Supporters of the climate-activism organization Just Stop Oil sprayed paint on World Heritage Site Stonehenge and were arrested on Wednesday, just before thousands are expected to visit the historic structures for the summer solstice. “Today’s action has come days after the Labour party’s manifesto has recommitted them to stopping all future licences for new oil and gas, should they form the next government,” reads a statement by Just Stop Oil. The United Kingdom will hold a general election on July 4, 2024. Niamh Lynch, a 21-year-old undergraduate student at Oxford University, and Rajan Naidu, 73, began spraying orange powder paint on Stonehenge around noon,

Latinos trust former President Donald Trump more than President Joe Biden on immigration, according to an Equis poll, released Thursday. The poll showed that of 1,592 Latino registered voters in seven battleground states surveyed, 41 percent said they trust Trump on immigration, compared to only 38 percent who trust Biden. The poll was conducted April 20-May 5, 2024, in English and Spanish, with a margin of error of ± 2.5 percentage points. Carlos Odio, co-founder and senior vice president for research at Equis Labs, said Democrats no longer hold the advantage they once did with Latinos on immigration, according to Axios.

New York governor Kathy Hochul’s job-approval and favorability ratings dropped to a new low in a Thursday poll, as pluralities of voters say she either doesn’t care for their interests or fails to provide decisive leadership. Hochul’s approval rating stands at a record low of 44 percent, according to a statewide Siena College poll conducted last week, with 50 percent disapproving of her job performance since she assumed office in 2021 following the resignation of then-governor Andrew Cuomo. She is also seen unfavorably by 49 percent of respondents, compared with 38 percent who view her in a positive light. Despite Hochul’s poor polling numbers, New York voters support her

It seems hard to believe, but we're just around the corner from the first presidential debate of the 2024 cycle, a week from today (June 27th). As my colleague Bob Hoge wrote earlier on Thursday, both the Biden and the Trump campaigns are preparing their candidates for showtime on the big stage in Atlanta. In recent days, CNN, which is hosting the debate, released the official rules both sides agreed to abide by. Whether President Joe Biden will manage to do that is still an open question, of course. In a new snapshot of the state of the race, polling from Emerson College and The Hill suggests

Well, it sure looks like California is beyond saving now. In a stunning anti-democratic move, the California Supreme Court ruled on Thursday to block an anti-tax initiative from appearing on the ballot. This initiative, known as the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act, was backed by the business community and sought to make it more difficult to increase taxes in California. Among other things, it would have required the legislature to obtain voter approval for any new or increased state taxes. There's nothing groundbreaking about it, as voters in other states have used the ballot box to approve or deny tax initiatives before. But Gavin Newsom

Every once in a while, history gives us a second chance. The multitude of errors and missed signals that led up to the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon taught us valuable lessons about the nature of the world we live in and how truly vulnerable we are in the United States to bad actors looking for blood. One of the most valuable lessons we learned from that terrible day is that complacency is a deadly disease that can result in tragedy too painful to bear. Washington — The Supreme Court on Thursday left intact an obscure tax enacted as part of Republicans' sweeping 2017 reform package that targets U.S. taxpayers with shares of certain foreign corporations. The court ruled 7-2 that the so-called mandatory repatriation tax is constitutional under Article I and the 16th Amendment. Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote the majority opinion. "[T]he precise and narrow question that the Court addresses today is whether Congress may attribute an entity's realized and undistributed income to the entity's shareholders or partners, and then tax the shareholders or partners on their portions of that income," Kavanaugh wrote. "This Court's longstanding precedents,

President Joe Biden is being shuffled to Camp Debate to prepare for the most consequential debate of his political career: the June 27 debate with former President Donald Trump. Biden is mustering all his top advisers to prepare him for this epic showdown, where the president’s mental health and stamina will be tested. And what will that be—Biden not falling or him saying something remotely coherent? The 2024 playbook is a mess, and it's Democrats who are making that known behind the scenes.

I think it's safe to say we're there. Where is "there"? In this case, veteran Democrat activist-operative James Carville is openly calling for the creation of a White House-led "enforcement mechanism" to compel the lapdog media to directly help embattled Joe Biden beat Donald Trump in November. We first go back to May, when New York Times editor Joe Kahn said the duty of his paper is to cover news that Americans care about rather than what helps Biden or hurts Trump, while Biden aides were reportedly urging officials to criticize the NYT’s coverage that didn't help Biden or hurt Trump. The Biden aides' plan wasn't good enough for Carville.
