New Zealand’s navy has suffered its first peacetime ship loss since World War II when the $100 million multi-role support vessel HMNZS Manawanui ran aground off the southern coast of Upolu Island, Samoa, caught fire and eventually sank—triggering an environmental disaster in the process.
With all 75 passengers and crew evacuated, the vessel’s loss brings fresh scrutiny to the leadership under its openly lesbian commanding officer, Commander Yvonne Gray.
The Manawanui, originally built in Norway and repurposed for New Zealand’s Royal Navy with a substantial $103 million investment, was conducting a seabed survey mission when it hit a reef, according to maritime news outlet gCaptain.

You'd think that submerged reefs would be one of the important features to survey on the seabed. But, DEI and equity are far more important than mission success. Just buy another ship from Norway.

Well, the crew WAS serving under her at the time. Like using one's cell phone while driving. Distraction is terribly dangerous.

Perhaps they should choose officers by competence rather than DEI?
Incredibly incompetent.

This is what happens when you have a person in critically important positions based solely on their social/ political/sexual/anything but normal status, rather than the ability to do the job at hand. A better example would be Kamala Harris. Air from ear to ear.

Perhaps "reef" means something else in that captain's world- maybe "getting reefed" is psychologically desirable. Perhaps it was an irresistible impulse. Perhaps she has a Chinese girlfriend.

This is exactly what you get when you hire someone for her sex and her sexuality. Merit? What's that?

It is hard to attract competent people to join any kind of organization that is lead by incompetent and corrupt people. Guessing all the competent people left the NZ navy long ago. They probably were not welcome to begin with. People do not go where they are not welcome.

And so we discover that being a lesbian somehow isn't a qualification for leadership. Who knew? And here I always thought DEI made us stronger while merit, skill, talent, education, training, experience, and natural ability were weaknesses.

Besides the DIE angle, why put someone with obvious psychological problems, i.e., confused sexuality, in charge of anything really important?

So, what the hell being a lesbian has to do with losing a boat? Who cares if she was a lesbian? I am as straight as they come, but it seems the writer has a hangup about others sexual preferences and is pushing his personal agenda here. To make myself clear, I have not read the article, but the title says it all.

Imagine being an officer in the NZ Navy going up the ranks to one day get a command & this Brit comes along & takes it. But now no one else will be captaining that ship.
Now will she be demoted or promoted?

In the American Navy, she would be replaced, possibly court martialed, and her career ended.
I suspect the New Zealand Navy will protect her and pin the blame on some junior officer who was on duty that night.
