not nearly as surprising as it should be

The assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump left a nation stunned. But the most shocking aspect was that it was not nearly as surprising as it should have been. For months, politicians, the press and pundits have escalated reckless rhetoric in this campaign on both sides. That includes claims that Trump was set to kill democracy, unleash “death squads” and make homosexuals and reporters “disappear.”
President Biden has stoked this rage rhetoric. In 2022, Biden held his controversial speech before Independence Hall where he denounced Trump supporters as enemies of the people. Biden recently referenced the speech and has embraced the claims that this could be our last democratic election.

Today's rage is fed by the algorithm. It's the foundation of social media investment.

We were not the least bit surprised by the attempt on Trump’s life. We pray nightly, without fail, for a hedge of protection for him. But this rhetoric by the vile democrats, calling him an existential threat that needs to be removed was the perfect trigger for someone who wanted to be a hero. That would be, The View, Joe, Nancy, Maxine, MSNBC, CNN, Chuck, etc. Biden has called for the need to remove Trump relentlessly. This was bound to happen. This shooter probably thought he was shooting another Hitler and saving the country. Where ever did he get that idea? There’s your answer.

Common sense will tell you that there is a small percentage of people out there are “nut jobs” who when stoked can be very dangerous. If you have been paying attention you should know that the leftist and progressive Democrats have recently been stoking those “nut jobs” to take kinetic action against Trump. To those “nut jobs” Biden going on National TV the other morning claiming “that it is time to put Trump in the bullseye” was no doubt taken as a “signal” to those “nut jobs” that it was time to take Trump out once and for all.

I watch enough police TV to know an assassin needs means, motive and opportunity. I could identify all 3.

He brings up rhetoric from the early 1800s. Obviously back then the message wasn't piped into peoples' homes 24/7/365. Some oddball on a street corner ringing a bell would yell out the message. Most people were too busy trying to keep a roof over their heads to plan an attack. Today we have tons of underemployed/unemployed with time on their hands and crazy ideas that are given tacit approval.

"on both sides"? Hardly. Don't be so fast to equivocate the ferocity of the left with the sincere concerns of citizens of this nation.

As pointed out in the article, the media is firmly supporting the Left and doesn't criticize them. Meanwhile, they MAKE UP stuff about Trump and the right and demonize to the extreme. Wouldn't it be OK to shoot Hitler is the implied message. Biden might be an incompetent dolt but you wouldn't shoot a senile person.
It is the combination of the radical Left and their media propagandists that has raised the temperature so high. AND the Left has always run high on pure emotion. Gas on a fire!

"Biden recently referenced the speech and has embraced the claims that this could be our last democratic election. "
Seriously?!
Why do people insist on living in a world that no longer exists?
2020 saw unconstitutional election law changes.
Wide spread ballot harvesting.
Multiple ballot runs through the machines.
It's hard to say when America saw it's last democratic election,
but, this election, will definitely not be it.

When the left and media demonize someone 24/7 for at least 8 years and more do not be surprised when violence happens. Republicans are the receivers of violence from the left as Rand Paul did, Steve Scalise, and violent armed protestors were arrested outside the home of supreme court justice Kavanaugh.

I don't agree with Mr. Turley that the rhetoric has come from both sides. Mostly conservatives are going about their business, trying to keep food on the table and their job from going away.

Baier from Fox was talking about a few points the vegetable made, then came after Trump supporters that they should tone down their rhetoric. Rather strange, isn't it? President Trump never ever made a statement like the senile morally corrupt dirt bag that is the present resident in the WH when he is not on or in the toilette.

FTA:
"Some of us have been saying for years that this rage rhetoric is a dangerous political pitch for the nation. While most people reject the hyperbolic claims, others take them as true. They believe that homosexuals are going to be “disappeared” as claimed on ABC’s “The View” or that the Trump “death squads” are now green lighted by a conservative Supreme Court, as claimed by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow."
These are truly evil, deranged people. Totally out of their minds, and they are so crazed that they probably imagine that these things they say are real....even when there isn't the SLIGHTEST evidence of any of that in the first four years under President Trump.
People need to be arrested for saying they want any political figure killed.

Disagree. The Loony Left and the witless media has been calling for out deaths and the death of Donald Trump since 2016. Their most recent ranting calls for the death of Israel. I'm not surprised at all that some nut case finally came through with an attempt.
