SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois Supreme Court on Friday upheld a lower court ruling that tossed out a law barring political parties from choosing candidates for the General Assembly when they had no one run in a primary. The court’s decision was not based on the merits of the case: Two justices recused themselves from deliberations, and the court was unable to get four votes needed to render a valid opinion. Comments:

Long story short, Dems were trying to keep Republicans off Nov. ballot. They were thwarted - for now.

The 2024 hurricane season is not going as predicted – yet. So far this year, including the three that are spinning Monday, there have been more storms in the Pacific than the Atlantic, and that's a bit of a surprise, forecasters say. In addition, it's been eerily calm in the Atlantic over the past week or so as we approach what's traditionally the busiest time of the season. "It is quiet out there," Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach told USA TODAY on Monday. "I certainly wasn't expecting this when we put out our most recent seasonal forecast!" Vehicles have been set ablaze after a violent fire broke out at a car manufacturing plant on August 24. Illinois fire crews were called to Rivian’s Normal plant for a reported vehicle fire Saturday night. A spokesperson for the fire department said there is an unspecified number of vehicles damaged by the incident. This is the second fire in four days to erupt on the Rivian plant. Witnesses outside the plant said they reportedly saw the fire as early as 9:50 pm. Normal Fire Department spokesperson Matt Swaney said the blaze was extinguished by midnight, but crews remained on the

In what may be a surprise blow to Democrats' chances of holding a key red state seat in the U.S. House, Alaska Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom announced Friday she is suspending her campaign for Congress. Dahlstrom was in what was essentially a three-way race with incumbent Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola and Republican Nick Begich III, who comes from a prominent political family in The Last Frontier. (Snip) Though the two GOP candidates garnered more votes than Peltola, she was named the winner after the hierarchical rounds of ranked choice vote tallying concluded. A California baseball stadium featured in the Hollywood blockbuster “A League of Their Own” was destroyed by a fire late Thursday, officials said. The Jay Littleton Ballpark, in Ontario, California, went up in flames about 11:30 p.m. and is a “a total loss,” city spokesperson Dan Bell said. The cause of the fire is not known, but investigators are on scene, he said Friday, adding that the stadium’s grandstand was wooden and likely burned very quickly. Losing the ballpark, which was designated a historic landmark in the city in 2003 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in

US job growth during much of the past year was significantly weaker than initially estimated, according to new data released Wednesday. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ preliminary annual benchmark review of employment data suggests that there were 818,000 fewer jobs in March of this year than were initially reported. Every year, the BLS conducts a revision to the data from its monthly survey of businesses’ payrolls, then benchmarks the March employment level to those measured by the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages program. The preliminary data marks the largest downward revision since 2009 and shows that the labor market

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Sunday people are “reading too much” into the specifics of the price-gouging plan from the Harris-Walz campaign amid backlash from pundits and Vice President Harris’s political opponents. “Well, I think people are reading too much into what has been put out there. We know that Kamala Harris is going to be focused on building up more affordable housing. We know that Kamala Harris has already delivered on making sure that health care is more accessible and affordable for Americans and will protect ObamaCare,” Whitmer, a co-chair of the Democrats’ campaign, said about criticism of the

A financial analyst I follow on Twitter/X, Robert Sterling, says everyone should calm down about Kamala’s grocery price controls idea. It’s actually worse than you think. Here’s his expectation from his Twitter column: People need to stop overreacting about Kamala’s plan to reduce food inflation, as if it would lead to communism, mass starvation, and the end of America. I worked in M&A in the food industry. Here’s a step-by-step summary of what would actually happen: 1. The government announces that grocery retailers aren’t allowed to raise prices. 2. Grocery stores, which operate on 1-2% net margins, can’t survive if

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis could see a big tax hike as part of Democratic Mayor Jacob Frey's nearly $1.9 billion budget proposal. Frey unveiled the budget on Wednesday which includes two bumps to the tax levy: 8.1% in 2025 and another 9.8% in 2026. (Snip) Frey said tough decisions had to be made to get down to an 8% increase. Public works employees recently signed a new contract boosting their pay by nearly 30%, and the police department has a new deal increasing pay by about 20%. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has run out of disaster relief funding for the second year in a row before the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season has even arrived. The agency, which is funded by Congress, uses the disaster relief fund to aid state and local governments in preparing and recovering from natural disasters including earthquakes, tornadoes, wildfires and hurricanes. The DRF also provides financial assistance for the Individuals and Households Program which helps eligible disaster survivors with funding for temporary housing and other disaster-related expenses. In an explosive letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. As Joe Biden disembarked Air Force One in the early hours of Tuesday morning in California last week, he was visibly shaking. It was approaching 5.30am East Coast time and the president had been awake almost 24 hours. Walking slowly down the plane's stairs, he struggled to step up into the SUV waiting to take him to the 8,000-acre Santa Barbara ranch where he and his family have just enjoyed a week-long vacation. One of his Secret Service agents moved to shield him from the watching cameras, before giving him a helpful boost into the car. On the tarmac, First Lady Jill Biden watched, visibly concerned.

Less than two months ago, Donald Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt after 20-year-old Thomas Crooks opened fire at an open-air rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. While Secret Service agents were applauded for bravely swarming the stage to protect Trump, the incident represented one of the worst security failures in American history. Following the shooting on July 13 - which claimed the life of firefighter Corey Comperatore - Congress set up a bipartisan taskforce to investigate. As questions mounted, Secret Service chief Kimberly Cheatle was forced to resign.
