hill, Va.; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Lee, Va.; Fort Pickett, Va.; Fort Polk, La.; and Fort Rucker, Ala.

A further attempt to re-write history according to the agenda of the many pukes in the Demented Fuhrer's White House. They tried go to battleships until they were stopped by their insanity.

I called the re-named Fort Bragg "Fort Liberty-Biberty" after the insurance commercials. When serving at Fort Bragg in the 1970s, I thought that naming the place after the Confederate general was also an embarrassment - even if he was a Tar Heel.
However, I liked Fort Cavazos for Fort Hood. Gen. Cavazos is a worthy person to be so honored, but the new nickname for the post - "Fort Cav" - could not be more perfect. Can we keep it?

I'd like to see one named for General Longstreet. He was a Confederate general but after the yankees won he became a Republican and was held in low regard by Southerners. My favorite is Confederate General John Bell Gordon. A county in GA is named for him and I-75 has a rest stop in it. And my kidneys are calibrated to make use of it.

dGreat. Zhou had to mark every fire hydrant while he was the unjpresident. Tjat's over. Thank God.
That said, the NR continues to be terminally boring. Is that little weasel Rich Lowry still running it?

The bases should save the signs for the next Democrat president.

Named for Confederate generals to help unity. My only caveat is Bragg. Not one of the South's best. General Johnston said ""I know Mr. Davis thinks he can do a great many things other men would hesitate to attempt. For instance, he tried to do what God failed to do. He tried to make a soldier of Braxton Bragg, and you know the result."
Johnston and Davis reportedly had a fight at West Point over a girl. Johnston apparently won and Davis carried a grudge during the war to the detriment of the South's effectiveness.

I dont like it. Its just more phoney baloney political silliness. If the place was named after a Confederate, it should still be named after the same Confederate. Switching it to the janitor with the same name is just a stunt, more worthy of a junior high kid than a world leader.

Thank goodness for common sense! I was stationed at Fort Benning, Fort Rucker and Fort Hood during my time in the Army. I never acknowledged the new names by the Woke crowd. During the Vietnam War it was a sight to see all the Hueys lined up in trail formation landing at Lowe Field (Ft Rucker) at the end of a training day.

Are you, perchance, referring to Dr. Mary Walker and her Medal of Honor?

As I posted some years ago when this subject was on the news, but don't think many readers like it then and won't like it now. Suppose we sent all the blacks in the US back to Africa; can we then say slavery never existed in this country. People, the past is past and should be left alone so that future generations learn from the mistakes made during that time.

The past is past history and should remain that so that future generations know what happened, whether good or bad, so that the same mistakes are not repeated in the future.

Strictly on the merits, a fort should have been named after Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, the most skilled General of the Confederacy. During Forrest's command, he committed not one strategic or tactical mistake on the battlefield. Sadly, his legacy was destroyed by the stain of his early affiliation with the post-war, Ku Klux Klan.

Ah, #13, I stand corrected. Not only did I not know that Ft A P Hill had been re-named, I didn't even know it had survived BRAC - I thought it was closed.
